Union Minister Sonowal envisions BIMSTEC Maritime Transport pact as blueprint to transform Bay of Bengal for tourism
The two-day event played a critical role in strengthening regional maritime connectivity, ports cooperation and sustainable development in the Bay of Bengal region.
The event is being attended by policymakers, high end officials, maritime experts, port authorities, private sector stakeholders, and academic scholars from all seven BIMSTEC nations, i.e. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, added the release.
Envisaging the role of BIMSTEC Ports Conclave as the springboard for sustainable development of port led industrial clusters, the Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared his vision and said, 'The BIMSTEC Ports Conclave stands as a springboard to unlock the immense potential of Blue Economy from the Bay of Bengal region. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has a 'Neighbourhood First' Policy and in this sees BIMSTEC nations as key partners in regional prosperity.'
'We want this platform to enhance collaboration among all member nations for strengthening port led industrialisation, digital integration and skill development which in turn boost cruise tourism, and foster coastal economic zones. Together, we aim to create a seamless and efficient network of ports that can serve as engines of growth. Through joint feasibility studies, PPP, and skill development of our maritime workforce, we can transform our region into a thriving hub of global trade, tourism, and sustainable economic progress.' he added
Building upon the momentum of the 1st BIMSTEC Ports Conclave, the meet aims to operationalise the recently signed BIMSTEC Agreement on Maritime Transport Cooperation (AMTC), facilitate dialogue on port-led development, and foster deeper integration in maritime trade, logistics, cruise tourism, and skill development.
The Conclave is designed to chart a common path towards a sustainable, resilient, and integrated maritime future for the Bay of Bengal, promoting robust economic growth while ensuring environmental stewardship. India was first to ratify the agreement. The Union Minister called upon its speedy ratification of AMTC and implementation, added the release.
Sarbananda Sonowal announced that a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre is going to be established under the Indian Ocean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Maritime Transport (IOCE-SMarT) at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai.
Underlining the role of this centre to operationalise AMTC BIMSTEC, Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'The centre marks a significant step forward in operationalising the BIMSTEC AMTC pact. This Centre will act as a catalyst for harmonising maritime policies, advancing digital and green transformation, and building the skills and capacity of our maritime workforce. By fostering collaboration and innovation, it will help reduce trade costs, enhance connectivity, and position the Bay of Bengal as a vibrant, sustainable hub of regional and global trade.'
The Conclave featured two key sessions shaping BIMSTEC's maritime future. The first focused on boosting private sector investment and PPPs to overcome outdated infrastructure and limited coordination, proposing a regional PPP facilitation platform and harmonised laws.
The second explored opportunities from shifting global supply chains, highlighting prospects to attract manufacturing hubs in shipbuilding, logistics, electronics, and renewables. Both sessions stressed the need for co-coordinate strategies, improved connectivity, and policy reforms to unlock the Bay of Bengal's potential as a resilient trade and industry hub.
The Conclave's sessions focused on operationalising the BIMSTEC Maritime Transport Agreement, harmonising customs and logistics to boost intra-regional trade, and unlocking cruise tourism's potential through PPPs and joint branding. Panels explored plans for port-linked industrial zones, digital integration, and sustainable cruise routes, alongside proposals for a BIMSTEC Ports Coordination Centre and a regional Port Community System.
Emphasis was placed on joint investment in multimodal logistics parks, SEZs, and enhancing hinterland connectivity. The need to upskill the maritime workforce through cross-border training, industry-academia ties, and green shipping innovation was highlighted as crucial to the region's future. Collectively, these discussions charted a strategic roadmap to transform the Bay of Bengal into a resilient trade, tourism, and logistics hub.
Speaking about Kaladaan project, which is being discussed at the event, the Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project stands as a transformative gateway connecting India's Northeast to the Bay of Bengal, dramatically reducing transit time and trade costs while unlocking new economic opportunities for the region. As envisioned by our dynamic PM Modi, under India's Act East Policy, Kaladan is not just a bilateral initiative with Myanmar, but a model for seamless regional connectivity across BIMSTEC. By linking ports, trade corridors, and value chains, it has the potential to catalyse inclusive growth, deepen integration with our neighbours, and bring the Northeast closer to the global marketplace.'

