Intense battle lies ahead for Merotai
KOTA KINABALU (June 22): The Merotai State Assembly seat is considered one of the 'hot' seats attracting attention in the 17th Sabah State Election due to the emergence of a prominent figure rumored to contest in this stronghold of the Warisan party.
Merotai has gained attention of late as a secretary-general of a ministry from the Madani government is said to be on the list of potential candidates that PKR, a member of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, is expected to promote, which has gone viral on social media.
In a list described by some PH supporters as 'fake news', the local from Tawau, Datuk Ruji Ubi, the secretary-general of the Ministry of Unity, is rumored to be the candidate against the incumbent Merotai representative, Sarifuddin Hata, from Warisan.
According to several local political observers, if the viral predictions are accurate, it could be part of PKR or PH's strategy to gain support and trust, especially among the people in the eastern part of Sabah.
'It is going to be a tough fight and interesting,' they said.
However, Ruji, in his latest social media post, did not provide any indication or comment regarding this possibility, simply stating:
'For your information, starting today (June 21, 2025), I have retired. I chose to retire early at the age of 55. I want to return to Tawau to 'farm',' Ruji said in jest.
Ruji, who is a former chief executive officer of the Eastern Sabah Security Command, made this statement in response to a question from a netizen about whether he might enter politics after announcing his retirement from public service.
Before his last appointment, Ruji also served as the secretary-general of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education.
In the 2020 state election, Sarifuddin won the Merotai seat with a majority of 1,587 votes

GRS must lead Sabah's political direction, says Joniston
Joniston KIULU (Aug 1): It is crucial for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to be dominant and control the political narratives in Sabah in any form of pact with national-based parties, said its information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. He said this would be in line with the sentiment and aspirations of the majority of Sabahans who have publicly expressed support for a local-led coalition to spearhead the state's future. 'We must not ignore the voices of the people as the growing sentiment for local-based parties to take the lead is real and must be respected, but in addressing this, we must also act with wisdom and foresight,' he said at a meeting with Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) grassroot leaders here. Joniston, who also serves as PBS information chief, stressed that any political decisions made must be guided by Sabah's long-term interests rather than emotions or external pressure. He said that while GRS has worked well with federal partners such as PH, moving forward, any form of cooperation must be anchored on a clear and binding commitment to Sabah's rights. This, he said, is in particular, the long-standing demand for the return of 40 per cent net revenue collected by the federal government from the state. 'If there is to be any continued cooperation, it must come with formal assurances. Sabah's rights must be respected and delivered, not just talked about during elections,' said the Kiulu assemblyman. Joniston also said negotiations on seat allocations must be based on fair discussions that reflect the strength and support of Sabah-based parties. He stressed that while GRS continues to lead the state government in cooperation with PH, any future collaboration must align with the aspirations of the Sabah people and uphold mutual respect. 'We value our cooperation with our partners at the national level, but Sabahans must be in the driver's seat in shaping the future of the state. 'It's about striking the right balance between unity and autonomy. Even now, GRS is leading the State government, working with PH based on shared understanding. 'What we must avoid, however, is making decisions that risk losing the people's trust, such as entertaining alliances with parties that once disrupted the state government's stability,' he said. Reflecting on the PBS political journey, Joniston said past experiences have shaped the party's approach to remain firm in defending Sabah's rights while maintaining constructive relations with the federal government. He noted that although PBS was known for its strong stance in fighting for State rights during its nine years in power from 1985 to 1994, the current political environment calls for a more strategic and united way of working within GRS and in engagements with Putrajaya.

New PKR appointees ‘on same page' as leadership, says analyst

PETALING JAYA : An analyst says the appointment of PKR's new strategic director and several state chiefs is aimed at facilitating the party's workflow, as they are more aligned with the top leadership. Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia cited the appointments of PKR strategic director Sim Tze Tzin, replacing Akmal Nasir, as well as Dr Zaliha Mustafa as Johor PKR chief, taking over from Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh. Akmal and Syed Ibrahim were running mates with Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli in the PKR elections in May, which saw Rafizi losing the party's deputy presidency. 'Syed Ibrahim also attended Rafizi's press conference on the judicial appointments issue. 'So this new line-up of leaders could be said to be more on the same page with the top leadership of the party,' Mazlan told FMT. Other appointments announced yesterday included Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's senior political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, as Melaka PKR chief, and Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, another political aide to Anwar, taking over as Pahang PKR head. Tawfik Yaakub of Universiti Malaya said the changes were a normal matter for any party after undergoing internal elections. He said such steps were necessary to revamp and strengthen the party, especially ahead of a series of elections, starting with the Sabah polls this year and eventually the 16th general election in several years' time. Also due in the coming years are the Sarawak, Melaka, and Johor state elections. Tawfik said Sim's appointment could help PKR formulate holistic strategies for the polls, not only focusing on Malay support but also giving non-Malay leaders a bigger role. He added that Shamsul and Farhan's appointments were unsurprising given their government positions. 'This can ease communications from the PKR president (Anwar) to the state chiefs,' he said.
