Oman's first green ammonia project begins receiving key cargo
MUSCAT, JUNE 27 Project cargo has begun arriving at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) for Oman's first green hydrogen and ammonia venture — a landmark initiative set to kickstart the Sultanate of Oman's gigawatt-scale green energy industry. Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Company SAOC (GHC), a wholly owned subsidiary of India-based renewable energy developer ACME Group, is developing the green ammonia plant with an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). The project, estimated at around $750 million, is designed for phased expansion to 1.1 million tpa. Last week, Khimji Ramdas Shipping announced the successful discharge and inland delivery of the first major consignment of project cargo from the Port of Duqm to the plant site. The shipment comprised 14 packages of oversized equipment, including a single unit weighing 120 metric tonnes. This shipment marks the first in a series of heavy cargo deliveries expected at Port of Duqm in the run-up to the plant's scheduled commissioning in Q1 2027. Forthcoming consignments will include solar PV modules, trackers and electrolysers — key components already under contract as part of the project's broader supply chain. Earlier this month, GameChange Solar, a global leader in solar tracking systems, announced a deal to supply its Genius Tracker technology for a 450 MWp solar installation that will generate renewable electricity for the project. The 1P single-row tracker system is engineered to withstand high winds and extreme weather conditions, making it suitable for Al Duqm's coastal environment. Leading Chinese manufacturer Sungrow Hydrogen revealed it had been contracted to supply multiple sets of 1000 Nm³/h alkaline electrolysis systems, along with flexible green hydrogen production solutions. Deliveries are expected to be completed by end-2025. Fellow Chinese company Shuangliang Hydrogen has also secured a contract to supply hydrogen production equipment for the same project, with delivery similarly due by year-end. In parallel, UAE-based DarkOcen Geostar recently completed the fieldwork phase of an offshore geotechnical investigation at SEZAD. The campaign included borehole drilling, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and evaluations of pipeline corridors and marine anchor points to support the development of future marine infrastructure for the ammonia plant. The Duqm green ammonia project is one of nine large-scale green hydrogen initiatives planned for development across Oman's Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates over the next decade. These projects collectively represent investments exceeding $40 billion. The timely delivery and execution of the Duqm plant is seen as pivotal to unlocking Oman's broader hydrogen strategy. As part of a long-term offtake agreement signed last year, Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara will lift the full annual output from the first phase — 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia — reinforcing the project's strong commercial foundation.

Why India needs a Genomic Protection Act now
The recent implosion of 23andMe, a once-celebrated pioneer of direct-to-consumer genetic testing, should not merely be viewed as a Silicon Valley story gone wrong. It is a powerful cautionary tale for India, which now stands on the threshold of a genomic someone deeply involved in precision medicine and longevity care, it is time for India to go beyond fragmented data protection frameworks and enact a dedicated Genomic Protection Act, one that prioritises clinical oversight, ethical stewardship, and individual is a genetic mosaic. With more than 4,000 distinct ethno-linguistic communities, centuries of endogamy, and a vast reservoir of rare variants, our population represents both a treasure trove for research and a potential minefield for exploitation. The collapse of 23andMe was not simply about a business model failing. It was about trust being eroded. It showed what happens when data privacy becomes an afterthought and genetic results are served without medical interpretation, leading not to empowerment, but anxiety. We must not repeat these data is not like browsing history. It cannot be deleted or changed. It holds information not just about the individual, but about their children, communities, and future it's leaked or misused, the consequences are irreversible. In India, where public awareness about data rights is still evolving and health literacy varies greatly, the risks of commodifying DNA are the Digital Personal Data Protection Act is a step forward. An individual must have the right to know who accessed their genome and for what Governance: As India moves into population genomics and public-private collaborations, our policies must ensure that innovation does not outpace regulation. Genomic information must never become a tool for discrimination, be it in insurance, employment, or has the opportunity to construct a gold-standard genomic ecosystem, one that learns from global missteps and roots itself in trust, transparency, and scientific integrity. The collapse of 23andMe is not the end of consumer genomics. It is a wake-up call. We must lead with care, not just not a question of whether India will embrace genomics. The question is whether we will do it responsibly. A Genomic Protection Act is no longer optional. Auspicious signs: how the Dalai Lama is identified
China says Tibet is an integral part of the country, and many exiled Tibetans fear Beijing will name a rival successor, bolstering control over a land it poured troops into in 1950. