NEW DELHI: In a ringing endorsement that could change a young cricketer's life, former India head coach
Ravi Shastri
on Saturday lavished praise on 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, suggesting that the teenager may soon be fast-tracked into the senior national setup.
Suryavanshi turned heads with a record-smashing 143 off just 78 balls in the fourth Youth ODI against England U-19, propelling India to a commanding total of 363 for 9. His whirlwind innings featured 13 fours and 10 sixes and included a 52-ball century - the fastest in Youth ODI history, eclipsing Pakistan's Kamran Ghulam's 53-ball effort in 2013.

Speaking during commentary on Day 4 of the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, Shastri said, 'He [Suryavanshi] will play First-Class cricket, but that's what the IPL does.
It gives you that platform. The whole country sees you. And you catch the imagination of everyone.'

Do you believe Vaibhav Suryavanshi will make it to the senior national cricket team soon?
Yes, definitely
Possibly
Unlikely
No, he needs more time
Shastri was emphatic about what lies ahead: 'It will fast-track him if he goes and plays First-Class cricket, goes and gets a couple of hundreds in his first couple of seasons.'
'Siraj puts his heart on his sleeve': Morkel lauds pacers as India close in on win
The left-handed sensation from Samastipur, Bihar, is now the youngest ever centurion in Youth ODIs at 14 years and 100 days, surpassing Bangladesh's Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was 14 years and 241 days when he hit his hundred in 2013.
Suryavanshi also broke Sarfaraz Khan's Indian record, previously set at 15 years and 338 days.
Suryavanshi had already captured national attention earlier this year during the IPL, when he hammered a 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans — the fastest by an Indian in the league's history.
'He has already caught the eyes; already made it to the Under-19 team at the age of 14. Smacking it everywhere,' Shastri added. 'And it's tours like this to England, with this exposure - he can only improve.'
India U-19 lead the five-match Youth ODI series 3-1, with Suryavanshi now being viewed as a generational talent with a potentially fast-tracked road to
Indian cricket
stardom.

Sundar or Reddy: Whom will Bumrah replace in India XI for 3rd Test vs ENG?

As India gear up for the third Test of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground from July 10 to 14, all eyes are on the team selection, particularly on the all-rounder slot. With the series tied 1-1 after India's emphatic 336-run win at Edgbaston, the visitors are likely to make one tactical change in their playing XI. The big question is: Will Washington Sundar or Nitish Kumar Reddy make way for Shardul Thakur? India bounced back strongly in the second Test, levelling the series after England had drawn first blood in Leeds with a 5-wicket victory. Now, heading into the third Test at Lord's, often referred to as the Mecca of Cricket, team balance and pitch conditions will play a crucial role in shaping the final XI. Lord's pitch may prompt a pace-bowling All-rounder inclusion Recent behaviour of the Lord's pitch gives India some food for thought. While traditionally known to assist fast bowlers, especially early on, the pitch tends to flatten out and become more favourable for batting as the match progresses. In fact, in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final last month, South Africa chased down 282 against Australia in three sessions on the final day, highlighting how conditions ease up for batters later. This observation can lead to the Indian think tank considering replacing off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar with seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur in the next tie. Sundar contributed with both bat and ball in the previous Test, scoring 42 runs and taking the important wicket of Ben Stokes, but may lose his spot purely due to the dynamics of the pitch. Nitish Kumar Reddy's place also under scrutiny? Another player who may find himself on the bench is youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy. While the Andhra Pradesh all-rounder offers energy and versatility, he hasn't had many impactful moments with either bat or ball in the series so far, scoring just 1 run in 2 innings and bowling just 6 overs in the entirety of the Test. If India decide to go with Shardul to lengthen the pace attack without sacrificing batting depth, Nitish could be the one to miss out, depending on the team composition strategy. India's top order has been in stellar form. Shubman Gill leads the run tally with 585 runs, including three centuries. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have also been consistent, with each of them scoring over 200 runs in just two matches. With the top and middle order performing well, India can afford to tweak their all-rounder combination to suit conditions. England too had a decent run with the bat as both sides came together to produce the highest match aggregate in a Test match at Edgbaston, an impressive 1692 runs scored in the 2nd Test featuring 4 centurions in the match as well. Bumrah will join Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep in the pace unit, with Shardul possibly becoming the fifth seamer if selected. Probable playing 11 for India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy/Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep.

