China detained activist-singer, says Tibetan exile govt

A young Tibetan singer and activist has been detained by Chinese authorities, the India-based Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) said.
Tzukte, popularly known as Asang, was taken into custody sometime in early July after he sang a song eulogising Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, the CTA said in a statement Saturday (July 27, 2025).
The CTA, which functions as a government-in-exile but is not officially recognised by any country, said the arrest was "part of Beijing's broader campaign to suppress Tibetan voices, specially Tibetan artists and writers".
China considers Tibet an inalienable part of its territory and has ruled the region with an iron fist since its troops crushed an uprising for autonomy in 1959.
Chinese authorities did not respond to a request for comment.
"His detention, without charge or information on his whereabouts, violates international human rights norms and underscores China's ongoing assault on freedom of expression, cultural rights, and religious belief in Tibet," the CTA said.
Asang, who is in his twenties, is a student of Gebe, a prominent Tibetan singer supporting the Tibetan cause through his music.
Earlier this year, Asang reportedly appeared in public in the Ngawa region of Sichuan province with the word "Tibet" written on his forehead — a gesture that drew widespread praise online but also intensified scrutiny from officials.
Rights activists have regularly voiced alarm at Beijing's alleged efforts to erase cultural and religious identity in Tibet.

2 satellite phone signals 17 days apart, help from nomads, and a peak named Mahadev – inside the operation that killed 3 Pahalgam terrorists

It was the detection of a signal emitted from a Chinese satellite phone used by the Pahalgam attackers on Saturday – the second time in the last 17 days – that led the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police to them on Mulnar Peak near Lidwas Meadow of Mahadev Peak, a strategically important location in Zabarwan range, Dachigam forests, on the outskirts of Srinagar town. The satellite phone was among various items, including arms, ammunition and explosives, later seized from the slain terrorists, who Home Minister Amit Shah said are the same as the ones who killed 26 civilians on April 22. According to highly placed sources, the men had also used the satellite phone on July 11 in the Baisaran area. Since then, multiple teams of the Army and the police had been looking for them, even during the night, which forced them to keep changing their locations. On Saturday, when security forces and the police detected the satellite phone signal from the Mahadev Peak area, they immediately launched what security agencies would later call Op Mahadev. The signal was tracked to the Dachigam area, which has the nearest human habitation nearly 30 kilometres away at Chak Dara. While Baisaran in Anantnag district and Dachigam forests in Srinagar are nearly 120 kilometres away by road, their distance through the forest is around 40-50 kilometres, with Aru Wildlife Sanctuary falling in between. In a meticulously planned and swift operation, security forces and the police, based on information provided by local nomads about the area, took on the terrorists who were caught unawares, resting under a makeshift tent around 11.30 am Monday, sources said. The ensuing fierce gunfight lasted nearly three hours, and the Army and police managed to kill all three men – top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Suleiman Shah, who had undergone training at LeT's Muridkee terror headquarters, Hamza Afghani and Jibran, all Pakistani nationals. Jibran, sources said, was also involved in the killing of six people working on the construction of Z-Morh tunnel at Gaganeer on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Ganderbal district in October last year. Fully aware that the terrorists are likely high-value targets, authorities took their time to confirm their identities. For this, they checked with family members of those killed in Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley on April 22, as well as two jailed locals – Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar – who allegedly harboured the terrorists at their seasonal dhok at Hill Park area. Shah also detailed how their identities were confirmed: 'Yesterday's operation saw the death of three who killed our citizens… NIA had kept those who helped these terrorists in custody, and they confirmed that these three were the ones who conducted the terror attack in Pahalgam. We didn't believe this either. Cartridges recovered at the site of attack were analysed, and a ballistic report was prepared. Three rifles were recovered yesterday – one M9 American rifle and two AK-47s. These rifles were sent to Chandigarh, and the cartridges were matched. Then, it was fixed that these three rifles were used to kill our people.'

