Clerk loses RM126k to insurance scam
The 56-year-old victim from Kuantan only realised after six months that he had fallen victim to an insurance scam.
Acting Kuantan police chief, Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, said the incident began in November last year when the man received a phone call from an individual claiming to represent an insurance agency.
"The caller alleged that the victim's name had been misused to file fraudulent insurance claims. The call was then transferred to two other individuals posing as a police officer and a prosecuting officer.
"The victim was informed that he had to pay RM68,000 in bail to settle the case. He made three separate transactions through a cash deposit machine into three different bank accounts," he said in a statement today.
Adli said the victim transferred a total of RM126,500 from his savings between Dec 5 last year and June 1 this year.
He said that the victim realised he had been scammed when he was no longer able to contact the individuals involved and lodged a police report yesterday.
Adli advised the public not to panic or share personal information when receiving calls from unknown individuals. The public are advised to verify account numbers at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before making any transactions.

PETALING JAYA: The family of Teoh Beng Hock says they do not accept the apology from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding his death. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan said the family viewed the apology as insincere because no action has been taken against the officers involved. "The family feels slighted over the insincerity of the apology by the MACC. They said that they are apologising because they see our pain but they are not surrendering the five officers that we believed were involved. This apology is not sincere because there was no further action taken on them. Earlier, chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said MACC apologised to Beng Hock's family for the ordeal that they went through. "I wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years. "The MACC also acknowledges that, on May 12, 2015, the government paid RM600,000 in compensation to the family along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956. "Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, the MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child," he said. He added that reforms were being conducted even though insufficient evidence to charge any suspects was found in lieu of the most recent investigation into the death. Teoh Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009, at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor MACC office.

Police bust major heroin syndicate in northern Malaysia, RM4.13m drugs seized
SHAH ALAM: Police have dismantled a heroin base drug distribution network operating in northern Malaysia after arresting three men in coordinated raids across the Klang Valley and Penang. The operation, led by Bukit Aman's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), uncovered 47.526 kg of heroin base and 920 grams of heroin worth RM4.13 million. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the arrests on July 12, following raids in Subang Jaya, Seri Kembangan, and Permatang Pauh. The first suspect was detained in USJ 19/4, Subang Jaya, where officers found 14.52 kg of heroin base and 920 grams of heroin hidden in a car compartment. A second raid in Seri Kembangan led to the seizure of 22.55 kg of heroin base, while a third operation in Permatang Pauh uncovered 7.456 kg of the drug. The Penang suspect is believed to be the syndicate's mastermind, sourcing heroin from a neighbouring country before distributing it via two transporters, who earned RM4,000 per trip. Hussein described heroin base as the 'mother of drugs,' explaining its role as a raw material processed into higher-grade narcotics. NGO: Azam's apology to Teoh family shows compassion
KUALA LUMPUR: The apology tendered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock showed compassion on part of the graft-busters, a non-governmental organisation leader said today. Rapera Movement founder Datuk Seri Dr Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos said the apology was an exemplary move by Azam. "The apology tendered by Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock and the additional compensation is a good initiative and compassionate move by the MACC. "Though he doesn't have to do so legally, such a compassionate initiative ought to be followed by other government agencies where relevant," he said in a statement today. Earlier, MACC announced that the commission was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock to support the welfare and educational needs of his child. This follows findings from investigations into Teoh's death, which had spanned the past 16 years. Azam acknowledged the outcomes of previous probes, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry in 2011, the Court of Appeal's ruling in 2014, and the most recent police investigation, which had been classified as "No Further Action" (NFA) by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The commission also acknowledged that, on May 12, 2015, the government had paid RM600,000 in compensation to Teoh's family, along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956.
