Lorry overturns on Kesas Highway, causing chemical spill

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the driver of the Shah Alam-bound lorry sustained minor injuries. "One victim, the lorry driver, was rescued by members of the public and sustained only minor injuries,' he said in a statement. Ahmad Mukhlis said firefighters at the scene were waiting for a contractor to upright and move the container lorry to the roadside to allow chemical cleanup operations to begin. Lorry crash spills nitric acid, calcium hypochlorite on Sabak Bernam road
SHAH ALAM, July 11 — Sixty-four drums of nitric acid and calcium hypochlorite spilled onto the road after a lorry carrying the chemicals collided with another vehicle along Jalan Besar Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar, near here yesterday. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they dispatched personnel to the scene after being informed of the incident at 7.01pm. He said the lorry was involved in an accident with another truck. 'Inspection found a spill involving 40 drums of 68 per cent nitric acid and 24 drums of 70 per cent calcium hypochlorite. 'There was one male victim, the lorry driver, but he did not sustain any injuries,' he said in a statement today. Ahmad Mukhlis said the chemical residue was cleaned up by the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Unit, with the operation fully completed at 2.42am today. He added that the operation involved 24 personnel and officers from the Sabak Bernam and Sungai Besar Fire and Rescue Stations, with assistance from the Hazmat team from the Rawang station. — Bernama

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the 40-year-old male victim sustained only minor injuries. "The victim's car rear-ended the lorry on a 25-foot-high (7.62 metres) bridge, landing him in a mangrove swamp," he said in a statement. He said that six personnel from the Pulau Indah Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 2.14am. He said the driver of the Perodua Aruz car is believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. Ahmad Mukhlis said the victim, who was rescued at 4.12am, was handed over to the Ministry of Health for further action. - BERNAMA

Shop, six cars damaged as carbide stored in fruit shop explodes
SHAH ALAM: A fruit shop was severely damaged after carbide (calcium carbide) used to accelerate the ripening process of fruits suddenly exploded in an incident in Bandar Baru Klang, near here today. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they received a call at 5:21 pm before deploying eight officers and personnel from the North Klang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) along with a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) to the scene. 'Upon arrival at the location, it was confirmed that an explosion had occurred at the back of a fruit shop measuring 7,000 square feet. 'The impact of the explosion caused the collapse of the office wall structure of the shop, which measured 900 square feet,' he said in a statement today. Ahmad Mukhlis said the impact of the explosion also caused damage to six cars parked in the vicinity. However, no casualties were involved in the incident, he said.