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born to a farming family in 1935 and has spent most of his life in exile in India. He has said that if there is a successor, they will come from the "free world" outside China's control. Here is how previous reincarnations were identified -- and what the current Dalai Lama says will happen. Oracles With the Dalai Lama turning 90 on July 6, he has said he will consult Tibetan religious traditions and the Tibetan public to see "if there is a consensus that the Dalai Lama institution should continue". He has said he will "leave clear written instructions" for the future. But he has alternatively suggested his successor could be a girl, or an insect, or that his spirit could transfer or "emanate" to an adult. Responsibility for the recognition lies with the India-based Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The search and recognition of another leader must be "in accordance with past Tibetan Buddhist tradition", he said. That includes consulting a protector deity, Palden Lhamo, and the oracle of Dorje Drakden, also known as Nechung, who communicates through a medium in a trance. Reincarnation recognition Tibetan Buddhists believe in all reincarnations of the "Bodhisattva of Compassion", an enlightened being who serves humanity by delaying salvation through another rebirth. All so far have been men or boys, often identified as toddlers and taking up the role only as teenagers. The last identification process was held in 1937. The current Dalai Lama, then aged two, was identified when he passed a test posed by monks by correctly pointing to objects that had belonged to his predecessor. - Auspicious signs - Others were revealed by special signs. The year the eighth Dalai Lama was born, in 1758, was marked by bumper harvests and a rainbow that seemingly touched his mother. He was finally identified after trying to sit in a lotus meditation position as a toddler. "Most ordinary beings forget their past lives," the Dalai Lama wrote in 2011. "We need to use evidence-based logic to prove past and future rebirths to them." Golden urn and dough balls Divination, including picking names written on paper, has also been used to confirm a candidate is correct. One method conceals the paper inside balls of dough. Another time, the name was plucked from a golden urn. That urn is now held by Beijing, and the current Dalai Lama has warned that, when used dishonestly, it lacks "any spiritual quality". Tibet and abroad Dalai Lamas have come from noble families and nomadic herders. Most were born in central Tibetan regions, one came from Mongolia, and another was born in India. The Sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born in 1682 in Tawang, in India's northeastern Arunachal Pradesh region. - Secrecy and disguise - Past decisions have also been kept secret for years. The Fifth Dalai Lama, Lobsang Gyatso, was born in 1617 and recognised as a toddler. But his discovery was kept hidden for more than two decades due to a "turbulent political situation", the Dalai Lama's office says. And, when he died, he told monks to say he was simply on a "long retreat". When visitors came, an old monk would pose in his place, wearing a "hat and eyeshadow to conceal the fact that he lacked the Dalai Lama's piercing eyes". It would take 15 years before his successor was announced.

Police intelligence behind B.C. call for Bishnoi gang's terror listing: minister
British Columbia's public safety minister said police intelligence had linked many cases of extortion against the South Asian community to India's Lawrence Bishnoi gang, giving the government confidence to recently seek its listing as a terrorist organization. Garry Begg, who is also solicitor general, said Thursday that the provincial government was providing $100,000 to set up a 60-day Crime Stoppers awareness campaign for victims in an effort to encourage witnesses to come forward. 'It's important that we realize that there is fear in the community at large,' Begg said, adding that it is something the awareness campaign aims to address. 'A situation like this creates a level of awareness that helps people who are victims or who are aware of victims understand that this is a society problem,' he said. 'If I could speak directly to the community — if you are a victim of extortion, if you do receive a call, the most important thing that you can do is report it to the police.' Premier David Eby said last week he would ask the federal government to declare the India-based gang a terrorist organization, which would allow Canada to freeze its assets and give police more tools to combat their crimes. Begg said the Bishnoi gang had 'publicly linked themselves' to a number of cases locally. 'And through our co-operation with international police agencies and local police, we're satisfied — that is, the government is satisfied — that their attempts to link themselves to the crimes committed here comprise enough for the federal government to accede to our request to identify them as a terrorist group,' he said. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said on Wednesday that her city supported the action, calling the extortion attempts 'economic terrorism.' She said victims must not stay silent out of fear, and should report all extortion threats. 'The violence and intimidation our community faces are unacceptable,' Locke's statement said. 'We have seen a disturbing rise in extortions, threats of violence, and ongoing shootings linked to these criminal organizations.' Locke also said many Surrey residents were 'too frightened to go to police' to report similar threats. 'Our community members must feel confident to report these crimes,' she said. 'We must ask ourselves why they are scared. Fear should never silence victims or witnesses.' Police have previously said that South Asian community members have been extorted of cash under the threat of violence or death, and that the Bishnoi gang based in India has been linked to some threats. Surrey Police Service Chief Const. Norm Lipinski said on Thursday that there had been 12 files of alleged extortions in the community since the beginning of this year, although none had been put forward to the Crown for prosecution. 'We feel that is under-reported,' Lipinski said of the number of files being investigated as possible extortion cases. Police in nearby Abbotsford, B.C., said in 2023 that they were investigating cases linked to the Bishnoi gang involving affluent South Asian community members being extorted. Surrey community members gathered last weekend to discuss the issue, while police have said there has been an uptick in complaints about threats of violence delivered through letters, calls and online messages. Eby said on Wednesday that B.C. had reached out to both Ontario and Alberta because they were 'similarly affected by this extortion conduct,' encouraging them to also push for the Bishnoi gang to be declared a terrorist organization in Canada. 'We believe that the more provinces that are supportive, the faster the federal government will move on this,' Eby said, adding that Begg had also reached out to his federal counterpart, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree. 'We hope they're able to move very quickly to support police by declaring this organization (and) any other allegedly involved organizations in this designation, so that police have the tools that they need to end this conduct as quickly as possible.'
