Aqua Line extension till Boraki multi-modal hub gets Centre's nod
Noida: Centre has cleared the extension of Noida Metro's Aqua Line up to Boraki, less than an hour's drive from Jewar, which will take the city's transit network a step closer to the upcoming Noida International Airport. The 2.6-km-long elevated stretch will add two new stations—Junpat and Boraki—at a cost of Rs 416 crore. The project is expected to be ready in three years. The metro corridor extension is to take the Aqua Line to the proposed multi-modal transport hub at Boraki, where UP govt plans to integrate the Delhi-Howrah rail corridor with an inter-state bus terminal and rapid rail till Ghaziabad. The Greater Noida rail station at Boraki is being designed as NCR's gateway to the eastern part of the country. "Once both the corridors are operational, it will become easier for commuters from Noida and Greater Noida to reach the airport," he said. The funding for the new metro corridor will be shared by the Centre and UP govt (20% each), with the remaining 60% coming through a loan from the National Capital Region Planning Board. NMRC estimates that ridership on the new segment could reach 60,000 daily by 2031. The Aqua Line currently runs 29.7km between Sector 51 in Noida and Depot Station in Jaitpur. NMRC has also proposed a 17-km extension from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park V in Greater Noida, which awaits clearance from the Centre. Similarly, the 11.6km corridor linking Sector 142 station to Botanical Garden via eight new stations is pending approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The current Aqua Line sees a daily average ridership of nearly 57,000 passengers, according to NMRC data.

Surat airport taxiway clears final hurdle as Yakshini tree transplanted
S Tired of too many ads? go ad free now urat: Surat airport authorities have finally removed and transplanted a tree that was obstructing the newly constructed parallel taxiway, enabling its operationalisation. The 10-foot tree, believed to be the sacred abode of a Yakshini (a female nature spirit), was shifted within the airport premises rather than being cut down due to religious beliefs. The 2,905-metre taxiway, built at a cost of Rs 63 crore, has been ready since March 31. However, operations were delayed as the tree stood near the 'Lalbai Mata' temple and held religious significance for local villagers. "The tree was considered auspicious as it was beside the temple. We also shifted the temple structure with it. The idol had already been moved to the new location two years ago. Now that the tree is relocated, the DGCA will soon inspect the taxiway. Once approved, flight operations will become more efficient," a senior airport official said. Officials waited for the monsoon to begin so that the tree could adapt better to its new location using natural rainwater. It has now been replanted near the airport fire station, close to gate number 3 in the operational area. Airport and fire personnel stationed nearby will care for the tree. The matter of removing the tree was also raised earlier during an Airport Advisory Committee meeting chaired by Union minister CR Patil.

Tourism dept spent Rs 25cr to lure domestic travellers to Goa
Porvorim: Goa's tourism department spent Rs 26.3 crore to promote Goa internationally through roadshows and international travel expos since 2022, tourism minister Rohan Khaunte told the legislative assembly on Thursday. The tourism department's data suggests that a nearly similar amount — Rs 24.9 crore — was spent to promote Goa in India itself during the same period. The department's expenditure on international roadshows and trade events jumped from Rs 1.3 crore in 2020 to Rs 10.9 crore in 2024, not including travel allowance and other expenses for the officials who attended the events. The visits were approved by chief minister Pramod Sawant, said Khaunte. Data shows that the department spent Rs 24.9 crore on 31 roadshows organised by it and Goa Tourism Development Corporation from March 2022. Between Jan and June, Goa recorded a total of 57.1 lakh tourist arrivals, with domestic tourists pegged at 34.6 lakh through Goa International Airport at Dabolim and 22.5 lakh through Manohar International Airport at Mopa. The minister said that international tourist arrivals and international flights increased because of the department's sustained global destination promotion. The opposition has repeatedly attacked the tourism department for wasteful expenditure on roadshows, both in domestic markets and at international travel marts. The tourism department has been visiting Germany, Spain, Dubai, Singapore, London, Austria, Japan, and Portugal to attract international tourists to Goa. Khaunte said that the state has asked govt to offer the visa-on-arrival facility to select countries.
