July 5 (UPI) -- Two teens are dead and five others wounded after a mass shooting in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning.
The shooting killed two boys, ages 16 and 15, at about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Illinois and West Washington streets in downtown Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey blamed parents for allowing hundreds of teens to go unsupervised while out at night.
"This kind of violence ... is completely unacceptable and unnecessary," Bailey told media.
"We are not your children's keepers. You are," he added. "Parents and guardians have got to step up."
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other boy died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Four other shooting victims also were taken to local hospitals, and a fifth walked into a hospital.
Police found the victims while responding to a report of a fight at the same location and said four of the surviving shooting victims are teens, and the other is 21.
Two of the teens are 19-year-old adults, and the others are ages 16 and 17.
Police have not determined a motive but detained seven for questioning and recovered several firearms.
The mass shooting was among several violent incidents that occurred after the annual Independence Day fireworks ended on Friday night.
Bailey said police made 20 arrests during the night and recovered firearms from two juveniles in the downtown area before the mass shooting happened.
He said one was carrying a semi-automatic rifle that was stuffed into the youth's pants.

Florida man hijacks Key West sightseeing train for meth-fueled joyride on birthday

All aboard the crazy train! A man in Florida was arrested on his birthday Friday after authorities caught him absconding with a trackless sightseeing train, and even picking up passengers, while high on meth. Jonathan Patrick Winslow was celebrating his 57th trip around the sun on a raucous Independence Day when he turned up at the Conch Tour Train Depot in Key West and allegedly weaseled his way into conducting one of their vehicles. 4 Jonathan Patrick Winslow, 57, was arrested after hijacking a trackless sightseeing train. MCSO Winslow allegedly bamboozled a well-meaning employee into forking over the keys after claiming he used to work at the company years prior and requesting a tour of the train, according to an arrest report obtained by WPLG. The confused employee was left in the dust when Winslow allegedly sped away, thinking that surely the stranger must've had permission to take the train. He did not have permission to take the train, police said. Officers responded to the depot when the stolen train was reported. It could be tracked via GPS, but was apparently already downtown. Authorities had a general idea of who they were looking for almost immediately, as Winslow had left his Kia still running in the parking lot of the depot blasting rock music, according to an arrest report. Police were able to nab Winslow and the train was intact. He'd somehow cajoled two oblivious strangers into joining him for the ride, authorities said. 4 Winslow was high on meth when he nabbed the train. Local10/MCSO Winslow 'exhibited rapid speech and appeared excited' even when police told him about the charges he'd face. He claimed he only 'borrowed' the train, again insisted he used to work for the company and noted that 'today is [my] birthday,' according to the report. 4 Winslow even managed to corral two passersby into taking the ride with him. Facebook/Conch Tour Train Winslow was carted off to the county jail. When he was being searched, a corrections deputy allegedly found a pipe hidden in his pocket. Winslow tried to insist that it was 'a weed pipe,' but authorities said it was a methamphetamine pipe. The short-lived conductor faces charges for burglary, grand theft auto and possession of drug paraphernalia. 4 Winslow tried to plead with the cops, explaining that 'today is his birthday.' Local10/MCSO In January, a group of masked teenagers took an empty NYC subway train for a joyride and even posted their entire escapade on Instagram. Two of the teens, including one with a prior criminal record, were busted in February and charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Illegal July Fourth firework display shoots into crowd at bustling NYC park, injuring several — who say cops didn't protect them

Let freedom ring… in your ears. A bozo blasted illegal fireworks into a crowd of Fourth of July revelers in a Greenpoint park, leaving one woman with a perforated eardrum and her hair set aflame, she fearfully told The Post. Dozens of other terrified onlookers in Newtown Barge Park scattered as the wayward fireworks whizzed into the crowd, directly hitting several revelers and sending parents running to save their screaming children, according to the woman and a video obtained by The Post. 'Some of those came sailing right towards my head … it detonated like right next to my ear,' she said. 4 Illegal fireworks getting shot off at Newtown Barge Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Independence Day. Obtained by NY Post The woman — who wished not to be identified out of concern for her safety after being threatened by the rogue pyrotechnician — said the blast caused her to 'go deaf in that ear for about a minute,' and she still had not fully regained her hearing or sense of balance days later. The terrifying pyrotechnics brouhaha unfolded July 4 around 9:40 p.m., as families and other large groups of patriotic celebrants gathered in the park to watch the Macy's fireworks show. But instead of staying content with Macy's amazing display over the Brooklyn Bridge, one dope in a large group cooking out in the park began to light large 'commercial-grade' fireworks behind the crowd, the woman said. The first few fraudulent fireworks shot up into the air, but by the fourth volley some offshoots flew horizontally into the crowd, she said. 4 People ducking for cover after a firework went off in Greenpoint. Obtained by NY Post One blast, besides rocking the woman's eardrum, set her hair on fire, she said. A father, accompanied by two children, also had a 'big burn' on his shirt from the fireworks, she recalled. Afterward, the woman and her partner confronted the unhinged parkgoers — who not only refused to apologize, but also tried to escort the pair from the park, she alleged. 'It felt very threatening, the way that they were walking us away from the situation,' she said, recalling there was still 'visible chaos' in the park at the time. 4 A woman at the park was left with a damaged eardrum and her hair set on fire. Obtained by NY Post Three cops approached the group after noticing they were escorting the couple out of the park, but when the woman explained that fireworks had been detonated and hit people in the crowd, a cop allegedly told her he could only send EMS for a medical evaluation. 'I then clearly felt very unsafe. I was like, you know, here's the police, they don't side with me. Here's all these people that are, you know, intimidating us,' she said. The couple left the park and were eventually able to file a police report after connecting with 911 dispatchers multiple times — who sent EMS — and flagging down other neighborhood cops patrolling the neighborhood, she said. 4 People running from a firework shot off at the Greenpoint park. Obtained by NY Post The fireworks knucklehead and his friends continued to party untroubled by cops for 45 minutes, leaving them to avoid any sort of justice that night, the woman alleged. 'There just was so much dismissal of this situation from the people that did it, from the police … it just leads to this feeling that we collectively In New York no longer care about safety, including during things like the Macy's fireworks, which little kids come to see, and there were little kids in the park,' she said. A police report has been filed for reckless endangerment, but no arrests have been made, according to the NYPD. The incident is still under investigation, cops said.

