Thai-Cambodian border clashes fail to deter visitors to Sungai Golok town
RANTAU PANJANG: Malaysians, particularly those from Kelantan, continue to cross into southern Thailand in droves despite the recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border. Checks at the Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok border checkpoints found a steady stream of Malaysians heading into Sungai Golok town and nearby southern provinces as early as 8am. The weekend crowd showed little sign of concern over the recent conflict in the northeastern region of Thailand, which shares a border with Cambodia. Housewife Suriani Mokhtar said the number of Malaysian visitors had not decreased, with some even being unaware of the recent developments at Thailand's border with Cambodia. "The border clash is far from here, so Malaysians and visitors are not too worried. Businesses in Thailand's southern provinces are operating as usual," said the 35-year-old who is from Kota Baru. A trader, who only wanted to be known as Adli, said he and his friends were heading to Narathiwat to meet their Thai friends. "We plan to perform our Friday prayers at a mosque in Narathiwiat before meeting our friends at a popular restaurant there about 2pm (Malaysia time)," said the 23-year-old who is from Rantau Panjang. For many Malaysians, Sungai Golok town remains a popular destination for leisure, shopping, and affordable spa treatments, especially during weekends and public holidays. Authorities on both sides of the border were seen monitoring the situation closely, although no restrictions were imposed on travel. It was reported today that Malaysia had called on Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions following a border clash between the two nations. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that as Asean chair, Malaysia was following with deep concern the clashes between Thai and Cambodian military forces at their disputed border yesterday, which had resulted in casualties. He added that Malaysia wished to underscore the importance of resolving the border dispute through dialogue and diplomacy, in the spirit of Asean solidarity and good neighbourliness.

Ex-IT officer loses RM180,000 in FB job scam
KUANTAN: A former information technology officer lost her savings and gratuity totalling RM180,789 after falling victim to a non-existent part-time job scam advertised on Facebook earlier this month. The 42-year-old woman was deceived into believing that she needed to invest a certain amount as capital to participate in the online job scheme but ended up losing all her money. Acting district police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the victim was told she only needed to work online from home and could earn lucrative returns. "The woman was enticed by promises of large payouts for simply completing online tasks. "She was instructed to log in and click on a system, and each time she completed a task, payments were supposedly credited to her account. "However, she was asked to make an initial payment to qualify for job assignments, and failure to do so would disqualify her from the position," he said in a statement today. The victim made 18 transactions totalling RM180,789 into 16 different bank accounts between July 6 and July 16, he said. Adli said the woman realised she had been scammed when the fraudsters continued pressuring her for more payments, despite her having completed several tasks and receiving no income. He said the victim lodged a police report today and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping, and a fine.

Clerk loses RM126k to insurance scam
KUANTAN: A clerk attempting to post a RM68,000 bail after his identity was allegedly linked to a fake insurance claim ended up losing RM126,500 of his savings to fraudsters. The 56-year-old victim from Kuantan only realised after six months that he had fallen victim to an insurance scam. Acting Kuantan police chief, Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, said the incident began in November last year when the man received a phone call from an individual claiming to represent an insurance agency. "The caller alleged that the victim's name had been misused to file fraudulent insurance claims. The call was then transferred to two other individuals posing as a police officer and a prosecuting officer. "The victim was informed that he had to pay RM68,000 in bail to settle the case. He made three separate transactions through a cash deposit machine into three different bank accounts," he said in a statement today. Adli said the victim transferred a total of RM126,500 from his savings between Dec 5 last year and June 1 this year. He said that the victim realised he had been scammed when he was no longer able to contact the individuals involved and lodged a police report yesterday. Adli advised the public not to panic or share personal information when receiving calls from unknown individuals. The public are advised to verify account numbers at before making any transactions.

Kuantan cops put the brakes on 65 mat rempit, issue 194 summonses
KUANTAN: A teenager performing a 'wheelie' on his motorcycle was among 65 individuals detained during the "Op Khas Samseng Jalanan" operation conducted at various locations in the state capital yesterday. The 18-year-old suspect was performing the dangerous stunt near the Pantai Sepat Muslim burial ground when he was stopped by a team of policemen. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said a total of 194 summonses were issued, and 24 motorcycles were seized for various offences during the operation, held between 4pm and 11pm. "All the suspects were aged between 15 and 25. Besides participating in illegal racing, they were found to be riding without valid licences, using illegally modified motorcycles, displaying incorrect registration plates, and equipping their bikes with modified exhaust pipes. "The special operation was conducted following complaints from residents that illegal street racing activities were organised near their housing settlements," he said in a statement today. Adli said the 18-year-old suspect who performed the wheelie was detained for executing the stunt along a busy road, an act that endangered not only himself but also other road users. He said the teenager is being investigated for reckless driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail sentence of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000. Meanwhile, Adli added that police will continue to carry out regular special operations to address the "mat rempit" issue and curb illegal street racing in the area. "We have identified several hotspots frequently used for illegal racing activities, including the stretch between Kampung Sungai Soi and Tanjung Lumpur here," he said.

Dead tapir a 'regular visitor' to Cherating Mardi agro park
KUANTAN: The male tapir that was killed in a collision with a vehicle on Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman here was a "mascot" for campers as it was frequently spotted at the Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park near here. Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 12.10am on Sunday (July 13) when the animal was struck by a car while attempting to cross the road. "The driver, a 41-year-old man, was unhurt," he said in a statement on Sunday. Police were dispatched to the scene to ensure traffic safety on the poorly lit stretch of road. Adli added that the tapir's carcass was handed over to the Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action. Badrol Hisham Mohamad, 44, who was among the first at the scene, said he immediately alerted the police and Perhilitan. "Several motorists also stopped to help direct traffic as the carcass was lying in the middle of the road and posed a danger to others," said the Kampung Sungai Ular resident. The Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park, in a Facebook post, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the tapir's death as a major blow to wildlife lovers. "One of the park's most beloved attractions is now gone. This protected tapir, a regular sight among campers and nature enthusiasts, had brought joy to many," the post read. – Bernama
