Join Ladles of Love this Mandela Day: a call to action for South Africa's youth

IOL News10 hours ago
As the school holidays draw to a close, while many teens are still tucked behind screens or deep into gaming marathons, Ladles of Love is urging South Africa's youth to do something different this Mandela Day: 'Log off your games and social feeds, and show up to help your country.'
The call is clear. This Mandela Day, on 18 July, young people are invited to step into Nelson Mandela's powerful legacy by giving their time to help small children in need. Ladles of Love is pulling out all the stops this year with two large-scale volunteer events hosted at DHL Stadium in Cape Town and Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg.
These gatherings aren't just about ticking off community service hours. They're about showing young people that their time matters and that giving back is something to be proud of. Parents are encouraged to get involved too and to guide their children toward something meaningful and hands-on.
'Calling all parents and scholars who are looking for somewhere, and something meaningful to do for your 'Community Service' come and join us at our Mandela Day Events. You can do 8 hours of official volunteering with us and have fun doing good for good.'

67hrs in a cage! Join Dominique in making a difference this Mandela Day

Mandela Day is around the corner, and Belly2Brain's founder, Dominique Tibbles, is preparing to be locked in a cage once again for 67 hours. Dominique will be doing this from July 15 to 18 to raise funds and feed 17 000 people. 'For many of us, a peanut butter and jam sandwich is a snack, but for others, it may be their only meal for the day,' she said last year. The initiative is called Change2Uncage, and she will be locked up at Cradlestone Mall's Entrance 5, and over the three days, there will be activities for residents, including: • Self-defence classes on July 16 • Paint night on July 17 • Mandela Day sandwich making on July 18 She is calling on the community to support this initiative, and they need as many hands as possible to help them prepare the sandwiches on the last day from 08:00. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

She further emphasised the significance of civic involvement, saying, 'We need young South Africans to realise that giving back isn't optional—it's vital, as when you give your time, you're helping to build the South Africa you want to live in.' Each ticket comes with a personalised official document for community service records. Scholars, students, and families are encouraged to sign up together, creating a day filled with shared purpose and human connection, far removed from screens and digital distractions. 'Parents are urged to bring their kids for a fun-filled day that teaches empathy, responsibility, and gratitude,' Jones noted.
