Lorry crash spills nitric acid, calcium hypochlorite on Sabak Bernam road
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they dispatched personnel to the scene after being informed of the incident at 7.01pm.
He said the lorry was involved in an accident with another truck.
'Inspection found a spill involving 40 drums of 68 per cent nitric acid and 24 drums of 70 per cent calcium hypochlorite.
'There was one male victim, the lorry driver, but he did not sustain any injuries,' he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Mukhlis said the chemical residue was cleaned up by the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Unit, with the operation fully completed at 2.42am today.
He added that the operation involved 24 personnel and officers from the Sabak Bernam and Sungai Besar Fire and Rescue Stations, with assistance from the Hazmat team from the Rawang station. — Bernama

Four Form One boys nabbed over alleged Kajang mall assault on classmate
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Four Form One students were arrested yesterday for allegedly assaulting a classmate at a shopping mall in Kajang the day before, Berita Harian reported. Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said police received a report from the 13-year-old victim at 12.57pm yesterday. The boy alleged he was punched and slapped by schoolmates who were still in uniform at the time of the incident. 'Investigations showed the incident took place at 11am the day before, when the complainant and several schoolmates went to the mall. 'He was called aside to discuss grievances his classmates had with him, before he was physically assaulted,' Naazron was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. The victim sought treatment at a nearby hospital and was found to have sustained minor facial injuries. According to Berita Harian, a video of the incident that has since gone viral shows the victim being beaten by two students, while two others filmed the episode using their mobile phones. Police arrested the four 13-year-old boys at about 8.35pm in the Bandar Kajang area. A two-day remand was granted until tomorrow to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. It is also being probed under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which carries a fine of up to RM100 upon conviction. Police view the incident seriously and have urged students to adhere to school rules and avoid behaviour that could jeopardise their future. Family awarded RM194K after man hangs himself in agency's lockup
The Shah Alam High Court awarded the widow and father of M Thinagaran RM172,800 for loss of earnings, special damages (RM6,370) funeral expenses (RM5,000), bereavement (RM10,000) and costs (RM30,000). SHAH ALAM : The family of a former security guard who died by suicide while in the custody of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has been awarded approximately RM194,000 in damages following a successful negligence claim. Justice Alice Loke, in a 25-page judgment released on Monday, held that the defendants —the Selangor maritime director, an MMEA investigating officer, and the government had failed to exercise reasonable care in preventing the death of 31-year-old M Thinagaran. 'There is a clear breach of duty when the deceased was with an extra pair of pants in the presence of a grill in the lock up and where the risk of suicide is not unforeseeable with detainees,' she said. Loke said there had been inadequate monitoring which, if carried out, could have prevented the fatal incident. 'the defendants were under a duty of care to ensure the deceased came to no harm whilst in their custody,' she said, concluding that the negligence flowed directly from their breach and did not constitute an independent intervening act. The deceased's widow, R Tenaswari, and father, K Madhavan—joint administrators of Thinagaran's estate—had sued the defendants on grounds of negligence, breach of statutory duty and misfeasance in public office. Loke, however, only allowed the negligence claim, finding insufficient evidence to support the remaining allegations. The judge awarded damages of RM172,800 for loss of earnings, RM6,370 as special damages, RM5,000 for funeral expenses, and RM10,000 for bereavement. The government was also ordered to pay the plaintiffs RM30,000 in costs. The facts of the case revealed that on Jan 9, 2019, MMEA officers, acting on intelligence, intercepted a suspicious vessel off the Selangor coast. They found Thinagaran and another individual, R Inthiran, on board. A search also uncovered packages later confirmed to contain drugs. Both men were remanded for investigation and detained at the maritime enforcement office in Klang. Thinagaran had been sent to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital earlier that day for treatment. He was diagnosed with a stress-related headache and prescribed medication. He was found dead four days later—hanging from the ceiling of his cell using a pair of pants provided to him while in custody. Closed-circuit footage captured key moments leading up to his death. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as hanging. Counsel Manoharan Malayalam, P Subramaniam and Sarathbala Balakrishnan appeared for the plaintiffs. Senior federal counsel Siti Syakimah Ibrahim and federal counsel Nuurzul Izzati Zulkipli represented the government. Manoharan confirmed that the government has filed an appeal against both liability and quantum. Meanwhile, the plaintiffs are pursuing a cross-appeal for higher compensation, he said.

Decomposed body with hands, feet tied found near Hulu Selangor rail tracks
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The body of a man with his hands and feet bound was discovered today near the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway tracks in Kampung Sungai Serian, Kalumpang, Berita Harian reported. The unidentified body, which was already decomposing, was found lying on its back at the scene, according to the Malay daily. Citing a source, Berita Harian said police received information about the discovery at around 10.30am. 'A team from the Hulu Selangor District Police Headquarters (IPD) was immediately dispatched to the location. 'A forensic team was also deployed to conduct investigations,' the source was quoted as saying. It is understood the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, and efforts are ongoing to identify the victim, Berita Harian reported. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed the discovery when contacted. 'The Hulu Selangor District Police Chief will issue a media statement regarding the case,' he said, according to Berita Harian.
