Joe Rothwell thankful for chance to finally join Rangers
Rothwell – who has signed a three-year contract – will link up again with new Gers manager Russell Martin, having played on loan for him at Southampton in the successful 2023-24 campaign, which ended with victory in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at Wembley.
👊 Getting straight to work
— Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) July 3, 2025
Former Manchester United trainee Rothwell revealed there was a possibility he could have joined Rangers when he was leaving Blackburn in the summer of 2022, before instead opting to sign for the Cherries.
'It probably took a little bit longer than I would have would have liked it to, but I am delighted it is finally done and I can't wait to get going now,' Rothwell told a press conference.
'Just before I signed for Bournemouth, it was kind of a toss-up between the two (with Rangers).
'I decided to go to Bournemouth at the time, but I am thankful that the offer came back around this time and I jumped straight at it.'
We can confirm that Joe Rothwell has joined Rangers on a permanent transfer.

Rothwell added: 'I think selfishly I always had in my head, once when I left United as a kid, my plan was always to try and get back and play in the Premier League.
'So they (Bournemouth) gave me the opportunity to do that and it was something that I couldn't turn down at the time.'
Having taken up a new challenge in Scotland, Rothwell feels Rangers – who have also brought in right-back Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, midfielder Lyall Cameron and defender Emmanuel Fernandez – can move forward under Martin.
'The manager was obviously a big factor in me coming here,' Rothwell said.
'He sees the game how I would see it if I was a manager, that was the main pull, but it is more about how he is as a guy.
'You want to come and work for him. The manager treats everyone the same – there is no-one better than anyone else.
'He is really good at bringing clubs back together and creating a fantastic bond.'
Rothwell added: 'If you want to win things, it starts off the pitch, so if he can get everyone buying into the same thing here, I think he can create a really successful time at Rangers.
'You can see from the outside how huge this club is – it is built to win trophies.
'Hopefully, if the manager implements how he wants to do things, it can be really successful and we can go on and win things.'

Arsenal issue statement after Thomas Partey charged with five counts of rape
Arsenal have released a statement after the Gunners former midfielder, Thomas Partey, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed on Friday that Partey had been charged. Partey has been charged on two counts of rape which relate to one woman, three counts of rape relating to a second woman, and one count of sexual assault relating to a third woman. The Ghanaian international will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday August 5 2025. All the offences are alleged to have taken place during 2021 and 2022. The Met Police say an investigation by detectives commenced in February 2022 after they first received a report of rape. It comes just days after the 32-year-old was released by Arsenal. He departed the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, following the expiration of his contract in North London. Partey joined Arsenal from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in September 2020 after the Gunners paid his £45million release clause. The Ghana international went on to make a total of 167 appearances, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists. In a short statement released to the BBC on Friday night, Arsenal said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case." Met Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, commented: "Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. "We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing CIT@ Partey made 52 appearances for Arsenal last season, his highest tally in an Arsenal shirt across a single campaign. The Gunners have finished second in the Premier League for three seasons in a row and they reached the Champions League semi-finals last term. Mikel Arteta had spoken about his hopes that Partey would be handed a new contract this summer. However, with Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard both expected to join the club, the decision was made to part ways with Partey at the end of his contract.

Gers gaffer Martin said: 'We are working hard to make sure we get the right ones. The ones already in we are so pleased about, and the ones we think will come in in the next week or two we'll be so pleased with them. 'We still need some help but we are all aware of that. 'We can't be in a rush and just sign the ones we're not too sure about. We have to go after the ones we really want. 'We have to look at character first. Can you come here and add to us as a group in terms of your behaviour, the way you train, the way you work, who you are as a human being? 'Playing for this club won't be for everyone, so character first then talent after. We want to get both. 'We're at a disadvantage because we have these early European qualifiers. Kevin Thelwell is calling guys who are still on the beach. 'We are waiting for things to happen, so it's not a lack of willingness. Everyone's working hard. 'The ones we have brought in so far, great. But there will be more.' Leicester defender Conor Coady could be among the new arrivals with talks ongoing. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview And Martin is delighted with Gers' business so far. He said: 'Manny and Joe had their first session yesterday. They were tired afterwards because it had been a big day for them. 'Joe will fit in great because he's a top player and a top person. He was an important one for us and I was really pleased we got him in. 'We've so many exciting young players that we need a bit of help on the pitch from senior players who have been there and lived the moments. He knows what it takes to win, so he'll bring that. 'Also, people need to be desperate to play for this club. If people are considering other options it's on to the next one. 'Joe was desperate to come here. Same with Manny. I spoke to my old manager at Peterborough, Darren Ferguson, and I really believe Manny can be what he wants to be.' Rothwell admitted he knocked back a move to La Liga because he couldn't turn down Gers for the second time. The midfielder, who has signed a three-year deal, revealed he came close to joining Rangers back in 2022. The 30-year-old said: 'I had the opportunity to come here just before I signed for Bournemouth. It was a toss up between the two. 'I decided to go there at the time but thankfully the offer came again and I jumped straight at it. 'This time there was interest from elsewhere, but as soon as I knew Rangers came calling, I wanted to go back to that big club mentality. 'They fitted the bill for me and with the manager coming here, it was a no-brainer.' 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
