Angola dominate on day one of IMMAF Africa Champs
Team Angola lived up to its reputation as a dominant force within global mixed martial arts by topping the charts on day one of the IMMAF Africa Championships yesterday in the capital city of Luanda.
With a proud fighting history, the host nation regularly enters by far the biggest team into the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation's flagship tournament on the continent. However, nothing can be taken away from the skill and heart showcased on the day as Team Angola secured 21 medals (10 gold, 10 silver, and one bronze) in the Youth B & C section.
Down at the Pavilhão Multiusos do Kilamba, some familiar faces shone once again for the Republic including Gisela Luna and Claudio Fontoura who claimed their second IMMAF Africa Gold medals after shining in Windhoek, Namibia, last year.
In the tournament's opening bout, 13-year-old Luna, who faced fellow Angolan Monica Cardoso, showcased dominant grappling throughout, controlling the pace and leaving Cardoso with limited opportunities.

Kaizer Chiefs confirm new captain as Nabi makes leadership call
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has officially confirmed Inácio Miguel as the club's new captain, following the departure of Yusuf Maart earlier this month. Maart, who led Amakhosi to their long-awaited 2025 Nedbank Cup triumph by scoring the decisive goal against Orlando Pirates, has completed a move to SV Ried in Austria's Bundesliga. The midfielder joined Chiefs at the beginning of the 2022/2023 season from Sekhukhune United, and now ends his journey in Soweto after three impactful years. Miguel, the dependable Angolan defender, wore the armband during the recent Toyota Cup clash against Asante Kotoko, where Chiefs narrowly lost 3-2 on penalties at Moses Mabhida Stadium. He also led the team throughout their pre-season tour in the Netherlands. 'Today [Saturday], Miguel [was a captain]. He will captain the team for the upcoming season,' Nabi confirmed as quoted by FARPost . Marking a fresh leadership era for the Glamour Boys. Despite the shootout loss to Asante Kotoko, Nabi praised the team's progress, expressing confidence in their readiness for the new season. 'I'm very satisfied with what I saw in the game. It allowed us to see where we are right now,' he said, underlining the importance of pre-season preparation. Although Chiefs created late chances to seal the match in regular time, they failed to convert. Which Nabi acknowledged with frustration but also perspective. 'We could have won the match in the last ten minutes. Unfortunately, we didn't, and that's how it is,' he added. 'We're going to take advantage of those two weeks to improve what has not been positive enough and to coach more on what has been positive.' With Miguel now confirmed as captain, attention turns to the start of the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership campaign. Where Kaizer Chiefs face a stern opening challenge away to Stellenbosch FC. Orlando Pirates show no signs of slowing down in transfer market
Orlando Pirates have sent a strong message to their rivals by signing 10 new players during the current transfer window. However, insiders suggest that the club's recruitment drive might not be over yet. The Buccaneers have already bolstered their squad with high-profile arrivals including Sipho Mbule, Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Yanela Mbuthuma, Masindi Nemtajela, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Tshepo Mashiloane, Sihle Nduli, and Kamogelo Sebelebele. These signings have strengthened the team across various positions, signalling clear intent for the 2025/2026 season. Despite their aggressive activity in the market, Pirates are reportedly still keeping a close eye on available talent. With the window only set to close on 22 September, there remains ample opportunity for further moves. According to a well-placed source, several players were notably absent from the club's pre-season tour to Spain, including Zakhele Lepasa, Katlego Otladisa, and Angolan international Gilberto. Their omissions have sparked speculation about possible exits, either permanently or on loan. Should any of those potential departures go through, Pirates could respond by bringing in one or two more signings to fine-tune their squad. The club aims to be highly competitive on all fronts, including the Betway Premiership, CAF competitions, and local cup tournaments. The source explained. 'With the transfer window open until late September, don't be surprised if there's another addition or two. It will depend on outgoings and how the technical team assesses the balance of the squad coming out of pre-season.' Adding to the uncertainty is the ongoing situation surrounding Relebohile Mofokeng, one of the club's brightest young prospects. Reports suggest there is serious interest from abroad in the 20-year-old. Although Pirates have not commented on the status of any negotiations. If Mofokeng secures a move overseas before the deadline, the Bucs could look to replace him with a creative attacking player. Either locally or from outside South Africa. Should Orlando Pirates make more signings before the deadline day? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
