Franchise trap: Senior citizen scammed in 38L pizza deal gone wrong

Surat: What started as a dream venture for a 61-year-old retiree hoping to run a reputed pizza franchise turned into a financial nightmare. In a tale that mixes ambition, deception, and betrayal, a mother-daughter duo and their associate allegedly lured the senior citizen into a well-orchestrated franchise scam — swindling him out of Rs 38 lakh under the guise of selling him the Katargam outlet of an Ahmedabad-based pizza brand.
The victim not only lost his money but also control of the business he was promised ownership of.
According to Singanpor police, the accused — Binita Bhavsar, her daughter Priyansi Mistry, and Dhruv Mistry — allegedly duped Vipul Vachhani, 61, a resident of Adajan, by convincing him to purchase the Katargam franchise for Rs 40 lakh. The trio claimed they were planning to settle abroad and wished to sell the outlet. They have been booked on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.
Vachhani found the opportunity through Bobby Thakkar, an administrator with the pizza company. Thakkar introduced him to the accused, who invited him to visit their outlet in Zircon Complex, Katargam. They encouraged him to spend two months at the shop to gain experience before finalising the deal.
After gaining his trust, the accused agreed to sell the franchise for Rs 40 lakh. Vachhani paid Rs 20 lakh upfront and was promised legal transfer of ownership later.
However, after he paid another Rs 10 lakh over time, the ownership remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, customer payments made online were credited to Binita's account. In Jan 2024, Vachhani requested repayment of Rs 2.32 lakh collected online and asked the accused to clear pending GST dues of Rs 7 lakh and formally hand over the business. But the trio kept delaying with various excuses.
In Feb and March, online customer payments totaling Rs 6.10 lakh were also withheld.
Realising he was being misled, Vachhani approached Thakkar, who gave him the accused's contact details and advised him to shut the shop temporarily for 'renovation'. Vachhani complied and returned the keys to the property owner.
The accused later collected the keys and quietly transferred the franchise to the owner of the Adajan outlet, cutting Vachhani out of the deal completely.
While Binita and Priyansi are currently based in Pune, Dhruv resides in Navsari. Police have initiated a probe and formed teams to trace and apprehend the accused.

Ludhiana: Almost two years have passed since the MC auctioned five parking lots in the city but fresh tenders are nowhere in sight. The civic body initially attributed the delay to the Ludhiana West bypoll. Now, they say that they are waiting for the finance and contracts committee meeting. Officials said that three sites were declared free for parking and it is unclear whether they will be included in the auction. The current parking contractor was hired for one year in October, 2022, but in the absence of an e-auction, he is still serving. Before his demise, former MLA of Ludhiana West, Gurpreet Gogi, made Sarabha Nagar market parking free of charge. When the bypoll was announced, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora announced the Model Town Extension market and two parking lots as parking fee-free. This leaves the MC with the parking lot in Feroze Gandhi market, the multi-storey parking lot near Mata Rani Chowk, Bhadhaur House, and the remaining parking lots of BRS Nagar. Sources said that the MC prepared a proposal for auction and floated tenders in December last year but the tenders were withdrawn due to certain reasons. Officials said that they will flag the issue in the F&CC meeting, after which a decision will be taken. However, things may not be quite as simple. Failure to adopt a single policy for auction of parking sites may lead to major revenue loss. Unmet requirements Before handing over parking sites, the MC fixes certain conditions, including e-ticket machines, uniform with ID cards for employees, display boards showing parking fee, proper marking for parking of two-wheelers and cars and e-pos machines at the entrance of parking site. However, these conditions are rarely fulfilled. No penalties imposed Penalties ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 can be imposed for violations. If the contractor repeats the same mistake thrice, then the contract can be terminated. One of the strategies was to aggressively buy Bank Nifty's constituent stocks and futures in the morning. At the same time, it would buy put options on the index. In the afternoon, it would sell stocks bought in the morning. This selling pushed up prices of options on Bank Nifty, which the fund had bought in the morning. Once put option prices rose, those were sold to make huge profits. The other strategy was concentrated selling or buying of Nifty index options in the last two hours of the expiry day to swing index levels to profit from such trades. So, what happens next? The fund has been asked to present its side of the case to Sebi within 21 days. Sebi is expected to expand the scope of its investigations into the trading operations of Jane St in India. The interim order focuses on the Jan 2023 to March 2025 period. The regulator is also expected to investigate if manipulative strategies were used in other indices and in BSE's segments.
