MILAN, June 22 — Giorgio Armani will not attend his group's two shows at Milan's Men's Fashion Week as he is currently recovering at home, a company statement said on Friday, the first time in his career he will miss one of his catwalk events.
The designer, who will turn 91 in July, will not be at the Emporio Armani catwalk on Saturday or at the Giorgio Armani show on Monday, the statement said. It did not expand on his current health conditions.
Italian newswires reported on Friday that Armani had been in a Milan hospital for some days.
'Mr. Armani has worked with his usual dedication on the collections that will be presented,' the company statement said, adding that although he could not be there in person, he will follow every step of the shows.
Known as 'Re Giorgio' – King Giorgio – the designer is known for overseeing every detail of his collection and every aspect of his business, from advertising to fixing models' hair as they head out onto the catwalk.
At the end of all his shows, he comes out from backstage and onto the catwalk to greet his audience.
In his absence, Leo Dell'Orco, head of menswear design, will be doing so on his behalf, the group added. — Reuters

James Gunn's new ‘Superman' returns to screens with ‘kindness, flying dogs and space battles'

LONDON, July 3 — Donning the famous red cape for the first time in the new Superman movie gave actor David Corenswet a big confidence boost. A relative newcomer, Corenswet follows in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve and more recently Henry Cavill, taking over the role of Clark Kent and Superman in the reboot movie, which was launched with a red carpet fan event in London yesterday. 'When the cape gets on, it really ties the whole thing together. You walk out with it flowing behind you, you feel like, 'Yeah, I'm all right, I'll do okay',' Corenswet, whose acting credits include TV series The Politician and Hollywood and films Twisters and Pearl, said on the red carpet. Superman offers the first look at director James Gunn's vision for the remake of the DC Universe (DCU) at Warner Bros . The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, who also wrote the Superman screenplay, said he wanted to combine elements from the comic books and the mythos of Superman in cinema. 'My Superman is about, you know, in a world where there's so much meanness and so many petty things happening, Superman, who can often be seen as old-fashioned or too earnest, too kind, he is those things. I think that's the most rebellious thing that you can be in this day and age,' Gunn said. 'It's a movie about kindness. But it's all told in this universe with giant monsters and flying dogs and robots and space battles and everything else.' The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane and Nosferatu, About a Boy and X-Men franchise actor Nicholas Hoult stars as Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. Hoult also drew inspiration from comic books for his portrayal of the iconic villain. 'For instance, reading All-Star Superman, Lex really prides himself on being the peak alpha human, and so I really wanted to bring that kind of energy,' Hoult said. Brosnahan said her predecessors in the role had set the bar high. Gunn's vision for the movie was what set it aside from previous films, she said. 'I think James's knowledge of and love for these characters and the different adventures that he's taking them on with the different friends he's taking them with, kind of inherently brings it into present day,' said Brosnahan. Superman begins its global cinematic rollout on July 9. — Reuters

Croatia's biggest concert stirs controversy as Nazi-sympathising singer Thompson returns to stage in Zagreb

ZAGREB, July 3 — A concert by a singer known for pro-Nazi sympathies will draw a record-breaking 450,000 fans to Zagreb this weekend and Croatian authorities yesterday warned people to steer clear as the event jams its streets. A dozen hospitals have been put on alert to brace for a surge in demand during the Thompson concert on Saturday, while thousands of police will be deployed to manage the influx into a city already hosting summer tourists. A field hospital with 200 beds will also be set up near the racecourse venue and fans have been warned to prepare for summer heat. Marko Perkovic, known by his stage name Thompson, has been banned from performing in several countries due to his sympathies with Croatia's World War II fascist Ustasha regime. Ustasha symbols are common at Thompson concerts, and he begins one of the most popular songs by screaming a fascist slogan infamously used by the Nazi-allied regime. 'People adore him' The concert sold out in just a few days in April, with a third of his fans under 28, according to the ticketing platform Entrio. Police said there would be at least 450,000 people at Croatia's biggest concert. 'People adore him, due to his patriotic songs and affection for Croatia,' 22-year-old Nikola, who did not give his family name, told AFP ahead of the concert. The student ignores the Ustasha shouts from Thompson and said it just reflects the 'wartime' era in which the song was recorded. 'I was not even born when it was released.' A folk-rock icon of Croatia's right-wing, Thompson first became popular for his nationalist songs in the 1990s during the country's war of independence. But his manager, Zdravko Barisic, told local media that it was 'inappropriate' to accuse him of Ustasha sympathies and that he was hosting a 'concert, not a political rally'. Zagreb's left-wing mayor, Tomislav Tomasevic, rejected earlier calls to ban the performance, saying they were 'counter-productive'. 'Patriotic charge' In recent years, Croatia has seen a growing tolerance for its pro-Nazi past and critics accuse authorities of failing to sanction the use of Ustasha emblems. The Ustasha persecuted and killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, anti-fascist Croatians, Roma and others in concentration camps during World War II. But historian Hrvoje Klasic told AFP that the singer's popularity does not reflect an increasing support for far-right movements in mainstream society. The vast majority of fans perceive Thompson as a 'patriot, presenting traditional values like homeland, religion, family', Klasic told AFP. 'Croatian society traditionally leans slightly to the right, with a patriotic charge.' The last parliamentary elections, however, saw the Homeland Movement (DP), known for its nationalist and anti-migrant rhetoric, join the coalition government. — AFP

World leaders, wild ride: Priyanka Chopra joins John Cena and Idris Elba in buddy-action romp ‘Heads of State'

LONDON, July 2 — Actors John Cena and Idris Elba embark on a wild friendship journey in the comedy action adventure Heads of State. Cena plays Hollywood action hero turned US President Will Derringer, while Elba stars as the experienced and cranky British Prime Minister Sam Clarke, an army veteran. When a tense meeting between the two disparate leaders is followed by an attack that threatens to blow up the world order, they must come together to save the day. Cena and Elba, who also executive produced the movie, previously worked together on the 2021 superhero film The Suicide Squad. 'Honestly, our time on screen is effortless. He brings the best out of me and, in his words, I try to do my best to provide an environment where he can shine,' Cena said at the movie's London premiere on yesterday. 'I love the friendship nature of this film,' he added. The movie is directed by Russian filmmaker and musician Ilya Naishuller, who said Cena and Elba brought a realness to their roles. 'They feed off each other as any good couple would, and they know how to argue together in such a way where this is the perfect combination of the American happy-go-lucky, optimistic president and the prime minister who is real about the job and how difficult it is,' Naishuller said, adding he set out to make a summer blockbuster in the vein of the buddy action comedies of the 1980s and 90s. 'The goal was, I want to do an hour and 45 of the highest quality entertainment I can do and just do a crowd-pleaser and make sure that the people sitting at home on July the 4th are going to be united and having a great time,' he said. Heads of State also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the role of the pun-loving top MI6 agent Noel Bisset. 'It was really different, because it was a comedy. Most of the action I've done has been in drama and thrillers,' Chopra Jonas said. 'I love my puns,' she added. 'I mean, listen, I love a good pun. You've got to be smart to be punny.' Heads of State starts streaming on Prime Video on July 2. — Reuters
