‘People thought I was going to die': Da L.E.S opens up about life-changing stroke

News247 days ago
Da L.E.S suffered a stroke on his birthday in July 2024, spent a month unconscious in hospital, and is now sharing his recovery journey to inspire others facing health challenges.
After months of family updates, the rapper personally gave an update via YouTube, showing hospital footage and the rehabilitation process while crediting God for his survival.
Da L.E.S. views his survival as bigger than himself, dedicating his healing journey to motivating others and proving that life-altering events 'can happen to anybody.'
Rapper and Love & Hip Hop SA star Leslie Mampe, popularly known as Da L.E.S, has broken his silence about the stroke that nearly claimed his life in July 2024, sharing an intimate glimpse into his recovery journey.
In a heartfelt video posted on his YouTube channel, Da L.E.S Network, the rapper opened up about his month-long hospital stay and ongoing rehabilitation, marking his first public appearance since the life-altering event.
'I suffered a stroke. People thought I was going to die. I made it. I think right now, it's just to motivate people. People want to know what's wrong with me. I want to help people because shit is real; it can happen to anybody.'
'One minute, you're cool; you're like me; next minute, you experience the worst. I feel like my life has changed, but it ain't the end. This is bigger - I have to do this in my life. I just want to document my life,' Da L.E.S revealed in the emotional video.'
The rapper then detailed the traumatic timeline of events: 'So what happened was I had a stroke, it happened on my birthday, and I woke up a month later. Now, I'm just going with the flow,' he said.
He said a stroke is not something one can control.
'I'm just lucky to be alive. Shout out to all the people that came out. I feel good. I feel happy that I'm still here, but the whole purpose of me filming is to let y'all into my life in a real way, I think, and also just to inspire.'
When Da L.E.S initially missed his birthday celebration in July, his family kept details private, posting a brief statement on his Instagram: 'Due to unforeseen circumstances, Da L.E.S will unfortunately not be in attendance at his birthday celebration this evening. Thank you for understanding.'
As concerns grew, the Mampe family issued a more comprehensive statement revealing the severity of his condition: 'Whilst he is in a stable condition, this remains a challenging time for his loved ones, and his family call on the public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult period,' the family said, promising to share updates on Da L.E.S' condition as they became available.
A subsequent update on his Instagram account provided encouraging news about his progress: 'He is receiving rehabilitation and is taking things slow with the support of his loving family.'
Throughout his recovery journey, Da L.E.S has maintained deep gratitude for his survival, crediting his faith above all else. 'I owe it all to God,' he shared, describing his survival as nothing short of miraculous.
The family's most recent statement reflects the overwhelming support the rapper has received during this difficult period: 'Da L.E.S is incredibly thankful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers from his fans, friends, and everyone who's reached out. He will continue to update everyone on his healing process and appreciates all the continued encouragement. Healing takes time, but he's staying positive and focused on full recovery.'

This SteelSeries headset might be the perfect, cutesy set of cans for cozy gamers on TikTok — here's why

