TikTok building new version of app ahead of expected US sale: report

TikTok is building a new version of its app for users in the US ahead of a planned sale of the app to a group of investors, The Information reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. This comes as President Trump said on Friday he will start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday about a possible TikTok deal. He said the US 'pretty much' has a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app. Advertisement TikTok plans to launch the new app in the U.S. on Sept. 5, according to The Information. REUTERS Last month, Trump extended to Sept. 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the U.S. assets of TikTok. TikTok has developed a plan to launch the new app to US app stores on Sept. 5, the report said. Advertisement The report added that TikTok users will eventually have to download the new app to be able to continue using the service, although the existing app will work until next March, though the timeline could change. TikTok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. President Trump said Friday that he will begin talking to China this week about a possible TikTok deal. AP Advertisement A deal had been in the works earlier this year to spin off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new U.S.-based firm, majority-owned and operated by U.S. investors. That was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump said the U.S. will probably have to get a deal approved by China.

Buc-ee's is expanding: Where future travel centers are set to open

(NEXSTAR) — It's been a busy few weeks for Buc-ee's, the Texas-based convenience store and gas station chain that has developed a cult following in recent years. In early June, Buc-ee's opened its first Mississippi location in Harrison County. Last week, the company opened its first Virginia location and its third store in Georgia. As of early July, Buc-ee's operates 54 stores across nine states, with other stores in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The company has undergone a major multi-state expansion since 2019, and it isn't done yet. Buc-ee's has several more sites that are already under construction. In April, work began on the Buc-ee's location in Benton, Arkansas, at what it described as the largest groundbreaking event in company history. Another Arkansas location in West Memphis is on track to open next year as well. CEO Arch 'Beaver' Aplin III hinted at a potential third location for Arkansas while speaking with Nexstar's KLRT. Ohio expects to get its first Buc-ee's in 2026. Construction began in August 2024 on the location in Huber Heights, located northeast of Dayton. However, work was briefly paused amid a conflict over sewer and water services. The company confirmed to Nexstar's WDTN that the planned opening in late 2025 had been pushed to spring of next year. Buc-ee's is also on track to open locations in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Ocala and Fort Pierce, Florida; Monroe County, Georgia; Ruston and Lafayette, Louisiana; and Goodyear, Arizona. Stores in Louisiana and Arizona mark the first in each state for Buc-ee's. The company's Mebane, North Carolina, store — the state's first — is expected to open in 2026 or 2027. Three additional Buc-ee's could open in 2027: Gallaway, Tennessee; Oak Creek, Wisconsin; and Kansas City, Missouri. Buc-ee's has pursued locations in eight more areas: These locations are at various steps in the process, according to local reporting. Construction has begun on the location in Boerne. No timeline for opening the store has been released. Oak Creek, located about 10 miles south of Milwaukee, announced Buc-ee's had submitted a proposal for a massive location after plans to build one near Madison stalled. Despite pushback from some residents, the city's common council approved the plans in May. Construction could begin later this year, according to local outlet WISN. In Palmer Lake, the board of trustees approved an annexation request for a proposed Buc-ee's during a contentious meeting in May, Nexstar's KXRM reported. Residents have also pushed back against a proposed Buc-ee's location in southwest Florida, expressing concerns that it could exacerbate flooding in the area and encroach on a wildlife habitat. The Buc-ee's in Anderson was delayed earlier this year due to a nearby interchange. Local leaders told Nexstar's WSPA it would cost about $60 million to fix the interchange, the brunt of which they believe should come from the state. Should all these locations be built and opened before 2027, Buc-ee's will have more than 70 locations across 17 states. Buc-ee's did not immediately respond to Nexstar's request for comment or additional information. The first store of the Texas-based chain opened in 1982, but its first true travel center opened in 2003. That location, in Luling, outside of San Antonio, was damaged in a fire last year. A month prior, that Buc-ee's had been replaced by a new travel center in the same area. It's the massive travel centers — featuring everything from fuel and snacks to Buc-ee's merchandise, hot food, kitchen items, grills, and even hunting gear — that have seemingly attracted a cult-like following to the brand. The company's beloved mascot, Buc-ee the Beaver, receives just as much adoration. He's also been at the center of recent lawsuits from Buc-ee's. Earlier this year, Buc-ee's sued a Florida store, accusing it of selling merchandise sporting what appears to be the beloved beaver logo with punk rock makeovers. Buc-ee's stores are open all day, every day.