‘Asli kahaani toh yeh hai': Irfan Pathan explains why Akash Deep's wicket-taking delivery to Joe Root was not a no ball

There has been plenty of chatter about the ball from Akash Deep that sent Joe Root packing in the second India vs England Test at Edgbaston. Root was dismissed for just six runs with the game on the line. Root's dismissal meant that England were in dire straits, slumping to 50/3. That day, England were 72/3 at stumps of day 4, needing 536 runs to win. But India managed to level the series 1-1 with a 336-run victory. In the aftermath of England's defeat there was controversy brewing, at least in some sections of England media with claims that the ball should have been chalked off as a back-foot no-ball. But former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has ended the nontroversy with a breakdown video for broadcasters Sony Sports Network, explaining why the Akash Deep delivery was a legal one. The former India pacer explained that Akash Deep's first contact with the back foot was inside the crease with the heel landing outside. This is why it is not a no ball, as the first contact of the foot with the pitch is considered while deciding a back-foot no-ball. There were photos doing the rounds that show how Akash Deep's back foot crossed the line. But Pathan slowed down the clip from the run up and showed how Akash Deep's first contact with the pitch, with his toes, was well inside. And then his heel lands outside. 'There is a controversy being created by English media and then also on social media. It's been shown that the ball was a no ball. Lekin asli kahaani kya hai? (But what's the real story?) The real story starts a few frames before (the photo shared on social media). Contact point is what matters. If the contact point was on the line, then it would be a no ball. But because the contact point is inside, it is a legal delivery,' Pathan said. No Ball or Legal delivery? Irfan Pathan clears it up on #SchoolOfCricket 📹🏏#SonySportsNetwork #GroundTumharaJeetHamari #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia #ExtraaaInnings — Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) July 6, 2025 'That's why it's not a no ball. Legally he's taken a good wicket. Skillfully, he taken the wicket,' Pathan had explained. Commentator Alison Mitchell, speaking on BBC's Test Match Special, said: 'The delivery from Akash Deep — which we said was wide off the crease — his foot on the back crease is out. Looks like by about two inches. Maybe a little bit more. But comfortably. So his back foot, which needs to land within the line, just taps about two inches over the line. Not picked up!' There are essentially two creases: the popping crease, which is the white line that runs perpendicular to the pitch. Then there are shorter lines next to the stumps that run parallel to the pitch. These lines are the return creases. According to the MCC's laws of the game (law 21.5), 'For a delivery to be fair in respect of the feet, in the delivery stride (21.5.1) the bowler's back foot must land within and not touching the return crease appertaining to his/her stated mode of delivery. (21.5.2) the bowler's front foot must land with some part of the foot, whether grounded or raised – on the same side of the imaginary line joining the two middle stumps as the return crease described in 21.5.1, and – behind the popping crease.'

‘Rohit Sharma's anger is more dangerous than Virat Kohli's,' says Yuzvendra Chahal; Rishabh Pant recalls being called ‘stupid' by Sunil Gavaskar

The behind-the-scenes clips of The Great Indian Kapil Show are as fun and hilarious as the show itself. Recently, cricketers Rishabh Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Abhishek Sharma, along with their coach and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, appeared on the show. The latest behind-the-scenes clip, which Kapil shared on his YouTube channel, showed the cricketers discussing whose anger is more dangerous — Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. Chahal named Rohit Sharma's anger as the more dangerous of the two. During the same segment, Chahal was asked what's more difficult to predict — the ball thrown by a bowler or a girlfriend's mood. The cricketer answered that it is more difficult to predict a ball thrown by a bowler. When Kapil showed surprise at Chahal's answer, Chahal politely asked him to move on to the next question. Immediately, Navjot Singh Sidhu said, 'This means he is an expert in other things more than cricket.' Rishabh, however, countered that the expert in this case is Kapil Sharma and not Chahal. Kapil, however, dismissed the claim with a joke. For the unversed, Yuzvendra Chahal was married to actor and social media influencer Dhanashree Verma. They parted ways this year after five years of marriage. The two had tied the knot in 2020. Chahal is currently rumoured to be dating RJ Mahvash and has been spotted with her on many occasions. During the segment, Sidhu also recalled the incident when Sunil Gavaskar had called Rishabh Pant 'stupid, stupid, stupid' for getting out at a crucial point in a match. However, Pant turned that moment into an opportunity and was later seen saying Gavaskar's lines — 'stupid, stupid, stupid' — in an advertisement which he shot with Gavaskar himself. Talking about the same, Rishabh said, 'We were just sharing love.' Taking advantage of the situation, Sidhu took a jibe at Gautam Gambhir jokingly and said, 'Gautam also doesn't get involved in small fights, he take on big fights.' However, when Kapil asked him to elaborate, Sidhu refused to talk further. In the past, Gautam Gambhir has had various confrontations with cricketers, including Shahid Afridi and Kamran Akmal. His most recent spat was with Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. Meanwhile, Gambhir too took his chance to get back at Sidhu. When Kapil asked him what he likes more about Sidhu – his cricket commentary or his shayaris? The cricketer without hesitation said, 'his shayaris.'
