Ludhiana West assembly bypoll: Setback for Congress, internal strife fuels Ashu's defeat

Hindustan Times24-06-2025
Factionalism within the Congress seems to have played a big role in the defeat of Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana West assembly byelection. Despite an aggressive campaign, Ashu secured only 24,542 votes — a 27.22% share — down from 28.06% in the 2022 assembly elections, where he had garnered around 32,000 votes. This marks a noticeable erosion of the party's support in the region. (HT File)
Despite an aggressive campaign, Ashu secured only 24,542 votes — a 27.22% share — down from 28.06% in the 2022 assembly elections, where he had garnered around 32,000 votes. This marks a noticeable erosion of the party's support in the region.
The absence of key party leaders, including Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, from the campaign trail further compounded Ashu's loss. Both leaders were noticeably absent from crucial events, with Warring's exclusion being particularly significant. This internal division within the party appears to have severely hampered Ashu's chances of victory.
While former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, along with senior leaders Rana Gurjeet Singh and Pargat Singh, took charge of the campaign, the exclusion of Warring and Bajwa left the party fractured. Their absence from key campaigning activities, including Ashu's roadshow, highlighted the ongoing rift within the state leadership and weakened the party's position in a highly competitive by-poll.
Blow to Channi camp
The loss is seen as a blow to the faction led by Channi, who had hoped a victory would help regain momentum and challenge Warring's leadership as the state Congress chief. Despite his efforts, Congress could not close the gap with AAP, which emerged victorious by a larger margin than in the 2022 elections.
Implications for party leadership
In the aftermath of the defeat, Ashu took moral responsibility and resigned from his post as Working President of PPCC. However, rival factions within Congress argue that the blame cannot be placed solely on Ashu's shoulders. They point out that the exclusion of senior leaders, particularly from the Hindu and Dalit communities, contributed to the party's failure to connect with its core voter base.
'There's no denying the deep divisions within the party. What's concerning is that the BJP is making inroads into our traditional Hindu vote bank,' said a senior Congress leader from the Hindu community.
'The overrepresentation of Jat Sikh leaders has created resentment, and this is benefiting the BJP. We need a Hindu face as the state Congress president to restore faith among our core supporters.'
Rift likely to deepen
The rift within the Congress is expected to widen in the coming days, with Raja Warring's faction preparing to escalate the issue of their exclusion from the campaign. People familiar with the matter said that Warring has already flagged this matter with the party high command.
Meanwhile, the Channi-led faction is likely to push for greater influence within the PPCC and key positions ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
AAP misused official machinery: Warring
Reacting to the bypoll result, state Congress chief Raja Warring said there was nothing special about the ruling AAP winning the Ludhiana West byelection as it has used all the official machinery for the purpose.
Talking to reporters, Warring said the party will do a serious introspection about the result. Earlier, in his message to the party workers, Warring said: 'I acknowledge and appreciate the Congress workers in Ludhiana West for putting up the best fight against all odds when it was against the entire government machinery'.
Asserting that there was no big deal about the result, he said: 'This, after all, was just a byelection. Our fight will continue and we will take it to the logical conclusion in 2027.'

Govt boasting of 'one and a half years vs five years' can't even conduct basic elections: Gehlot

Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government, accusing it of shirking its constitutional responsibilities by delaying elections to Panchayati Raj institutions and urban local bodies. Gehlot said, "The government that boasts of 'one and a half years versus five years' has failed to conduct even basic democratic elections." He highlighted that Article 243-E of the Constitution mandates that Panchayati Raj elections must be held every five years without fail. "The current government is openly flouting constitutional provisions due to fear of an electoral defeat," he alleged. Gehlot further cited key Supreme Court rulings, including Goa Government vs Fauzia Imtiaz Sheikh and Punjab State Election Commission vs Punjab Government, which reaffirm that elections for local self-government bodies must be conducted every five years, as enshrined in the Constitution. 'Even the highest court of the country has made it clear -- these elections are not optional. They are a democratic necessity,' he stressed. The former CM claimed that the BJP's avoidance of timely elections reflects its nervousness about facing the public. 'They know the people are unhappy and might vote them out. That's why they're delaying elections on flimsy grounds,' he said. Gehlot urged the Election Commission and judiciary to intervene and ensure democratic processes are followed. 'Democracy is being weakened under this regime. If elections are not held on time, it sets a dangerous precedent for the country,' he warned. Over 6,500 Panchayati Raj institutions and over 50 municipal bodies in Rajasthan have completed their five-year term, but elections have not yet been conducted. The State Election Commission confirmed this recently in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query. The commission stated that no proposal for elections has been received so far, and elections cannot be held until delimitation and reorganisation processes are completed. The State Election Commission, in a submission to the High Court, explained that the work of delimitation and reorganisation is currently underway at the state government level, due to which, timely elections were not possible. As of January 2025, the tenure of over 6,500 Panchayats had ended. In the interim, the state government appointed sarpanches as administrators, a move that has been challenged in the High Court.

