Brendan Rodgers has 2 immediate Celtic priorities to focus on instead of being distracted by contract talk

Celtic fans are getting worried with the boss heading into the final year of his Parkhead deal
Brendan Rodgers has been backed to keep his focus on keeping Celtic on top in Scotland while shooting for Europe despite uncertainty over his long-term future.
The Hoops boss is set to hold talks with Parkhead power broker Dermot Desmond over the summer as he heads into the final year of his contract.

But Celts hero Packie Bonner is convinced the Irishman won't allow any distractions as he aims to keep Rangers at bay and cracking the Champions League.

Bonner said: ' Brendan is an elite manager. His future doesn't get in the way for him. He's really focused on getting in the players he wants and preparing for that initial first game in Europe.
'And if he gets over that hurdle, gets the right players in, he'll be a happy, happy man. Has Rangers re-energised him? I hope so. I've always said that Celtic need competition.
'Last year was slightly different from a European context in that they did so well in the Champions League. I think the league format helped them. It was really good and I think we were all excited about that and the way that it was different.
"Now they have to build on that. But I think when you're in this league and you're trying to perform in Europe and you're trying to improve the team, you do need other people to challenge you and the players can learn from that.
'So there are no issues around that. I think he'll enjoy that, actually, if it happens.

'I'm just happy that he's there at this point in time because he's building the squad. It's not a big build, maybe two out, two or three in.
'Get up and get over this first qualification for Champions League again and then build on what they did last year and carry it on.

'Listen, last year was a fantastic year for them. Take away the Scottish Cup final, which was disappointing, they won a Double and they did so well in Europe. You wouldn't even think about anything.'
Rodgers had promised there is no way he'd jump ship before the end of his current deal and he hasn't ruled out an extension.
But Bonner insisted Celtic fans should just enjoy having the boss around right now.

He said: 'The most important thing for Brendan is that he's still here and he made it very clear last year when that discussion happened that he was here and he was going to be here.
"That's important. That's important for continuity and so on and so forth. But there will be a time when he leaves – just like everybody else.
'That's when the board and everybody else has got to do their homework long before maybe that situation occurs.

'But at this moment in time, I think the club, the board, the fans, the majority of them at this stage I would think, are very happy that he's there and he's guiding the ship and he's in charge.
'I'm just happy he's here. You're at a stage in this world where things happen. This is a strange world. It's not like the old days where you have somebody there for maybe four, five, six years, ten years, in some cases longer.
"But now it's about turning around the people. So as long as he's here and he says he's totally committed for next year."

I warned Rangers not to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst, reveals former owner Sir David Murray

It's one of a number of revelations from his major sitdown with the Scottish Sun SLIPPERY SLOPE I warned Rangers not to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst, reveals former owner Sir David Murray SIR DAVID MURRAY has revealed he told Rangers NOT to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst — and feels the Dutchman got a 'raw deal' at Ibrox. Van Bronckhorst, who was bought and sold as a player during Murray's Gers reign, led the team to the Europa League final and won the Scottish Cup three years ago. Now former owner Murray has told for the first time how he advised then chairman Douglas Park and his director son Graeme not to make the change. Speaking exclusively to SunSport, Murray said: 'I met the Parks at the time van Bronckhorst was coming to an end. 'I suggested that they stood still with van Bronckhorst and keep him. Advertisement "It seemed pointless to get rid of him. 'I don't want to seem smart after the event but the Beale exercise did not work and it cost a lot of money. 'There is van Bronckhorst now so highly rated that he's about to become the No 2 at Liverpool. 'He did reasonably well in Turkey and won the Super Cup with Besiktas. Advertisement 'He was one penalty kick from being up there with the greats. I think he got a raw deal. But it's not my decision. I'm only speaking as an observer now.' Van Brockhorst cost Gers £5million in the summer of 1998 and spent three years at Ibrox under countryman Dick Advocaat before an £8m move to Arsene Wenger's Arsenal. Sir Sean Connery's secret £1 MILLION investment in Rangers revealed When he returned as boss to succeed title-winning Steven Gerrard, he led Gers to the 2022 Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville. They lost on penalties after a nerve-shredding 1-1 draw and were denied just a second European trophy in the club's history. Advertisement They then beat Hearts at Hampden days later to lift to the Scottish Cup for the first time in 13 years. But a poor start to the next campaign prompted the board to axe van Bronckhorst, now linked with a job as Arne Slot's assistant at English Premier League champions Liverpool. Murray, who owned Gers for 23 years, believes the call was one of many decisions that didn't need to be made. He said: 'You had a dysfunctional board. Honestly, when you have directors putting in loans of £2m or £3m, everyone wants a say. Advertisement 'You can't run a football club by committee. 'Whether it's me or whoever, you need one dominant person to be making decisions. 'It's difficult because everything was done with good intentions. 'But it's just not been joined-up thinking. They've not been working as a team. Advertisement 'I looked at the directors' box sometimes and thought 'He's put in £2m, he's put in £5m'. It's like rotating who's putting the loans in. 'Some of the people will need their loans back.' Murray sold the club to Craig Whyte for £1 in May 2011. But Gers nosedived into administration and liquidation and plunged into the fourth tier of Scottish football. Advertisement 5 Douglas Park (left) with John Bennett Credit: Willie Vass The steel tycoon maintains those financial catastrophes were avoidable. Despite invitations, he has never returned to Ibrox since — and isn't sure he'll go back in the future. He revealed: 'I've been asked back but my life has moved on. Life has different stages. 'I was at Rangers for too long — 23 years was far too long. It was a huge part of my life. Advertisement 'Although people remember the difficulty at the end, which I accept, we had some great times as well. 'I've not been back to a game. Yes, I would go back. 'But there's nothing worse than the old guy going back to the place he ran before. It's time to move on. I've got a different life. 'The past is the past and, for me, it's time to move on.' Advertisement Writing in his new autobiography, Murray has apologised for selling Gers to Whyte. He cites the global financial collapse and personal health issues as contributory factors in the decision. 5 Former Rangers owner David Murray speaks to Roger Hannah at his Perthshire home Credit: Andrew Barr But he also believes the hardline stance of HMRC — which later softened — scared off other potential buyers and pushed him into the arms of Whyte. Advertisement He said: 'HMRC paralysed the club. Okay, I'm responsible, I'm in charge. 'But they put in fines and costs for running what they called an 'illegal' tax scheme. 'When we handed the club over, there was a £75m HMRC liability hanging over us. It became greater because Craig Whyte didn't pay the bills. 'But I find it so annoying that the final settled amount — after HMRC finally admitted it wasn't an illegal scheme — was £33m. Sir David Murray's Rangers mea culpa is 14 years too late but his other £10 gesture still makes me laugh today

