LABUAN (June 19): Labuan is intensifying preparations to ensure the success of its signature event, the Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025, with aggressive promotional efforts underway across Malaysia and beyond.
Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said preparations are progressing smoothly, with promotional activities rolled out through various platforms, including face-to-face engagements, social media, printed materials, and billboards.
'For the past two months, we have stepped up promotion by distributing leaflets, putting up posters, and hanging banners,' he told Bernama Thursday.
'You can now see these materials displayed in almost every corner of the island, particularly in the town centre,' he said to Bernama Thursday.
Mohd Sukuran said the Borneo Flora Festival 2025, organised by LC in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation and the Department of Federal Territories (JWP), is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors over its five-day run from July 26 to 30 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex.
'We are targeting not only domestic visitors but also tourists from the Borneo region, including Kalimantan and Brunei. This is our flagship tourism event of the year, and we are optimistic about a strong turnout,' he said.
Mohd Sukuran added that the festival will showcase a wide variety of flower and plant species from across the country.
'Labuan Corporation is also taking the initiative to enhance the overall beauty and ambience of the Borneo Flora Festival by planting a total of 250,000 polybags of flowering plants, as part of its broader environmental and tourism enhancement strategy,' he said.
He also emphasised that the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 aims to position Labuan as a key tourism hub while creating economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and plant growers.
'This is not just about beautifying Labuan, it's about boosting the local economy, promoting sustainability, and making Labuan a must-visit eco-tourism destination,' he said. – Bernama

Public urged to use Bas.My for subsidised bus service continuity

ALOR SETAR: The Ministry of Transport is urging the public to utilise the stage bus service to ensure its long-term sustainability. Introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, the service is being rolled out in phases this year with significant government funding. Transport Minister Anthony Loke stressed the need for strong ridership to justify continued financial support. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to keep funding this, I need data proving its benefits. If people don't use it despite affordable fares, securing future allocations will be tough,' he said after launching the Kota Setar service. The federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years for 13 SBST routes in Kedah. Since its phased launch on June 1, the Kota Setar service has seen around 30,000 monthly users, with projections reaching 40,000 by month-end. Loke explained that higher ridership reduces per-passenger costs, making the subsidy more efficient. 'The annual cost remains RM15.7 million regardless of passenger numbers. More users mean better value for the government's investment.' On safety concerns following a recent fatal accident involving a bus, Loke clarified that investigations are ongoing. 'Police will determine if negligence occurred. All operators must comply with strict safety rules, including speed limits and driver training.' - Bernama

He said essential building materials such as cement, aggregate (gravel) and sand remain zero-rated under the sales tax to help reduce the burden on developers and ensure the continuity of infrastructure projects. "Selected business-to-business (B2B) activities are subject to certain conditions. For instance, main contractors are subject to SST, but not to subcontractors earning below the threshold of RM1.5 million,' he said during an oral question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. Ahmad was responding to a question from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) regarding the categories of construction projects exempted from SST, as well as the ministry's steps to ensure that existing projects are not affected by its implementation. In line with the government's commitment to implement SST fairly and effectively, he said, companies and contractors that carry out contracts that do not allow for review will be granted a one-year exemption, subject to terms and conditions. "This incentive is part of the government's measures to ensure the construction industry has sufficient time to adjust the system, streamline the registration process and obtain accurate clarification on the implementation of SST," he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad said that there has been no discussion to increase the threshold value for registration of taxable services for the construction sector from RM1.5 million to RM3 million. He was responding to a supplementary question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) regarding the industry's proposal for the threshold value for registration of SST taxable services to be increased from RM1.5 million to RM3 million, particularly for construction and rental and leasing categories. - BERNAMA More Like This

KESUMA Brings AI Into TVET To Tackle IR4.0 Challenges

GEORGE TOWN, July 28 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) is committed to empowering the development of the country's human capital by boosting the offering of skills-based courses that can help workers prepare for the demands of the current and future job markets, in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0). Its Minister, Steven Sim, said this included reviewing the syllabus for skills courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions under its supervision to incorporate elements of artificial intelligence (AI). 'We will look at the current subject syllabi to include at least basic skills in handling AI technology. 'This is so that even if our trainees do not go on to work directly in tech-related fields, at least they have basic knowledge because AI encompasses all sectors of employment and life,' he told reporters after officiating the opening ceremony of the 52nd Asian Regional Training and Development Organisation (ARTDO) Conference here today. He said that there are currently 33 Industrial Training Institutes (ILPs) supervised by KESUMA under TVET, adding that cooperation will also be expanded with other TVET institutions and private training providers to strengthen the delivery of technology-based training. He also hopes to be able to further expand short-term courses and AI literacy programmes to the general public, particularly housewives, to ensure all segments of society are prepared to face technological transformation. He said that current technological developments, including AI, digitalisation and the green economy, are growing rapidly, having a significant impact on the country's job market. To address these challenges, Sim said KESUMA has prepared a report at the end of last year to study the impact of future technology on Malaysia's workforce. According to him, the report was developed based on input from industry players across 10 main economic sectors and serves as a crucial guide for the government in formulating policies for skills training and future workforce planning.