If you spend a lot of time on YouTube, TikTok or even Instagram, you may be familiar with the 'cozy gaming' phenomenon. If you don't, allow me to explain. Any game that focuses or emphasizes on relaxation and promotes stress-free gaming is considered a cozy game. These have been around for a long, long time — think Zoo Tycoon. Cozy gaming gained massive popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, and with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it hasn't gone away, with many TikTokers and YouTubers streaming themselves playing such titles with chill music playing in the background and often wearing cutesy headsets. I've just tested a headset that looks like it belongs on a cozy gamer's desk: the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is an extremely comfortable gaming headset thanks to its memory foam earcups, and it comes with a detailed companion app that offers 200+ game-tailored presets — most of which work excellently. The detachable mic is loud and clear too. Why, you ask? It's a fantastic headset that creates immersive soundscapes regardless of the game you're playing, putting you right into the middle of the action — or in the case cozy gaming, non-action. And it looks very cute too, available in a couple fun colorways. If you're on the hunt for a great gaming headset, let me introduce you to the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless... Unlike SteelSeries' other headsets which are usually available in boring black and white colorways, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless comes in two popping colors: Lavender and Aqua. Very girly pop indeed. SteelSeries kindly sent us both colors and I have to say, I absolutely love the Lavender model. It might be the cutest headset I've had the pleasure of using. All I need is a pair of clip-on cat ears. But don't let looks deceive you; the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is as powerful as it is cute. It's fitted with 40mm Neodymium drivers and features spatial audio, both of which work in conjunction to create immersive soundscapes. There's also a companion app which includes 200+ game-tailored EQ presets, each adding a new element of sound. I tested the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless for a week, and regardless of the game I played, the headset ensured I heard every soft and loud sound in all its glory. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, for instance, I loved listening to raindrops falling on the river's surface, or the wind blowing through and displacing blades of grass, a wave of calm washing over me. I wouldn't say TotK is necessarily a cozy game as there are many (stressful) battles involved, but when you're riding your horse through the lush fields of Hyrule or paragliding after jumping off a Skyview Tower, it sure feels cozy. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless does justice to every single sound and musical note in the game, making you feel like you're actually Link. If you've got a stressful job or really, just enjoy playing cozy games to unwind, I'd highly recommend the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless to fully immerse yourself and disconnect from the outside world. Alongside from sounding incredible, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is a mighty comfortable headset. Its 'AirWeave' memory foam earcups are spacious and they sit snugly around your ears, isolating outside noise too. Also, they're extremely breathable, so you don't need to worry about your ears getting too hot or sweat pooling up — as is often the case with leather or leatherette earcups. I also have to say that for cozy gamers who like to livestream their content on TikTok or YouTube, the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is perfect as it comes with a detachable bidirectional boom mic — so don't worry if you don't have an external microphone. It makes you sound loud and clear, and it even reduces external sounds thanks to its noise-canceling nature (you can listen to two clips in my SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless review). Okay, I wouldn't call myself a purveyor of cozy gaming exclusively. I spend a good chunk of my free time playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and the Assassin's Creed franchise, but I'd be lying if I didn't get the appeal of cozy games. I, too, want to sit in a dark room lit up by string lights and candles (no, I am not a witch) and wear a cutesy headset and play Tiny Glade, Journey and even Good Pizza, Great Pizza. Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Imagine kicking your feet back and unwinding, and letting the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless transport you to a world where stress is a thing of the past. And to be honest, any game is a cozy game if you're brave enough. I'd even argue that Baldur's Gate 3 has cozy aspects to it — companions gathered around a fire when you're long resting, hello! If you want a gaming headset that a) completes the cozy gamer look and b) makes games sound so good that real life sounds boring, then go for the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless. If anything, this headset has made me actively want to play cozy games and disassociate from reality.

Conrad Koch brings the ‘Puppet Power' with hilarious new show

In the queue to one of Conrad Koch's sold-out shows at the National Arts Festival were audience members, young and old. With his new show, Puppet Power, the comedian and puppeteer's routine walks a fine line between mature political commentary and rapid-fire puns. While the adults in the audience might get big laughs from Koch's main puppet, Chester Missing's political riffs, the younger people might have more appreciation for characters like Gunter the mosquito or Hilton the ostrich (who's also a bit of a bully). There's basically something for everyone in the show, and Koch makes sure the audience feels involved by making the show interactive. In this high-energy show, Koch's first puppet segment is with Chester Missing. He hilariously unpacks Cyril Ramaphosa and company's visit to the White House earlier this year and the SA 'refugees' who went to the US upon Donald Trump's invitation. He also goes into the GNU with jokes for several of SA's political parties. The overall point in the first segment is that 'everyone is a puppet,' especially those in power. Everyone is being influenced in some way or bending to someone else's will. After that, the show pivots into more silly territory, with an open mic set by Gunter the mosquito, who delivers puns about being an insect. Koch fires off the jokes almost at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it rate. He also brings out his other beloved character, the Afrikaans teacher Mr Dixon, who is one of the show's highlights. Towards the end, Koch has a funny segment with DJ Hoodie, where all the punchlines are excerpts from various pop songs. He ends the show by calling up a member of the audience and putting a dinosaur costume on them, turning them into a puppet, too. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Conrad Koch (@theconradkoch) Puppet Power provides a solid hour of entertainment and genuine laughs, mostly hitting all the right notes. Koch says that with Puppet Power, he is aiming for a particular type of tone. 'What I mean by that is that it's fun, it's family accessible, it's politically progressive, but not shouty about it. So, everyone can come and enjoy the show, but there's a particular politics coming out of it,' he says. 'The core factor is having fun and creating a shared space where South Africans can laugh together,' Koch adds. 'The concept of Puppet Power is that we have the power to push back against the fact that we are being controlled by the media, by social media influencers, etc.' In terms of making the show more fun for families, Koch says: 'I want parents to be able to bring their 12-year-old to the show. They won't get the political jokes, some will, but they generally won't, but they'll enjoy the rest of the show.' 'There are dad jokes, there are characters, someone's parent is going to become a dinosaur. Creating that fun environment is something I am aiming to do.'
