UK to back global rules on AI in schools, says Phillipson

In a speech to the Education World Forum in London on Monday, Bridget Phillipson will aim to put Britain at the forefront of a 'revolution' in education technology.
As well as funding efforts to create guidelines on the safe and effective use of AI in the classroom, she will announce £1.1 million in funding for a pilot examining how technology can improve staff workload, outcomes for pupils and inclusivity for children with special educational needs.
She will say: 'Setting AI on the right track now is the most important challenge for global education in a generation.
'We need to come together to grow a global, collective consensus – a suite of effective tools, built on top-class evidence.'
The UK will also host a summit next year to support the development of global guidelines on using generative AI in education.
Existing guidelines leave schools free to make their own decisions about the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT, provided they comply with their legal obligations.
The guidelines also say that safety should be the 'top priority' when deciding whether to use generative AI, and that schools should not use pupils' work to train AI models without permission.
The Government is already using AI to produce attendance reports in an effort to cut down the number of days children miss school, and aims to use the technology in other areas as well.
Ms Phillipson is expected to tell Monday's conference: 'We're using technology to free up teachers to spend more time teaching.
'For children that means more attention, higher standards, better life changes.
'For teachers – less paperwork, lower stress, fewer drains on their valuable time.'

How Earth could look in 10,000 years, according to AI

Hiyah Zaidi Published June 30, 2025 3:23pm Link is copied Comments It seems that society is changing faster than ever, with technology helping us to connect to those around us. This process is known as globalisation, and also means that a lot of modern buildings look the same. But as global warming and climate change threatens the Earth, Metro wanted to get a clearer idea of what the Earth will look like in 10,000 years. So, naturally, we turned to AI and this is what it showed us (Picture: Shutterstock / Shutterstock AI) AI takes information from what is already out there on the internet – so it can't make up something new. However, this image looks slightly dystopian, as the AI Midjourney has spat out an image of Mexico being run-down, with large tech towers looming in the background that look slightly like they have been made out of scrap metal. We would hope that by the year 12,025 things would be more equal, but apparently, AI does not see it that way (Picture: Midjourney) AI seems to imagine that South Africa will begin to merge its landscape into nature, and greenery will be everywhere. Perhaps that is what has cleared up the skies, as climate change as we see it could lead to greyer skies. Although it doesn't say much to overpopulation, it is still nice to see humans are thriving, and are adapting to living with the Earth rather than destroying it (Picture: Midjourney) India is known for its toxic smog, and yet, not a trace of it has found its way into this image. Either there are aliens in the sky, or we have dramatically changed the face of air travel, and the luminous blue really screams 'futuristic'. AI did a nice touch adding traditional architecture with sky high roads and pointy high-rises – although the middle structure does seem to be drawing everyone in since they're all eerily walking in the same direction (Picture: ChatGPT) Now this is what we're talking about. It seems New Zealand has managed to do well for itself, and 10,000 years is enough time for a drastic makeover. Although we can't really say for sure what the massive hole in the right hand side building is for sure, we can guess it's for those air-travel things to do a loop-de-loop. If you can't afford your own personal air-craft, no need to worry as there is a handy high-speed rail that lets you see the greenery. Frodo should have waited to take the ring to Mordor, as this seems so much nicer (Picture: ChatGPT) Drivers beware, walkers don't care. Although any day crossing a road in present-day London will tell you that is already true. The main question here is why is the US so much more futuristic? And where are all those people going? Why are some people wearing more tech than others and what does it allow them to do? The year 12, 025 seems like a confusing time. The greenery is a nice touch, although it does seem that a lot of office space will be given to plants instead so maybe we will get those four day working weeks after all (Picture: Shutterstock / Shutterstock AI) The UK looks like it's straight out of Star Trek, and for some reason it's the only place that has a change in clothes. It's a huge wonder what green initiative will take place, and when, since this seems to be a recurring theme across the images. The UK has different aircrafts, which seem to match the top of some buildings. Again, pedestrians and drivers seem to share a road which does not seem like the safest option. At least the sky is clear though (Picture: Chatbox)