I had a complex relationship with the former Ibrox chairman but something he did back in the day still makes me laugh The Murray mea culpa is 14 years too late. It's unable to undo the damage suffered by Rangers due to his decision to sell the club to a man of dubious character. But it's a terrific hook on which to hang on a new book, I'll give him that much. ‌ I had a complex relationship with Sir David Murray. ‌ In the good times, I was the one who got the quote from him about Celtic putting down a fiver and him putting down a tenner. It was a line I splashed all over this newspaper three decades ago. There were some awkward times with him too. One day, I picked up the sports desk telephone and, when he heard my voice, David said: 'Ah, my former friend.' End of conversation. The best part of his Ibrox legacy might be that he had complete faith in Walter Smith and let him take charge of the team when Graeme Souness left for Liverpool. It was the best thing Murray ever did for Rangers. The saddest part came on the day they took down the sign saying Murray Park at Rangers' training complex and started to call the place Auchenhowie instead. It was a move that symbolised a name being removed from a club's history. But I still laugh at the day when I was sitting in his office in Edinburgh and he called on his secretary to bring me in a bottle of wine to take home as a present. ‌ And he told her to make it a good one. Of course, I Googled the name on the bottle later on to see just how expensive it was. Then I could decide whether I could drink it or put it up on eBay. It cost ten pounds. Once again, Sir David had put down a tenner. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Ex-Celtic ace Scott Bain endures nightmare for Falkirk as he ships THREE goals in first half against lower league side

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HE left Celtic so he could give his son and wife-to-be the chance to watch him play regular first team football. But Scott Bain's family were hopefully absent from this afternoon's friendly between Falkirk and Edinburgh City as he endured a nightmare between the sticks. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Scott Bain is aiming to be Falkirk's No1 this season Credit: Kenny Ramsay Former Celtic goalkeeper Bain, 33, made his Falkirk debut in the Stirlingshire Cup last weekend and kept a clean sheet as the Bairns beat East Stirlingshire 2-0. That was his first outing in over a year after failing to make a single appearance in Brendan Rodgers' team last season. He did feature in pre-season against Queen's Park but his last competitive game for the Hoops came in the final game of the 2023/24 season against St Mirren - replacing Joe Hart in the dying moments of the contest. Bain has made it clear he hopes to change that this year in the Premiership with his new team and manager John McGlynn. But he didn't pain himself in the best light in latest appearance for the Bairns as he shipped THREE goals in one half against a Scottish League Two outfit. Falkirk hosted Edinburgh City and it finished 3-2 after a pretty end-to-end showdown, with the League Two side coming out on top - both in the first half and at full-time. The Bairns found themselves 3-0 down at the interval following an electric start from City. Tiwi Daramola netted a brace with James Stokes scoring as well to take a commanding lead at the break. It was a shock first half showing from the newly-promoted Premiership side after McGlynn named a very strong starting XI. Former Rangers star Scott Arfield started the game and pulled one back following the restart, with Sean Mackie the other goal-scorer for the hosts. Falkirk boss John McGlynn on his one remaining management dream and how his PLUMBING skills were put to use Speaking after sealing his move to Falkirk, Bain outlined his reasons for leaving his Celtic. He said: 'I think I was getting to the age now, where if I stayed on at Celtic for another year, as much as I loved being there and loved the club, I would have been another year older and it would have been harder to get back to playing regular football. 'A big thing for me was for my fiancé and little boy potentially getting the chance to come and watch me play, which will be a different experience for them than it's been for the last couple of years. 'So that was a big factor, as was getting the chance to come to Falkirk and work under the manager and the staff here. 'Seeing how well the club is run, was another big factor in me coming here.'
