Saudi envoy gives travel documents to 30 Pakistanis invited as state guests for Umrah
Saudi Arabia's King Salman last year approved the hosting of 1,000 pilgrims from 66 countries to perform Umrah as part of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Program for Hajj, Umrah, and Visit. The pilgrims will be hosted in four groups during the current Islamic year, which ends in the final week of June 2025.
At a ceremony held in Islamabad, Malki expressed the Kingdom's 'deep commitment' to facilitate the pilgrims, underscoring the strong fraternal ties between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.
'These guests of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques will have the opportunity to perform Umrah with all necessary arrangements i.e. travel, lodging, and logistical support during their stay in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah under the supervision of the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance,' APP said.
The Pakistani beneficiaries of the program expressed gratitude to King Salman and the Saudi government for their hospitality.
The APP said thousands of Pakistani citizens have benefitted from similar programs over the years, reflecting the deep-rooted religious and historical ties between the two nations.
'This latest gesture reaffirms Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment to facilitating the spiritual journeys of Muslims worldwide, particularly those from Pakistan, a country with one of the largest contingents of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims annually,' the state-run media said.
Thousands of Pakistanis travel to Saudi Arabia every year to perform the voluntary Umrah pilgrimage, visiting holy Islamic places of worship in Makkah and Madinah.

Nearly 17 million foreign pilgrims perform Umrah in 2024, up 101% from 2022
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — A total of 18.5 million pilgrims from various parts of the world performed Hajj and Umrah during the year 2024. An overwhelming majority of these pilgrims, 16.92 million in number, came to perform Umrah, according to the statistical figures released by the Doyof Al-Rahman Program in its 2024 report. This figure of Umrah pilgrims exceeded the target for the last year, representing a growth rate of 101 percent compared to 2022. This reflects the integration of efforts and the smoothness of procedures, the program pointed out. In global index rankings, Makkah ranked fifth globally in terms of the number of international visitors, and Madinah jumped to seventh globally in the Tourism Performance Index, reflecting the Kingdom's leading position as a religious and tourist destination. "Doyof Al Rahman" is a program initiated by Saudi Arabia under the umbrella of Vision 2030, aiming to enhance the experience of pilgrims visiting Makkah and Madinah for Hajj and Umrah. The program focuses on streamlining services, improving infrastructure, and enriching the cultural and spiritual journey for pilgrims. The program explained that it is implementing 89 diverse initiatives in cooperation with more than 40 government agencies, achieving a 95 percent compliance rate. This is part of an integrated system covering all stages of the pilgrims' journey, from transportation and its facilities to performing rituals, all the way to enriching the cultural experience with visits to historical and archaeological sites. In terms of improving the visitor experience, the report indicated that Al-Rawdah Al-Sharif at the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah received more than 13 million visitors in 2024, compared to 4 million in 2022. Visitor satisfaction rates increased from 57 percent to 81 percent, indicating the development of the user experience and the quality of services provided. The number of volunteers serving the pilgrims reached more than 153,000 in 2024, exceeding the targets for the same year in a qualitative leap. In 2022, the number of volunteers did not exceed 15,000, confirming the growing community awareness and spirit of participation in serving the pilgrims. Internationally, 33 foreign visits, led by the program and with the participation of entities working in the pilgrimage service system from the public and private sectors such as airlines, and Hajj and Umrah service providers, have contributed to overcoming obstacles facing the arrival of pilgrims and visitors. These visits resulted in practical solutions that strengthened international cooperation in this field, removed many obstacles, and opened dozens of international destinations, helping to increase the seating capacity for transporting pilgrims and facilitate procedures. The program's efforts also included developing digital platforms. The Nusuk platform provides more than 100 services to users. The Makkah Route initiative has served more than 940,000 beneficiaries since its launch, and the Enaya centers have provided services to approximately 3 million beneficiaries. Hotel occupancy in Saudi Arabia rises to 63% as tourism workforce tops 983,000 in Q1 2025
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Saudi Arabia's hotel room occupancy rate rose to 63% in the first quarter of 2025, up 2.1 percentage points from the same period in 2024, according to the Tourism Establishments Statistics Publication released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT). In contrast, the occupancy rate for serviced apartments and other hospitality facilities dropped to 50.7%, down 3.8 percentage points compared to Q1 2024. The report also showed a mixed trend in room pricing. The average daily room rate in hotels fell by 3.4% year-on-year, reaching SR477, while serviced apartments and similar facilities saw an increase of 7.2%, bringing the average rate to SR209. Regarding guest behavior, the average length of stay in hotels during the fourth quarter of 2024 remained unchanged at 4.1 nights. However, the average stay in serviced apartments and other hospitality facilities decreased by 4.5% to 2.1 nights. Tourism employment saw a notable uptick, with 983,253 individuals working in tourism-related activities during Q1 of 2025, reflecting a 4.1% increase compared to the same quarter last year. Of the total, 243,369 were Saudi nationals, representing 24.8% of the workforce, while non-Saudis made up the remaining 75.2% with 739,884 employees. Men accounted for 86.8% of all workers in the tourism sector, totaling 853,852, while women represented 13.2% or 129,401 employees. The tourism sector comprised 5.4% of the total national workforce in Q1 of 2025, a slight decrease of 0.3 percentage points compared to Q1 of 2024. In the private sector, tourism employees made up 8.1% of the workforce, down 0.6 percentage points year-on-year.
