Malaysia, Brunei deepen ties with joint disaster response and cross-border security initiatives, says DPM Zahid
In a Facebook post today, Ahmad Zahid said the commitment was expressed during a bilateral meeting with Brunei's Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Setia Awang Ahmaddin Abdul Rahman, on the sidelines of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2025 in Geneva.
He expressed appreciation for Brunei's readiness to continue joint training between the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) and Brunei's National Disaster Management Centre, including knowledge transfer programmes and training based on best practices.
'We also agreed to intensify joint exercises and field training, including rescue operations and emergency simulations, which were recently conducted.
'These trainings not only foster trust between agencies but are also essential in coordinating operating procedures in the event of cross-border disasters,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said Malaysia and Brunei had proven that close neighbourly ties, combined with strong commitment, could build more robust regional cooperation in disaster and security matters.
He gave his assurance that the synergy would continue to be strengthened in the interest of the safety and well-being of the people in both countries. — Bernama

Fifty MAF retirees appeal to Federal Court over pension adjustment ruling
PUTRAJAYA, July 3 — Fifty retired Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel have turned to the Federal Court to seek leave to appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision regarding their pension adjustment claim. Lawyer Mohamed Hanif Khatri Abdulla, representing the retirees, confirmed that the notice of motion was filed today and said the Federal Court has fixed August 4 for case management. In their application, the applicants are seeking the Apex court's determination on two questions of law concerning the pension adjustment issue. On June 4, the appellate court three-man bench overturned the High Court's earlier ruling which held that MAF retirees who retired before January 1, 2013 were entitled to have their pensions adjusted to the rates and methods applied to the retirees who retired after Jan 1, 2013. The Court of Appeal held that the MAF retirees failed to prove that the government, the prime minister, the senior defence minister and the Malaysian Armed Forces Council had breached the provisions under the Federal Constitution. Fifty MAF personnel of various ranks, including major, lieutenant, staff sergeant and private, filed an originating summons in the High Court on November 17, 2022, seeking a declaration that the government had violated the provisions in the Federal Constitution read together with Section 187 of the Malaysian Armed Forces Act 1972 for their respective failures to implement a new pension adjustment for the MAF retirees who retired before January 1, 2013. They claimed the government had failed to implement new pension adjustments for all MAF retirees who retired before January 1, 2013, causing a significant pension gap between the MAF retirees who retired before January 1, 2013 and those who retired after January 1, 2013. — Bernama

Minister urges review after Melaka mosque calligraphy's spelling error of ‘Allah' goes unnoticed for years
KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 – Mosque and surau committees nationwide have reportedly been urged to review the Arabic calligraphy of khat displayed in their premises to prevent religious offences coming from errors. After a furore over a mosque in Melaka, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar reportedly said it was crucial to verify the source and accuracy of any calligraphy to avoid future issues. 'Mosque and surau committees must take the initiative to verify any calligraphy before displaying it at these premises,' he was quoted saying by Harian Metro. 'There must be an effort to thoroughly check any calligraphy to be displayed, ensuring that it aligns with the Quran and Hadith.' A mosque in Melaka had reportedly displayed a wrong spelling of the word 'Allah' for the past few years in its interior decoration, but it had gone unnoticed after a Facebook account highlighted the matter. The calligraphy had spelt the word 'Allah' using three lam characters in the Arabic spelling rather than two. Mohd Na'im said Melaka's State Executive Councillor for Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs, Datuk Rahmad Mariman, had also instructed all mosques and suraus in the state to reassess their calligraphy. He also thanked members of the public for highlighting the mistake but urged that feedback be given respectfully. 'Thank you to those in the community who spoke up to correct the mistake. If the khat is wrong, we correct it,' he said. 'I only ask that we pay attention to how we deliver our feedback. If we see a mistake, there's no need to use insulting or belittling language.'

Targeted SST expansion keeps Malaysia's inflation in check, says Amir Hamzah
KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — The expansion of the scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) can control the cascading effect on all goods because it is implemented in a targeted manner and not comprehensively which will burden the people, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He stressed that the expansion of the scope of SST only applies to some goods and not to most basic daily necessities of the people. 'We can control the cascading effect in what we expand in the SST, like in March last year when we expanded (the SST rate from six per cent to eight per cent) we also had a bubble system and there was no effect. 'If you don't believe me, look at the inflation figures. Is the inflation in Malaysia at a very high level? No. Last year it was 2.0 per cent so it was manageable and under control,' he said during the Keluar Sekejap podcast session broadcast on YouTube, hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan. According to Amir Hamzah, the government has assessed the need to reduce the burden on the right segments by choosing to expand the scope of SST to only certain goods. 'Because we can choose, who says choosing is wrong? If we choose the right segment and it reaches the right target, then what we are doing is a better way. 'The understanding is that our implementation is targeted, and not across the board which will burden the people and we also need to see what the government does with the results obtained,' he said. Amir Hamzah explained that among the positive impacts that can be seen through the government's efforts is increasing the number of recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) from 700,000 individuals to 5.4 million recipients. 'They get assistance of between RM50 and RM200 a month to buy basic goods. That is the support that the government can provide when it has the revenue,' he said. Meanwhile, commenting on the issue of the upcoming RON95 subsidy rationalisation, Amir Hamzah said the government is still at the discussion stage in assessing the appropriate mechanism including the use of the Central Database Hub (PADU) system to set the threshold value. 'There is a possibility that we will start with a high cut line because we think that for now, this is the only level we can set. 'This will be discussed in the Cabinet where the cut line is reasonable. We think before the end of this year, we will roll out (subsidy rationalisation of) RON95,' he said. — Bernama
