'Make This A Promise, Don't Play Pakistan': Salman Butt Slams India After WCL Fiasco

Salman Butt has questioned India's withdrawal from the World Championship of Legends game against Pakistan, requesting them to avoid ICC tournaments too.
Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt has questioned India's stance of withdrawing from the match against their neighbours in the World Championship of Legends, adding that if India are so firm on their decision of not playing Pakistan, the teams shouldn't face off in ICC tournaments either.
A veterans' cricket game involving India and Pakistan in the tournament in Birmingham on Sunday, July 20, was cancelled after Indian cricketers, including Shikhar Dhawan, refused to be a part of it, citing the Pahalgam terror attack three months back.
The second edition of the England and Wales Cricket Board tournament, which is co-owned by Bollywood star Ajay Devgn, began on July 18 at Edgbaston in Birmingham and is scheduled for an August 2 final.
'The whole world is talking about them. What message have they sent to cricket as a whole and to the fans? What are you trying to show? What are you trying to prove? Now don't play in the World Cup…don't play against us in any ICC tournament. Make this a promise," Butt said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
'See, we understand that everything has its place. But now that you are interlinking, don't play against us at any level or tournament. Not even the Olympics. Please do that. I would love to see," Butt said.
'What is this mindset? I just can't understand. Who is making this decision? Those 4-5 people who decided not to play, because of them, others, who probably had the mindset to play, felt pressured," Butt added.
The former Pakistan cricketer said that the country wouldn't forget what India pulled off at the World Championship of Legends, adding that they will keep reminding them of their nationalism if they break their stance in ICC tournaments.
World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh is the skipper of the India Champions, while the team features the likes of Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf and Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa and Varun Aaron among others.
The WCL organisers shared a statement on their X account, detailing the decision to cancel and said that their intention while holding the game was to recreate some 'happy memories."

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill creates history, breaks Virat Kohli's record by...

Shubman Gill in action at Manchester Test. (PIC - PTI) New Delhi: The England tour is Shubman Gill's first Test series as captain and he has broken many records in this series. On Saturday, he created history by breaking Virat Kohli's record in India's second innings in the ongoing fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. What record did Shubman Gill break? Breaking Virat Kohli's record, he has become the Indian captain to score the most runs in a Test series against England. During the India-England Test series in 2016, Kohli played a total of five matches and scored 655 runs with the help of two centuries and two half-centuries. What's happening at the Manchester Test? Gill, who scored only 12 runs in the first innings of the Manchester Test, needed 37 runs in the second innings to overtake Kohli and he achieved this by hitting a four off Jofra Archer in the 17th over during the second session of the fourth day's play. Yashasvi Jaiswal holds the overall record for scoring the most runs for India in a Test series against England. During the five-match Test series between India and England in 2024, Jaiswal scored a total of 712 runs in five matches. Gill will have to score 55 more runs in the current match to break Jaiswal's record and achieve the number 1 position. Whose record is Shubman Gill chasing? Sunil Gavaskar holds the record of the Indian captain scoring the most runs in a Test series. During the India-West Indies Test series in 1978-79, Gavaskar played six matches and scored 732 runs. To break this record, Gill will have to score at least 114 runs in the second innings of the current Test. Gill scored a double century and two centuries in the first two Test matches of the current series against England. He has scored a half-century in the second innings of the Manchester Test.

Professional Golf Tour Of India Set To Launch Franchise League

Last Updated: The PGTI league is expected to feature a one-on-one match-play format to increase spectator interest, inspired by successful models in other sports. The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) is on the brink of launching a franchise-based league exclusively for professionals, tour CEO Amandeep Johl disclosed on Saturday. 'Yes, we are definitely going to start a league. We've got some very good offers, and within the next few weeks, we will sign a deal. It will be the PGTI League – strictly for professionals," Johl said. Johl elaborated that a franchise league must be centred around elite competition, explaining why the model excludes amateurs. 'A league can't be for amateurs. IPL is for professional cricketers. Football leagues around the world don't get amateurs to play, they field professionals. People come to watch high-quality sport, and golf is no different," he stated. The proposed format may include up to 10 franchises, each owning a roster of professional golfers in a team setup, with fixtures spread across several weeks. 'People want to come and watch high-class golf. My idea of a league is different from others – while some are doing it for amateurs, I want to do it for hardcore professionals," Johl asserted. 'If I'm a franchisee owner, I've got four, five, or six players on my team, and they go head-to-head with another team – one-on-one match play," Johl explained. 'Imagine Gaganjeet Bhullar playing Jeev Milkha Singh one-on-one, that's golf. People will come and watch that. People will say, 'I'm backing Jeev' or 'I'm backing Gaganjeet'. That's the kind of excitement we want to create," he concluded. With PTI Inputs view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
