UK secretly resettled 4,500 Afghans in Britain after huge data exposure: Report
LONDON: Britain set up a secret scheme to relocate thousands of Afghans to the UK after a soldier accidentally disclosed the personal details of more than 33,000 people, putting them at risk of reprisals from the Taliban, court documents showed on Tuesday.
A judge at London's high court said in a May 2024 judgment first made public Tuesday that about 20,000 people may have to be offered relocation to Britain, a move that would likely cost 'several billion pounds'.
Britain's current defence minister John Healey said that around 4,500 affected people 'are in Britain or in transit ... at a cost of around 400 million pounds'.
The government is also facing lawsuits from those affected by the breach.
A ministry of defence-commissioned review of the breach, a summary of which was also published Tuesday, said more than 16,000 affected people had been relocated to the UK as of May this year.
The government was forced to act after the breach revealed the names of Afghans who had helped British forces in Afghanistan before they withdrew from the country in chaotic circumstances in 2021. The details emerged on Tuesday after a legal ruling known as a superinjunction was lifted.

The injunction had been granted in 2023 after the MoD argued a public disclosure of the breach could put people at risk of extra-judicial killing or serious violence by the Taliban.
The dataset contained personal information of nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to be relocated to Britain and their families. It was released in error in early 2022, before the MoD spotted the breach in Aug 2023, when part of the dataset was published on Facebook.
The former Conservative government obtained the injunction the following month.

Cabinet clears budget scheme of Rs 24,000 crore for 100 agricultural districts
Representative image NEW DELHI: Aiming to fast-track development of agriculture and allied sectors in 100 under-performing districts in the country, Cabinet Wednesday approved 'PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' with an annual outlay of Rs 24,000 crore for six years beginning 2025-26. The scheme, announced in the Budget, is expected to benefit about 1.7 crore farmers. The scheme aims to enhance productivity, increase adoption of crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices, augment post-harvest storage infrastructure at the panchayat and block levels, improve irrigation facilities and facilitate availability of long- and short-term credit. "Today is a significant day for country's agricultural sector. Cabinet today approved the 'Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana'," home minister Amit Shah posted on X. With 100 agri-districts being selected across the country for promotion of scientific and modern agriculture, the initiative will make farming profitable, farmers self-reliant, & villages prosperous, he added. It will be implemented through convergence of 36 existing schemes across 11 departments, other state schemes and local partnerships with the private sector, Union I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, briefing reporters on the decision. As per an official statement, the number of districts in each state/UT will be based on share of net cropped area and operational holdings. However, a minimum of one district will be selected from each state. District plans will be aligned to the national goals of crop diversification, conservation of water and soil health, self-sufficiency in agriculture and allied sectors, as well as expansion of natural and organic farming. "Progress of the scheme in each Dhan-Dhaanya district will be monitored on 117 key performance indicators through a dashboard, on a monthly basis," said the statement.

Krishna water tribunal gets a year's extension from August 1
Representative image NEW DELHI: Days after granting an extension to Ravi and Beas Waters Tribunal, the country's oldest water disputes tribunal, the Centre has extended the tenure of Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal as well. Constituted in April 2004 to adjudicate the river water-sharing dispute among Maharashtra, Karnataka and erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Krishna tribunal has got an extension of another year, with effect from August 1. Krishna tribunal is one of the four active river-water tribunals in India, which have got extensions year after year, as they haven't managed to come up with an acceptable decision despite their extended tenures. "The said tribunals were constituted to adjudicate disputes between two or more states and therefore need to work towards early resolution, particularly since such disputes involve public interest and public welfare.
