Kerala: CPI-M youth wing warns against protests targeting Health Minister Veena George

Thiruvananthapuram: The youth wing of the CPI-M -- the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) -- on Saturday warned the opposition protesters that they will not sit idle if State Health Minister Veena George is targeted. The DYFI said it will go to any extent to protect George as there is no reason to target her over the recent building collapse in which a woman was killed. For the second day in succession, the Congress-led UDF and the BJP workers have been on a rampage and clashed with the police across the state demanding the resignation of George. Fifty-six-year-old Bindu was killed after a toilet block of the Kottayam Medical College hospital came down on Thursday. There has been a massive public ire against Kerala Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan and George, who after reaching the place, said that just two people suffered minor injuries and no one was buried beneath the debris. On Saturday, he wondered: 'Did the Health Minister pull down the building? When an aircraft crashes, should the Prime Minister resign? Did anyone resign in Karnataka when people died in a stampede?" Following these remarks, he also had to face the ire of the protesters at Angamali. He was shown black flags by irate Congress workers when he arrived for an official function. Former Kerala unit BJP president K. Surendran said the state's health department has become a curse, while inaugurating a protest march of his party workers at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital. 'It's all round chaos in the health sector with a serious shortage of medicines... surgeries are getting delayed, wrong medicines are given to patients and when the situation is going from bad to worse, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has left to the US for his medical treatment. Vijayan himself said now even the rich seek treatment from the government hospitals here, then why is he going to the US,' Surendran questioned. Veteran Congress legislator Ramesh Chennithala said George is an incapable Minister. "Due to her inability to deal with issues, the health sector in Kerala is in tantrums. Vijayan before leaving to the US should have got the resignation letter from George. The time is not far when just like the building collapsed at Kottayam, the Vijayan government is all set to collapse,' said Chennithala.

Ukraine intensifies drone strikes, hits Russian air bases

Ukraine's military General Staff said that Ukrainian forces had struck the Borisoglebsk air base in Russia's Voronezh region, describing it as the home base of Russia's Su-34, Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets read more In this photo provided by the Ukrainian Emergency Service, emergency services personnel work to extinguish a fire following a Russian attack in Kharkiv region, Ukraine. AP Ukraine said it struck a Russian air base on Saturday, while Russia continued to pound Ukraine with hundreds of drones overnight as part of a stepped-up bombing campaign that has dashed hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the more than 3-year-old war. Ukraine's military General Staff said that Ukrainian forces had struck the Borisoglebsk air base in Russia's Voronezh region, describing it as the home base of Russia's Su-34, Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Writing on Facebook, the General Staff said it hit a depot containing glide bombs, a training aircraft and 'possibly other aircraft.' Russian officials did not immediately comment on the attack. Such attacks on Russian air bases aim to dent Russia's military capability and demonstrate Ukraine's capability to hit high-value targets in Russia. Last month, Ukraine said it destroyed more than 40 Russian planes stationed at several airfields deep in Russia's territory in a surprise drone attack. Russia fired 322 drones and decoys into Ukraine overnight into Saturday, Ukraine's air force said. Of these, 157 were shot down and 135 were lost, likely having been electronically jammed. According to the air force, Ukraine's western Khmelnytskyi region was the main target of the attack. Regional Gov. Serhii Tyurin said Saturday that no damage, injuries or deaths had been reported. Russia has been stepping up its long-range attacks on Ukraine. Waves of drones and missiles targeted Kyiv overnight into Friday in the largest aerial assault since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. On Saturday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the number of people killed in the assault had increased to two. A further 31 people were wounded. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The fresh wave of attacks came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that he had a 'very important and productive' phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. The two leaders discussed how Ukrainian air defenses might be strengthened, possible joint weapons production between the U.S. and Ukraine, and broader U.S-led efforts to end the war with Russia, according to a statement by Zelenskyy. Asked Friday night by reporters about the call, Trump said, 'We had a very good call, I think.' When asked about finding a way to end the fighting, Trump said: 'I don't know. I can't tell you whether or not that's going to happen.' The U.S. has paused some shipments of military aid to Ukraine, including crucial air defense missiles. Ukraine's main European backers are considering how they can help pick up the slack. Zelenskyy says plans are afoot to build up Ukraine's domestic arms industry, but scaling up will take time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Russia's Defense Ministry said it shot down 94 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday, along with 30 further drones on Saturday morning. No casualties were reported, but local officials in the Saratov region said 25 apartments were damaged by Ukrainian drones in the city of Engels.

As many as 14 people have died and search is on for 31 missing people, as cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides caused massive destruction in Mandi district on Tuesday. Please be rest assured that I stand with Himachal Pradesh in every situation." The post followed the ruling Congress' dig at the BJP over Ranaut's comment that she has not visited the cloudburst-affected areas of Mandi on the "advice" of state party leader and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur . Live Events In an earlier X post on Friday, Ranaut had said, "It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. I tried reaching the flood-affected areas in Seraj and other areas in Mandi, but was advised by the respected Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to wait until the connectivity to the affected areas is restored." On Thursday, Thakur had parried questions about the MP's absence from the calamity-hit region, saying, "We are concerned about the locals, we live and die for them. Cannot comment on those who are not." "Red alert is issued by Mandi DC today as well. Awaiting authorities' approval on the same; will be there as soonest possible," Ranaut had said after Thakur's comments. Latching on to the remark, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday jibed that Ranaut should speak to Thakur as the leader of the opposition was "getting angry".