At the inaugural session, the Union Minister Sonowal was joined by the Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, the MP of Visakhapatnam, M Sribharat; the Secretary General of BIMSTEC, Mani Pandey; the Secretary of MoPSW, TK Ramachandran; the Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) and Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), M Angamuthu along with 28 delegates from all the BIMSTEC member nations. Ashok Gehlot questions Amit Shah on delay in Kanhaiyalal case probe
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has raised questions over the prolonged delay in justice for Kanhaiyalal, whose murder became a political flashpoint ahead of the previous Assembly elections. Taking to social media just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jaipur, Gehlot alleged that despite quick action by the Rajasthan Police, the case has seen no substantial progress under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which falls under Shah's ministry. Gehlot recalled that before the 2023 Assembly elections, Amit Shah repeatedly invoked the Kanhaiyalal case in election rallies across Rajasthan to target the then Congress-led state government. 'In this case, the Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within just four hours. Both were found to be linked to the BJP. Yet the NIA took over the investigation overnight. We did not object, despite that,' Gehlot stated. He alleged that the BJP misled the public with false claims of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh compensation being paid, which he claimed significantly contributed to the Congress government's defeat. 'Even after three years, justice has not been served. The NIA court doesn't even have a regular judge, and it has failed to get the statements of key witnesses recorded to date,' Gehlot added. Demanding answers from the Union Home Minister, Gehlot questioned how much longer Kanhaiyalal's family will have to wait for justice. 'The BJP used this case for political mileage, but they have done nothing to ensure speedy justice,' he said. He urged Shah to speak on the status of the case during his Jaipur visit and asked whether the Centre plans to strengthen the judicial process or continue using such sensitive matters for political benefit. It needs to be mentioned here that Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will visit Jaipur to participate in the Cooperative and Employment Festival being organised in Dadiya village on Thursday. The event is set to bring several major benefits to Rajasthan. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said that over 8,000 youth will receive appointment letters during the event. He also confirmed that Union Minister Shah will announce several developmental initiatives for the state. As part of the programme, HM Shah will inaugurate 24 warehouses constructed under the Food Storage Scheme and launch 64 millet outlets to promote "Shri Anna". In addition, loans worth approximately Rs 12 crore will be distributed to 1,400 beneficiaries under the Gopal Credit Card Scheme. He will also hand over 2,346 micro ATMs to milk-producing cooperative societies. A significant highlight of the event will be the launch of the White Revolution 2.0 PDCS online registration platform, aimed at streamlining the dairy cooperative sector. HM Shah will also flag off 100 new police vehicles during the occasion. JAIPUR: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is visiting Dadiya village in Jaipur on Thursday to attend the Co-operation and Employment Festival. During the event, major announcements related to the cooperative sector are expected, and appointment letters will be distributed among the youth. However, the visit has drawn sharp political reactions. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticised the Union Minister, demanding answers over the lack of progress in the Kanhaiyalal murder case. 'Today Union Home Minister Amit Shah is coming to Jaipur. Before the assembly elections, you mentioned the Kanhaiyalal case in every rally in Rajasthan and asked for votes in his name,' Gehlot posted on X. He accused the BJP of misleading the public on compensation to the victim's family. 'Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both were associated with the BJP. Despite this, the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight. We didn't object. But the BJP continued to spread lies about compensation, which was one of the major reasons behind our government's fall,' he wrote. Gehlot expressed dismay over the slow pace of justice. 'Three years have passed, but the NIA court has not delivered any sentence. There isn't even a regular judge in the NIA court here, and witness statements haven't been recorded yet,' he said. He urged Shah to respond to the people of Rajasthan: 'How long will Kanhaiyalal's family wait for justice? Will the BJP continue to politicise the issue, or is it serious about delivering justice?' On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal, a tailor from Udaipur, was brutally murdered by two men after he posted content on social media in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The attackers recorded the killing and shared the video online, sparking nationwide outrage. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Foodgrain production has seen a 2.5 to 3-fold increase over last 11 years
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated that the country's food reserves are abundant. We are now exporting wheat, and there has been a significant increase in rice production as well. The domestic rice storage, as production has reached such levels that additional storage facilities are being arranged. This marks a record growth in agricultural output. Singh stated that during the Green Revolution (1966-1979), India's foodgrain production increased by 2.7 million tonnes annually. Between 1980 and 1990, this annual growth rose to 6.1 million tonnes. From 2000 to 2013-14, the average yearly increase was 3.9 million tonnes. However, from 2013-14 to 2025, the annual growth in foodgrain production has reached 8.1 million tonnes. Over the past 11 years, foodgrain production has seen a 2.5 to 3-fold increase, reflecting a remarkable leap in agricultural productivity.
