Gareth Bale makes £40m takeover offer for Cardiff after breaking silence on bid
An official bid has been made for Cardiff City by a consortium fronted by Wales legend Gareth Bale. The Cardiff-native has launched a £40million offer for his hometown club despite Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan indicating he will not sell the club to the former Real Madrid star's group.
Bale, 35, is said to be backed by US investors in hoping to acquire the club who were relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of last season.
The side, who were in the Premier League as recently as 2019, failed to maintain their place in the Championship to move into the third tier for the first time in more than 20 years. While that is reported to have prompted a bid, Tan is said to consider it derisory having invested more than £200m into the club.
The £40m offer is likely to see an instant rejection, per the Times. Bale's consortium have already been associated with a failed bid to purchase Plymouth Argyle.
The private equity group's bid is not even half of the fee paid for Bale by Real Madrid in 2013. Tan was part of a Malaysian consortium that initially made a £5m investment for 30 per cent of Cardiff City before becoming the majority shareholder and steadily increasing his stake to 98 per cent by 2013.
Following a career where he played for Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LA FC, Bale announced his retirement from professional football following the 2022 World Cup. While famed for his interest in golf, Bale appears happy to return to football in a new capacity.
'We are interested in getting Cardiff,' Bale told Sky Sports last month. 'It's my home club, it's where I grew up and my uncle used to play for them.
"To be involved with an ownership group would be a dream come true. It is a club close to my heart and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs.
'I know how amazing the Welsh fans and Cardiff fans are. It would be amazing to try and do something together.
"We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future, but hopefully we can get something done."
Bale was present for the BMW International Open 2025 pro-am at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried earlier this week. After already being part of the fields at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Alfred Dunhill Links, Bale made his third appearance in Munich alongside the likes of Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

As things stand, the only wide options available to Russell Martin are Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland – a thin pool that lacks the proven, consistent quality the club are seeking in those positions. Patati may well be one, while they've also been linked with Como's Samuel Ballet this week and the 24-year-old could be another on the way in if Rangers decide to ramp things up. They may however want to first see where the land lies with Hamza Igamane, because if his move to Lille goes through at the £15m price Rangers are demanding, that could free up funds to spend bigger on forward targets than the club had previously planned to. As well as the new trio of wide men, at the other end it's believed deals are close for Coady and Djiga. The Ibrox side are in talks with Leicester to land Englishman Coady, who is understood to be keen on the move north. Djiga, meanwhile, is poised to come in on loan from Wolves next week – well in time for the Champions League qualifying opener with Panathinaikos later this month. All five of those deals are expected to be independent of any exits. A new striker, for instance, will presumably catapult up the shopping list if and when deals are agreed to sell Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, with Danilo the only senior striking option outside that pair. Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly wants to see Real Madrid forward Rodrygo join him in Riyadh ahead of the 2025-26 season. Ronaldo recently signed a new contract with Al-Nassr, who finished third in the most recent edition of the Saudi Pro League. Meanwhile, Rodrygo has three years left to run on his current deal in Madrid but he has been heavily linked with a summer departure. Arsenal have been cited as his most likely destination should he leave the Bernabeu, but Ronaldo is said to be leading calls for him to join Al-Nassr instead. According to Sky Sport, Al-Nassr chiefs have contacted Rodrygo's entourage after Ronaldo singled out the Brazilian as a priority target. Rodrygo, 24, has been with Madrid for six seasons and has scored 68 goals in 269 games for the Spanish giants. But he has only been selected as a starter once in Madrid's first five matches under new manager Xabi Alonso, who is rumoured to be willing to sell him this summer. Arsenal and Al-Nassr are both in the market for attacking reinforcements. Liverpool's Luis Diaz and Gunners wideman Gabriel Martinelli are also believed to be on Al-Nassr's shortlist of targets. Diaz appears set to stay at Anfield, while an Al-Nassr move for Martinelli would seemingly be much more likely were Rodrygo to move to north London. Ronaldo, 40, has extended his Al-Nassr contract until June 2027. He will be hoping to win the Saudi Pro League title before that contract expires.