Nimisha Priya death sentence in Yemen: Congress urges PM Modi's ‘immediate intervention'; calls for ‘utmost priority'

NEW DELHI: Congress leader K C Venugopal on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging his immediate intervention to save Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kerala, who is scheduled to be executed in Yemen on July 16. In a letter, Venugopal appealed to the Prime Minister to take urgent diplomatic steps with Yemeni authorities to halt the execution. "While efforts have been made by the Action Council and her family to negotiate with the victim's family to accept 'blood money' (diyah), which could potentially spare her life, these negotiations have faced significant challenges, due to ongoing civil war and other internal disturbances," he wrote. He added, "Given the complexity of the situation, I request you to intervene in this matter with utmost priority, imploring all possible diplomatic measures with the Yemeni authorities and ensure that the death sentence be cancelled." Nimisha Priya, 37, was convicted in 2018 for the murder of a Yemeni national and has been on death row since the country's Supreme Judicial Council upheld her sentence in November 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Yemen permits resolution of such cases through diyah, or blood money, but the ongoing civil conflict in the country has made negotiations difficult. Her husband, Tomy Thomas, recently met Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar and said both central and state governments, as well as the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), were making efforts. 'I am in contact with Nimisha. It is possible to send text and voice messages to her. The Central government, State government and the MEA have been making efforts, and we expect a positive response,' he told ANI. The Congress appeal follows a similar call from Communist Party of India MP Sandosh Kumar, who wrote to external affairs minister S Jaishankar. Kumar said Nimisha's case 'has not only shaken the conscience of the public but also raised serious concerns about the lack of legal safeguards and the humanitarian dimensions of her ordeal.' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier confirmed that the government is 'aware of the sentencing' and is 'extending all possible help' in the matter.

Russia warns US, South Korea, Japan against alliance targeting North Korea

Russia's foreign minister on Saturday warned the US, South Korea and Japan against forming a security partnership targeting North Korea as he visited his country's ally for talks on further solidifying their booming military and other cooperation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov flew to North Korea's eastern Wonsan city on Friday for a meeting with his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui. Relations between Russia and North Korea have been flourishing in recent years, with North Korea supplying troops and ammunition to support Russia's war against Ukraine in return for military and economic assistance. That has raised concerns among South Korea, the US and others that Russia might also transfer to North Korea sensitive technologies that can increase the danger of its nuclear and missile programs. After a meeting with Choe on Saturday, Lavrov accused the US, South Korea and Japan of what he called their military buildups around North Korea. We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia, he told reporters, according to Russia's state Tass news agency. The US, South Korea and Japan have been expanding or restoring their trilateral military exercises in response to North Korea's advancing nuclear program. On Friday, the three countries held a joint air drill involving US nuclear-capable bombers near the Korean Peninsula, as their top military officers met in Seoul and urged North Korea to cease all unlawful activities that threaten regional security. North Korea views major US-led military drills as invasion rehearsals. It has long been argued that it's forced to develop nuclear weapons to defend itself from US military threats. Lavrov said Russia understands North Korea's decision to seek nuclear weapons. The technologies used by North Korea are the result of the work of its own scientists. We respect North Korea's aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing nuclear development, Lavrov said. During their meeting, Choe reiterated that North Korea unconditionally supports Russia's fight against Ukraine. She described ties between North Korea and Russia as the invincible alliance. Lavrov said he repeated Russia's gratitude for the contribution that North Korean troops made in efforts to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk border region. Wonsan city, the meeting venue, is where North Korea recently opened a mammoth beach resort that it says can accommodate nearly 20,000 people. In his comments at the start of his meeting with Choe, Lavrov said that I am sure that Russian tourists will be increasingly eager to come here. We will do everything we can to facilitate this, creating conditions for this, including air travel, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone is at the centre of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's push to boost tourism as a way to improve his country's troubled economy. But prospects for the biggest tourist complex in North Korea aren't clear, as the country appears unlikely to fully reopen its borders and embrace Western tourists anytime soon.
