Relocation of Ambedkar Open University to A.P. brings cheer to stakeholders
The university employees working at the study centres located in Andhra Pradesh, and not received salaries since January this year, heaved a sigh of relief as their financial ordeal will end soon. The BRAOU management in Telangana had refused to certify their services since January citing lapse of the 10-year period during which Hyderabad served as the common capital of the two Telugu-speaking States as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. It had also refused to admit students from Andhra Pradesh from 2024-25 academic year stating that it was winding up its A.P. operations and leaving thousands of aspiring students in the lurch.
The BRAOU is listed in the Class X schedule of the A.P. State Reorganisation Act and the bifurcation process of the university (distribution of assets and liabilities between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the stipulated 52:48 ratio respectively), has not yet been done.
Established in August 26, 1982, as Andhra Pradesh Open University through the APOU Act, it was the country's first open university and was renamed as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University on October 26, 1991. While the government is keen on ensuring that admissions to the open university are rolled out in the academic year 2025-26, the details of how the officials plan to go about the admission process due in June, is yet to be known.
The official announcement of the proposed new headquarters of the university at Eluru was made on May 23 through GO No. 24. The university is seen as the need of the hour by students who are unable to pursue higher education through conventional institutions and intend to opt for distance education mode.
However, its proposed location at Eluru has not gone down well with many stakeholders, who feel that the university being a State-level facility, it should be established at Vijayawada.
One such demand has come from the leaders of Kula Vyatireka Porata Samithi (KVPS). The samithi's State general secretary A. Malyadri has urged the government to locate the new facility on the premises of Ambedkar Smriti Vanam in Vijayawada, as the place is centrally located and accessible to students from across the State. Besides the fact that the place is well connected, he said the partially completed buildings at Ambedkar Smriti Vanam could be utilised for the purpose.
Pointing out that the Officer on Special Duty, Velaga Joshi, who has been overseeing the university's activities from Vijayawada, should be allowed to continue working from here. Mr. Malyadri said he would write separate letters to the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, Minister for HRD and Minister for Social Welfare to consider his plea and do the needful.

Workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and from other political parties forced the removal outside the public relations office of Virendrasinh Bahadursinh Jadeja, who represents Rapar assembly constituency in Gujarat. Will compel BJP to chant our ‘Jai Bangla' slogan after 2026 Assembly polls: Abhishek Banerjee
Kolkata: The BJP will be compelled to chant the 'Jai Bangla' slogan after the West Bengal Assembly election scheduled next year, Trinamool Congress' general secretary and the party's Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee said on Monday. 'Already, the BJP has started realising the importance of admiring the Bengali culture. So they have started chanting 'Jai Ma Durga' and 'Jai Ma Kali'. Take my word, we will make them chant our slogan of 'Jai Bangla' after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. They will lose whatever little presence they have in the West Bengal Assembly next year,' Abhishek Banerjee said, while addressing Trinamool Congress' annual Martyrs' Day rally in central Kolkata. However, there are controversies over whether the slogan of 'Jai Bangla' was an original coinage of the Trinamool Congress. Critics claim that this particular slogan had been traditionally chanted by the leaders and supporters of Bangladesh's former ruling party, Awami League, since the slogan was first chanted by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect behind the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation after erstwhile East Pakistan was liberated from Pakistan. Speaking at the rally, Abhishek Banerjee said that the BJP is attempting nationwide to send Bengali-speaking people to detention camps. 'They want to send the entire population of West Bengal to detention camps. But after the 2026 Assembly elections, the people of West Bengal will send the BJP to those detention camps,' he said. According to him, two 'E' are the tools of the BJP and the Union Government. 'One 'E' is the Enforcement Directorate (ED), through which they are harassing the opposition party leaders. The second 'E' is the Election Commission of India (ECI), through which they are trying to manipulate voters' lists in different states. But we are not scared. I am also asking the people of West Bengal not to be scared,' the Trinamool Congress general secretary said. He concluded his speech by saying that after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress' next target would be to oust the BJP from New Delhi in the next Lok Sabha elections. 'Raise the slogan of 'Jai Bangla' in such a manner that its impact shakes New Delhi,' he said.

Trinamool to launch weekend protests against harassment of Bangla-speaking people in BJP-ruled states
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will launch weekend protest programmes across the state starting July 27, in response to the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. She described this protest programme as yet another "Bhasha Andolon" (Language Movement). Historically, 'Bhasha Andolan' was a political movement in what was then East Pakistan, advocating for the recognition of Bangla as an official language of the country, which ultimately led to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation after erstwhile East Pakistan was liberated from Pakistan in 1971. 'The weekend protests on every Saturday and Sunday will start throughout West Bengal from July 27 and will continue till the state Assembly elections next year. This will be another 'Bhasha Andolon'. We will not tolerate any attack on the Bengali language. We are getting information that Bengali-speaking people are selectively targeted, harassed, and detained in BJP-ruled states,' the Chief Minister said while addressing Trinamool Congress's annual Martyrs' Day rally in central Kolkata on Monday afternoon.. Speaking on the occasion, she gave a call to Bengali-speaking people nationwide to participate in the protests from their respective places by speaking in the Bengali language to the maximum possible extent. 'Organise protest programmes in your way against this attack on the Bengali language. Speak in Bangla as much as possible. Let us together take an oath to protect the language, which is the second most-spoken language in India and Asia and the fifth most-spoken language in the world,' the Chief Minister said. She also cautioned the BJP that the second 'Bhasha Andolon' could not be suppressed by the use of force, and Trinamool Congress could not be stopped from leading the movement. 'Trinamool Congress's asset is that the party is the product of spontaneous love of the people of Bengal. Those who think that by abusing me and Abhishek, they will finish Trinamool Congress are mistaken. They will not be able to finish us by unleashing central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against us,' the Chief Minister said. She also launched a scathing attack against the Union Government, accusing the latter of deliberately stopping payments under various centrally-sponsored schemes to the West Bengal government. 'However, despite that, we are carrying on with those projects in West Bengal from our funds. This we are doing despite paucity of funds,' the Chief Minister said.
