Drinkers tried to save man after he was stabbed to death outside Wetherspoons
The victim, 26, was attacked opposite the King's Ford Wetherspoon in Chingford Mount at around 9pm on Sunday evening.
Staff raced out of the pub with a defibrillator in an effort to save him, locals said.
A restaurant worker who was passing just moments after the incident described the 'horrific' scenes as the victim lay dying.
The witness, 28, told Metro: 'There was panic and distress. There were people from the pub with a defibrillator trying to save the man. There was a crowd forming of people from the pub I guess and then the police and ambulances showed up. The people from the pub were heroes. They did their best.'
Another witness who had been in the pin told Metro: 'There was shouting outside and people including staff ran out. When it comes down time it people want to help. The bloke who died is a known face. He's a decent person, no bother.'
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 9.11pm on Sunday 6 July to reports of a stabbing on Chingford Mount Road, E4.
'We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance.
'Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.'
The man died at the scene and a manhunt by murder squad detectives is underway. More Trending
A blue and white crime scene tent marks the spot where the man lay fatally injured.
Forensics officers are trawling for clues and the road remains cordoned off.
Detectives are collecting CCTV footage and carrying out door to door inquiries as part of the investigation.

BBC true crime series unveils 'Bad Nanny' who scammed vulnerable families
Serial con-artist Samantha Cookes assumed multiple identities and made up wild stories. BBC's documentary tonight sheds a light on the true crime case Like an evil Mary Poppins, serial con-artist Samantha Cookes posed as a nanny and scammed families with disabled children - even taking their money for a fake trip to Lapland. Gripping two-parter Bad Nanny (Tues 8th July, BBC1, 10.45pm) rakes over all the shocking details of this true crime case, that saw Cookes assume multiple identities, including a child therapist, an arts teacher and a surrogate mother, to con families in the UK and Ireland between 2011 and 2024. She even posed on TikTok as Carrie Jade Williams, a terminally ill woman and disability activist, winning the sympathy and support of thousands. But when one of her posts went viral, some followers became suspicious and began to dig, discovering her real name was Samantha Cookes, a fraud with multiple aliases and a troubling history. Speaking for the first time, Katie and Luke in North Yorkshire describe how she posed as a surrogate mother, defrauding them of their savings. Mother-of-three Layla describes how she believed she was hiring 'Lucy Hart', a Mary Poppins-like au pair at their home in County Offaly. When Layla became suspicious, 'Lucy' vanished, leaving an ominous note that left Layla fearing for her children. Terrifying moment war zone-like mass shooting leaves three dead in Philadelphia
A mass shooting that broke out in Philadelphia and left three people dead and 10 injured appeared like a scene out of a war zone. CCTV footage from outside a home showed more than a half dozen people taking cover behind a short wall on the porch as countless gunshots rang out. The 20-second Ring camera clip showed women and teenagers taking cover on top of each other and squirming while at least two men stood up with guns and opened fire toward the street. Others could be seen hiding behind cars across the street. Gunfire erupted on the 1500 block of South Etting Street in the Grays Ferry neighborhood just before 1am on Monday. Police were patrolling the area as people gathered and played loud music, when dozens of shots were fired. Three men, aged 19, 23 and 24, were killed in the massacre. Among those who were injured were a 15-year-old girl, two 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man in critical condition. Other victims aged 18 to 24 suffered more minor injuries. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel condemned the perpetrators for engaging in the shootout with children nearby, and said it was 'hard to understand'. 'You see the size of this block – individuals just shooting randomly into houses, into cars,' said Bethel, according to WPVI. 'I mean, this is coward, wannabe thug stuff.' He added that 'we will get to the root cause and we will bring those individuals to justice'. Police have apprehended at least one person with a weapon. The shooting was 'past frustrating' for Tyrique Glasgow, who is executive director of Young Chances Foundation, which works to end violence and give young men opportunities in Grays Ferry. Glasgow said he knows some of the victims. More Trending 'They are working to get jobs and going to vocational school, and to have their lives stopped by gun violence is something that is frustrating and painful,' he told the news outlet. The shooting happened during a community cookout. 'We are going to come together and clean it up, but the blood and the trash and the food and the activities that we are supposed to have today for our summer camp, we had to put on pause today,' Glasgow said.