Visakhapatnam to emerge as Andhra Pradesh's growth engine: CM Chandrababu

As part of his ongoing visit to Singapore on Tuesday (July 29, 2025), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held meetings with representatives from major global firms—Keppel Corporation, GIC (Government of Singapore Investment Corporation), and Wilmar International—seeking strategic partnerships to transform Andhra Pradesh, particularly Visakhapatnam, into a dynamic hub for growth and innovation. In a key interaction, the Chief Minister met Lim Yeang Yeow, Executive Director of KeppelCorporation, a Singapore-based conglomerate known for its expertise in urban development, infrastructure, and commercial real estate. The duo discussed Keppel's prior engagement in Amaravati's development and explored renewed opportunities for collaboration. Mr. Naidu invited Keppel to take part in developing projects across IT, commerce, and housing sectors in Visakhapatnam, which he envisions as the future growth engine of Andhra Pradesh. Later, Mr. Naidu held talks with Bryan Yeo, Chief Investment Officer of GIC, one of Singapore's largest sovereign wealth funds. The discussion focused on long-term partnerships and stable investments in the state, particularly in real estate, industrial development, urban infrastructure, healthcare, education, and civic amenities. The Chief Minister assured GIC that Andhra Pradesh would provide a supportive ecosystem for sustainable investments in these critical sectors and emphasized the vast potential the state holds. In a separate meeting, Mr. Naidu met Kuok Khoon Hong, Chairman and CEO of Wilmar International, a global agri-business giant. The two leaders explored investment opportunities in food processing, edible oils, and agri-infrastructure. Mr. Naidu proposed that Wilmar can collaborate with the state to build a value-based agricultural market that directly benefits farmers and boosts the agro-economy. In response, Wilmar expressed keen interest in deploying its technological capabilities to support these efforts..

From paper to portal: Goa rolls out digital push for village panchayat services

In a sweeping overhaul, almost all village panchayat services in Goa were being shifted online in a phased manner, bringing grassroots governance into the digital age, a Minister has informed in the State Assembly. The shift to digital platforms will ensure people no longer have to physically visit panchayat offices for basic services, Goa Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said in the House on late Monday (July 28, 2025) evening during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the State Assembly. Mr. Godinho also said an Artificial Intelligence-based facial recognition attendance system across all village panchayats will be launched from August 1. "From income certificates to house repair permissions, nine major services are already available online. We are working towards 100% digitisation of all panchayat services," he said. There are 186 village panchayats across both the North Goa and South Goa districts. Mr. Godinho said services like the issuance of residence, income and character certificates, NOCs for water and electricity connections, registration and renewal of trade and establishment licences and permissions for house repairs are already available online. From next month onwards, proceedings of the panchayat meetings and certified copies of resolutions adopted by the panchayats would be available online, he said. "This will allow people to view decisions taken by their local panchayats, strengthening transparency and accountability," the Minister told the House. He acknowledged that some delays were being faced in hosting services online due to a contractor failing to deliver on time, but assured the government was accelerating the process. The government plans to launch online services in five village panchayats initially, adding 20 to 30 more every month thereafter, Mr. Godinho said. The State will digitise nearly 10 lakh house tax records and eight lakh trade licence records of all panchayats in the coastal State, he said. In future, the services, including house tax payments, issuance of construction licences, occupancy certificates and applications for lease rent, will be added to the online portal, he said. "I had promised in the last session that there would be reforms to bring more digitisation and streamline procedures at the panchayat level. We are on track to deliver that," Mr. Godinho said. Speaking further, the Minister also announced the rollout of an AI-based facial recognition attendance system across all village panchayats from August 1. This system, which has already undergone a soft trial, will be supported by geo-tagging to ensure the staff attendance is marked only from designated locations, he said. "If the attendance is marked from outside the designated area, the employee must provide a valid reason. This will help improve punctuality and discipline in the functioning of the panchayat staff," he added.
