Mohamad Hasan: BN set for solid team approach in Sabah polls, eyes PH cooperation and local partnerships
TANGKAK, June 29 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest the Sabah state election as a solid team, said its Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad, who is also Umno Deputy President, said the coalition is currently exploring cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) as well as understandings with local parties in Sabah in preparation for the upcoming state polls.
'We are exploring cooperation with PH in Sabah because BN cannot go it alone there, so we need partners to face the state election. We are still considering various aspects, especially seat distribution.
'We don't want confusion. We want to be a strong team, so that voters are not confused and will give their support to strong parties that can govern Sabah,' he said.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Umno Ledang Division Delegates' Meeting, which was also attended by Umno Ledang Division chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Talib at Dewan Putra Padang Lerek here today.
Meanwhile, in KEDAH, Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said the wing is conducting a detailed sentiment study to understand voter trends and grassroots feedback, which will be channelled directly to central, division and 'war room' leaderships.
She said the sentiment analysis is being conducted continuously across the country to strengthen the party, and not just for elections.
'For the Sabah state election, the sentiment study has been completed and we leave it to the leadership to disclose the findings,' she said when met after officiating the Kepala Batas Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri Division Delegates' Meeting at Kubang Menerung in Kepala Batas.
Noraini, who is also Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, said for the Sabah polls, Wanita Umno is moving in step with the state Umno to ensure the election machinery is always at peak readiness.
She said Umno has a well-organised structure with task distribution among the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings to ensure all operations run smoothly and with focus.
'In fact, each wing – Wanita, Youth and Puteri – has its own specific role, but the real strength comes from coordination and teamwork,' she said.
The five-year term of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly is set to dissolve automatically on November 11, paving the way for the 17th Sabah State Election to be held. — Bernama

KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Two assemblyman pleaded not guilty in court today for receiving bribes from businessman Datuk Albert Tei amounting to RM350,000 in total for assistance in getting approval for a mineral prospecting licence in Sabah. Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Yusof Yacob was accused of receiving RM200,000 in cash from Tei on March 6, 2023 at the rooftop restaurant in Hilton hotel at around 2pm in exchange for help in the application and approval process for a mineral prospecting licence for Syarikat Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd in Sabah. Tanjung Batu assemblyman and Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy was charged with receiving RM150,000 cash from Tei on May 12, 2023 at 11pm in front of his residence along Jalan Pantai, Sembulan, similarly in exchange for help to apply and approve the mineral prospecting licence for another company, Syarikat Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd, in Sabah. Both are Sabah-based companies where Tei is a partner. Tei, 37, was also charged and pleaded not guilty to offering the bribes. Special Corruption Court Judge Jason Juga set August 5 for pretrial case management of all three men. Bail for the two assemblymen was set at RM50,000 with RM10,000 fully deposited today with a local surety; hey were also asked to surrender his passport. Bail for Tei was set at RM60,000 for both charges with RM15,000 to be deposited today and surrender his passport. They were all also asked to check in with the nearest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once every two months until the case is over. The charges against Andi and Yusof were under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes while Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes. No automatic extensions for judges, civil servants, says PM

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said that extending the service of civil servants, including top judges, is not automatic and must follow the procedures set out in the Federal Constitution. Anwar said he found it puzzling that retirements, whether of civil servants, judges or other officers, had come into question. 'There are procedures for when one reaches their retirement age. One does not automatically get their tenure extended… In this case, I was criticised,' he said in his speech at the Prime Minister's Department's monthly assembly. Anwar said there appeared to be a campaign to pressure the government to either extend or end specific tenures, which he warned could politicise institutions meant to remain independent. 'If you understand the Federal Constitution, you would know the process,' he said. 'There's a commission, the prime minister, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Then, it (an appointment) is presented for discussion with the Conference of Rulers. So all those steps must be followed.' Amid talk of lobbying, Anwar said this was precisely why he had deliberately avoided meeting with senior judges apart from the chief justice. The judiciary is currently facing a series of impending retirements. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat retires on July 1. Her expected successor, Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, is due to retire just a day later, while Federal Court judge Nallini Pathmanathan will retire in August.