Amid AI boom, veteran analyst reboots AMD, Supermicro stock price targets

Nvidia (NVDA) stock typically hogs all the AI spotlight, but if you look at the bigger picture, two other names deserve a deeper look. AMD (AMD) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) stock have been silently positioning themselves at the heart of AI's next big upgrade cycle. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The former is pushing for new GPUs to hyperscalers, desperate for an alternative, while the latter is building the racks that make all that horsepower usable at scale. With that said, a bold and fresh analyst take this week shows why these tech giants are poised to chip away at Nvidia's massive lead. Image source: Cheng/Getty Images One thing is clear from recent weeks: Nvidia's AI crown isn't as untouchable as it looks on paper. AMD, in particular, has been showing that it isn't content playing second fiddle. CEO Lisa Su recently dropped a bombshell at the company's big "Advancing AI" event, unveiling the new Instinct MI350 series. These powerful new GPUs are built to supercharge AI, delivering up to four times more compute performance and a 35× boost in inference. More importantly, the top AI juggernauts in Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI are already kicking the tires on these chips. That shows the bellwethers in the hyperscaler space are itching for a serious Nvidia alternative. Related: Cathie Wood makes surprising chip bet as AI battle heats up While AMD fires up the accelerator race, Supermicro is locking down the racks to run them. Though it was primarily a key player in motherboards and chassis, Supermicro now considers itself a leading hyperscale AI systems powerhouse. Last month, Saudi-based DataVolt signed a jaw-dropping $20 billion multi-year deal to deploy Supermicro's liquid-cooled GPU racks across AI campuses in Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Such an enormous order indicates that Supermicro's modular, dense, and energy-efficient designs are critical in powering AI mega-centers. Nvidia still calls the shots in the AI space, but AMD's MI350X ramp and Supermicro's hyperscale push highlight room for major competition. More Tech Stock News: Analyst reboots IonQ stock price target for surprising reasonApple could make big change to Siri, delight fansVeteran analyst issues big Broadcom call, shakes up AI stock race And with the MI400 series and Helios AI Rack on deck for next year, it's clear AMD and Supermicro are gunning to rewrite the script on AI. Mizuho's latest bullish note shows how AMD and Supermicro offer strong upside for chipmakers looking to feed AI's insatiable compute appetite. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh stuck with his Outperform call on AMD stock but raised his 12-month price target to $152 from $135. That implies a 10.2% bump from Thursday's close at $137.91 and a 12.6% increase from the previous price target. Rakesh called out a "slightly better MI355X ramp" in the second half of this year. That's huge, considering the new Instinct series is arguably AMD's most promising play at challenging Nvidia's AI accelerator dominance. Hyperscalers want alternatives, and AMD's open-standard hardware is firmly on their radars. Related: Analyst reboots AMD stock price target on chip update Still, Mizuho didn't sugarcoat everything. It left its near-term numbers mostly unchanged, keeping the June-quarterly sales forecast at $7.40 billion and EPS at 47 cents, both just shy of consensus. For the full year, Rakesh has trimmed its EPS slightly to $3.90. Nevertheless, the real story is what happens next, with AMD's robust margin mix and high-end AI chips offsetting any short-term softness. Over at Supermicro, Rakesh sees plenty to like, too. He nudged his price target to $47 from $40, a healthy 17.5% bump, while keeping a Neutral rating. The veteran analyst believes the demand for AI servers is running hot. Sizeable shipments for Tier-2 Microsoft Azure partners, plus a steady drumbeat of orders for Supermicro's liquid-cooled GPU, point to an excellent runway ahead. Also, Rakesh models the Saudi Arabia DataVolt deal, adding $2.5 billion in annual sales starting next year, highlighting a massive ramp-up in top-line expansion.