10 dead, dozens arrested in more anti-government protests in Kenya

July 7 (UPI) -- At least 10 people were shot dead and 29 injured in Kenya as anti-government protests erupted after restarting early last month. Two bodies initially were taken to Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi, on the outskirts of the capital city of Nairobi, after suffering apparent gunshot wounds. Hundreds of protestors gathered outside the hospital to demand the bodies, local medic Dr. Aron Sikuku told the BBC. "Police operated in plainclothes and unmarked vehicles" on Monday and collaborated with "armed criminal gangs in Nairobi, Kajiado, Nakuru, Kiambu, and Eldoret," according to the state-run Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KHRC) in a scathing report on excessive police force. Kenyan police officials have denied such previous accusations. On Sunday, Kenyan security agencies were "on high alert to deal decisively with criminals and other elements of ill intent who may seek to infiltrate peaceful processions to cause havoc, mayhem, or destruction of property," Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen posted on X earlier that day. Meanwhile, government officials have yet to confirm Monday's reported fatalities. The demonstrations marked the 35th anniversary of Kenya's Saba Saba protests, meaning "seven-seven," which launched in 1990 to push for multiparty democracy in the African nation. Reports indicate that hundreds of early morning commuters and overnight travelers were stranded in Nairobi, with few vehicles allowed to enter the city. Also, the road to key government sites -- such as Kenya's parliament building and the presidential residence -- were barricaded with razor wire. According to the Nation, a leading Kenyan newspaper, the nationwide demonstrations spread to at least 17 of Kenya's 47 counties. Some school officials advised students to remain home over fears of violence. Tear gas and water cannons were used by authorities as clashes broke out and fires lit in parts of Nairobi in attempts to breach police barricades. Hundreds were stranded by midmorning inside and outside the center of the city, with major roads closed and many commuters unable to afford to pay extra money for transit to their destination. "We want the government to engage in a dialogue with Gen Zs so all this can come to an end," Humphrey Gumbishi, a bus driver, told the BBC. He said they started traveling at 8:30 p.m. local time Sunday night only to find police blocks. The ongoing demonstrations, largely led by Gen-Z participants, have demanded greater accountability, good governance and justice for victims of police brutality. The continued wave of deadly anti-government protests started last year against President William Ruto's unpopular tax policies amid rising everyday costs as scores of Kenyans were killed at the time after storming parliament in June 2024. At least 19 citizens were killed a few weeks ago on June 25 as thousands of businesses were looted and destroyed in one day as violent activity gripped the country and government officials banned live TV coverage in attempts to quell violence. In early June, protests again erupted, spurred by the questionable death in police custody of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang. On Sunday, the Kenyan Human Rights Commission claimed "hired goons" allegedly "sent by the state to silence dissent" stormed the NGO's office and "violently" disrupted a press conference by Kenyan mothers "calling for an end to arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings targeting protesters ahead of Saba Saba demonstrations." Ex-Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga canceled a scheduled appearance in Nairobi, saying "the roadblocks all over town which made it difficult for people to make it to Kamukunji" meant he did not "join Kenyans in commemorating this important day." Odinga was arrested last year after Saba Saba but then threw his support to Ruto's government. Ruto was declared the winner with just over 50% of the vote versus Odinga's 48.8% in the African nation's August 2022 presidential election in which the opposition party leader suggested was not a free or fair vote. On Monday, he blasted what he described as Kenya's "rogue police force that shoots people with impunity, a force inherited from the colonialists," and called for a national dialogue on reforming Kenyan police agencies.