Prices for the (literally) edgy Kia EV4 start from £34,695

Electric Tesla Model 3, Cupra Born and VW ID.3 rival is here, but no word on the fastback as yet Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Prices are in for the distinctively angular Kia EV4 – the newest fully electric, four-door hatchback on the Korean carmaker's block – and the entry-level 'Air' trim will cost from £34,695, a smidge more than the basic Cupra Born. For that sub-£35k price tag, the Air gives you a single 201bhp (150kW) front-mounted electric motor capable of generating 209lb ft, a 58.3kWh battery and 273 miles of range. It also gives you a pair of 12.3in displays, and an integrated 5.3in climate touchscreen with real buttons for heating and cooling. Advertisement - Page continues below Kia's also integrated ChatGPT (because that's the trend now), Android Auto and Apple Carplay. There's another version of the EV4 Air that gets the same 201bhp motor and a bigger 81.4kWh battery, which bumps range right up to 388 miles and the starting price to £37,695 – akin to the range-topping Renault Megane E-tech. You might like Step up to the sportier 'GT-Line' trim, and for £39,395 you'll get - that's right - the same 201bhp motor, that bigger battery with 362 miles of juice, and choice goodies like bigger 19in wheels and the option of a 'Wolf Grey' paintjob, fur real. Otherwise white is the standard exterior finish on the Kia, so prepare to throw in another £650 for black, blue or red. The GT Line's styling and additional tech kit – including more comfy seats, ambient lighting and a wireless charger for your phone – carry through into the range-topping 'GT-Line S', which kicks off from £43,895. Same battery as the GT-Line. And e-motor. And range. And while that price will put you over the Expensive Car Supplement threshold, the extra four grand buys heated and cooled seats, a fancier sound system, HUD, park assist, electric tailgate and other driver assistance features. Advertisement - Page continues below On a home charger, charging will take over five hours for the smaller battery, or seven for the bigger one. The EV4 has 400V electrical architecture, able to support 350kW power delivery cutting the 10-80 per cent recharge to around half an hour. Elsewhere, there's no word on that fastback yet - sorry. For now, order books are only open for the hatchback, but stay tuned for more news on that one when we get it. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. Artificial intelligence chatbots are reshaping how we approach problem-solving, content creation, and productivity enhancement. This detailed comparison examines four leading AI systems—ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Grock—to help you identify the best fit for your specific needs. By analyzing their performance across critical areas, this guide provides actionable insights into their strengths and limitations. The video below from Mrwhosetheboss gives us a detailed comparison of the four AI tools. Watch this video on YouTube. Key Performance Areas Problem-Solving When addressing complex challenges, ChatGPT and Google Gemini stand out for their ability to balance theoretical reasoning with practical solutions. These systems excel in breaking down intricate problems into manageable steps, making them reliable for both academic and professional tasks. Grock, while impressively fast and confident, often sacrifices depth for brevity, which can limit its effectiveness in nuanced scenarios. On the other hand, Perplexity struggles with accuracy in highly detailed or layered problems, making it less dependable for users requiring precision. Product Recommendations AI-driven product research can be a mixed bag. Grock leads in identifying specific product features and delivering concise recommendations. However, all four systems occasionally generate incorrect or fabricated information, emphasizing the need for users to verify AI-generated suggestions. While ChatGPT and Google Gemini provide more detailed analyses, their recommendations may lack the specificity that Grock offers. Perplexity often provides reliable sourcing but can falter in delivering actionable insights. Translation and Language Understanding For multilingual users, ChatGPT and Perplexity excel in handling nuanced translations and complex linguistic tasks. Their ability to interpret context and cultural subtleties makes them ideal for global communication. Google Gemini delivers solid translations but lacks the finesse and contextual depth of its competitors. Grock, while fast, often produces overly literal translations, which can hinder effective communication in professional or creative settings. Critical Thinking and Analysis All four systems demonstrate the ability to identify logical fallacies and analyze complex scenarios. However, ChatGPT and Perplexity shine in analytical reasoning, particularly when interpreting visual data or addressing abstract concepts. Their capacity to break down arguments and provide detailed explanations makes them invaluable for tasks requiring critical thinking. Google Gemini performs well in structured analyses but can be overly verbose, while Grock prioritizes speed over depth, limiting its analytical utility. Content Generation For creative tasks, ChatGPT leads the pack with its ability to produce well-structured and engaging content, including itineraries, stories, and articles. Its versatility makes it a go-to choice for users seeking high-quality outputs. Google Gemini offers detailed responses but often leans toward verbosity, which can detract from usability. Perplexity and Grock show inconsistency in creative outputs, making them less reliable for content-heavy projects. Image and Video Generation In multimedia tasks, Google Gemini emerges as the leader, particularly in video generation, where it delivers high-quality visuals suitable for professional projects. ChatGPT and Perplexity perform adequately in image generation, offering decent results for less demanding tasks. Grock, however, struggles with accuracy and detail, making it less effective for users requiring precise or high-quality multimedia outputs. Fact-Checking Accuracy is a cornerstone of AI reliability. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Grock perform well in debunking false claims and providing factual information. Perplexity, while generally accurate, occasionally lacks confidence in its responses, which can undermine user trust. This highlights the importance of cross-referencing AI-generated information, especially for critical decisions. Integrations and Features Google Gemini excels in integrations, particularly with Google Workspace and live data, making it a strong choice for users embedded in the Google ecosystem. Its seamless connectivity enhances productivity and collaboration. ChatGPT offers a wide range of plugins and customizable assistants, providing versatility for diverse applications. Grock uses real-time data from X (formerly Twitter), giving it a unique edge for social media-related tasks. Perplexity, while functional, lacks the advanced integrations of its competitors. Memory and Personalization Memory retention remains a challenge for all four systems. None of the evaluated AIs demonstrate strong conversational memory, which limits their ability to provide personalized experiences over time. This shortcoming affects their utility in tasks requiring long-term context or user-specific adaptations, highlighting an area for future development. Humor and Creativity For users prioritizing humor, Grock outshines its competitors, likely due to its training on data from X. Its witty and concise responses make it ideal for casual interactions. However, ChatGPT remains the most versatile for crafting creative and engaging content, offering a balance between entertainment and productivity. Google Gemini and Perplexity provide functional but less dynamic outputs in this area. Speed and Responsiveness For time-sensitive tasks, Grock is the fastest, delivering quick responses with minimal delay. ChatGPT follows closely, offering a balance between speed and detail. Google Gemini, while slower, provides more comprehensive answers, appealing to users who prioritize depth over speed. Perplexity offers moderate responsiveness but lacks the agility of its competitors. Voice Interaction In voice-based applications, ChatGPT and Google Gemini lead with their advanced voice synthesis capabilities. Their natural and human-like interactions make them suitable for virtual assistants, accessibility tools, and other voice-driven tasks. Grock and Perplexity lag behind in this area, offering less refined voice outputs. Final Rankings ChatGPT (29 points): The most consistent and versatile option, excelling in problem-solving, creativity, and usability.
