"It is a rare honour": Harsh Vardhan Shringla expresses gratitude to President Murmu, PM Modi after being nominated for Rajya Sabha
Shringla thanked President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that it is a 'rare honour'. The former Indian foreign secretary noted that after serving in Government of India for 40 years, he went back to his 'grassroots' and began to work in the North Bengal area.
'I think it's a great responsibility and I want to extend my very grateful thanks to the President, Prime Minister for thinking of me in providing this opportunity to serve the people of the country through the great institution of our Parliament. I think it is a rare honour. After I completed approximately 40 years in the Government of India. I went back to my area which is the North Bengal area, Darjeeling area and I have been working at the grassroots levels', Shringla told ANI.
Shringla asserted that having a parliament seat will give him 'additional' basis to work and also gives him opportunity to articulate the views of people.
'Having a seat in Parliament gives me additional basis to be able to work. It provides me with a platform to be able to articulate the views of people of that area but also of any issue that is important for our country and contribute in any way that can serve the interests of the country and its people', Shringla added.
Shringla, known for his distinguished diplomatic career, was India's Ambassador to the United States and Bangladesh. He served as Foreign Secretary from January 2020 to April 2022.
Other than Harshvardhan Shringla, Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, veteran social worker C. Sadanandan Master and noted historian Meenakshi Jain were among the other people who were nominated by President of India for Rajya Sabha.
These individuals were nominated under the powers conferred by Article 80(1)(a) of the Constitution, read with clause (3) of the same article. These nominations come in the wake of vacancies created due to the retirement of previously nominated members.
The Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement through a notification.
These nominations fill the vacancies created by the retirement of previously nominated members and are seen as the government's acknowledgement of significant national contributions in the fields of law, diplomacy, social service, and historical scholarship. (ANI)

She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen. SC may hear plea on probe agencies summoning lawyers The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a suo motu case over the issue of investigation agencies summoning lawyers who offer opinions to parties and represent them in cases. A Bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria will hear the matter. The case comes in the wake of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning senior lawyers Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal. However, on June 20, the ED directed its investigating officers not to issue summons to any advocate in money laundering investigations being carried out against their clients, adding that an exception to this rule can only be made after 'approval' by the agency's director. President Murmu in Odisha President Droupadi Murmu will be on a two-day visit to Odisha from Monday, her office said in a statement. CHENNAI: DESCRIBING Tiruvalluvar as a revolutionary poet and a rebel who expressed rational views, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday said Tamils must strongly oppose any attempt to appropriate him. The CM was speaking after releasing the commentary of poet Vairamthu for Tirukkural. Former union finance minister P Chidambaram received the first copy. Charging that there are efforts to appropriate Tiruvalluvar and his ideas, Stalin said, just because there is no one among them to celebrate in the Aryan tradition, they are trying to steal Tiruvalluvar. "More than stealing, the truth is that they are attempting to deceive us. If they try to appropriate Tirukkural, the intensity of his ideas alone will scorch them," the CM added. Stating that even after 2,000 years, Tiruvalluvar's view that all beings are equal by birth remains just as necessary, Stalin said. "We must intensify efforts for making Tirukkural as India's national scripture. Further, a mega institution should be established in Delhi to propagate the greatness of Tirukkural. Also, we must engage ourselves in sowing the meaning of Tirukkural into Indian society," the CM said.

‘Padapooja' in schools: Practice is part of our culture, says Governor Rajendra Arlekar
However, Sivankutty refuted the governor's claims. 'Kerala doesn't have such a culture, and such practices will not go well here either,' he said, terming the practice cruel. 'It is saddening to see people in key positions like the governor making such remarks,' he said. 'I am not aware of any scripture in Indian culture which asks school students to wash the feet of BJP leaders,' the minister said, adding that such activity can be viewed as 'mental harassment' under Section 17(1) of the Right to Education Act. Condemning the practice, Govindan said that the RSS is trying to implement activities that were part of the old chaturvarnya system. The controversy was kicked off when photos and videos of children washing the feet of senior teachers as part of Guru Purnima celebrations surfaced from schools across the state. Sivankutty has asked the general education director to seek an explanation from the schools. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also taken a suo motu case on the issue, stating that all incidents in this category will fall under the same case.
