Kedah Sultan calls on successful Kedahans to give back to the state
ALOR SETAR: The Sultan of Kedah Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has called on successful Kedah-born individuals to give back and contribute to the state.
His Royal Highness said they could contribute in various forms, including tithes, charity, endowments, investments, professional expertise, and social initiatives, all aimed at advancing Kedah's development.
'I believe that if every successful Kedah native gives back to the state, Kedah will continue to prosper, remain competitive, and command respect.
'This is the Kedah Sejahtera spirit, which is not a mere slogan but a shared commitment,' His Royal Highness said during the investiture ceremony of state awards, medals, and honours in conjunction with the Kedah Ruler's 83rd birthday celebration at Istana Anak Bukit, here today.
Sultan Sallehuddin emphasised that the success of individuals should not be celebrated and enjoyed only on a personal level; instead, it should be regarded as a trust and responsibility to give back to the state.
Sultan Sallehuddin also expressed gratitude for Kedah's strong investment performance, which continues to show growth, reflecting investors' confidence in the state's potential as a competitive and stable investment destination.
However, His Royal Highness stressed that the state's economic growth must be holistic, inclusive, and bring direct benefits to the people.
'I wish to see strategic focus on high-impact sectors that not only generate skilled employment opportunities but also create significant economic spillover effects for the state,' the Ruler said.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sallehuddin also raised concerns over the spread of deviant teachings and ideologies that pose a threat to security, urging the Kedah State Islamic Religious Council, mosques, surau, and religious schools to play a more active role in curbing deviant teachings, misguided ideologies, and radical influences, firmly yet full of wisdom.
'The role of recognised and certified religious scholars, imams, and preachers is crucial in guiding the community.
'I wish to remind everyone that any religious interpretation, sermon or preaching must be accurate to avoid confusion or division with the community,' Sultan Sallehuddin emphasised.
The Sultanah of Kedah Sultanah Maliha Tengku Ariff, Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah, and Tunku Mahkota of Kedah Tunku Shazuddin Ariff were also in attendance.
Also present were Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, State Secretary Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali, and members of the state executive council.

TANGKAK, June 29 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest the Sabah state election as a solid team, said its Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. 'For the Sabah state election, the sentiment study has been completed and we leave it to the leadership to disclose the findings,' she said when met after officiating the Kepala Batas Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri Division Delegates' Meeting at Kubang Menerung in Kepala Batas. Noraini, who is also Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, said for the Sabah polls, Wanita Umno is moving in step with the state Umno to ensure the election machinery is always at peak readiness. She said Umno has a well-organised structure with task distribution among the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings to ensure all operations run smoothly and with focus. 'In fact, each wing – Wanita, Youth and Puteri – has its own specific role, but the real strength comes from coordination and teamwork,' she said. Baling anti-flood plan ramps up as RM22.8m Sabo Dam nears 62pc completion, 17 new homes for victims ready by July
BALING, June 29 — The RM22.80 million Sabo Dam in Sungai Kupang near here is expected to be completed ahead of schedule, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. The dam, which is currently at 62 per cent progress as opposed to the scheduled 20 per cent, will reduce the risk of debris flows that threaten the safety of the 5,000 residents in Baling Town, he added. 'Contractors have given assurances that the project will be completed two months ahead of the original schedule, at the end of next year... it's rare that such a project develops at such a pace,' he told reporters after visiting the project site in his capacity of Kedah state development action council joint chairman near here today. He also shared that the flood mitigation plan in Baling district was at 12 per cent development for Phase 1 and 3.68 per cent for Phase 2 so far, with Phase 1, costing RM9.6 million, expected to be completed in November next year and Phase 2, costing RM118 million, expected to be completed in January 2029. The flood mitigation projects were of utmost importance to the people in Baling as they faced frequent flooding previously, he said. 'In 2024, Baling was hit by 17 incidents of floods... in 2023 only 10 times... according to data from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage,' he said, pointing out that the flood mitigation plan was part of the Federal Government's efforts to tackle the flooding issue in the district. Saifuddin Nasution also visited the location where 17 replacement houses and facilities are being built for victims of the debris flow that hit Kampung Iboi on July 4, 2022. The project, costing RM3 million, is 95 per cent complete, with only the preparation of utilities for the houses remaining, he added. 'It is expected to be done by the third week of July and when it is settled, we will hand the houses to those affected,' he said. — Bernama

Pope Leo laments 'diabolical intensity' of Middle East conflicts
VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo said on Thursday that conflicts in the Middle East were raging with an unprecedented "diabolical intensity" and appealed for greater respect for international law, in comments to Catholic bishops and aid agencies operating in the region. At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being "devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic." "Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown," he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was "tragic and inhumane." Leo, elected on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, appealed last month for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. He did not name Israel in his remarks today (June 26). The US-born pope also did not directly address the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran that also saw the United States bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities but he called for countries to show better respect for international law.
