BBC News6 days ago
Third-tier Alloa Athletic - along with Premiership sides Falkirk and Kilmarnock, and Championship duo Partick Thistle and St Johnstone - have secured progress to the Premier Sports Cup last 16 after winning their groups.Alloa scored a late winner as they came from behind to win 3-2 and overtake Championship hosts Airdrieonians at the top of Group C.The Diamonds' defeat also meant they miss out on being one of three best runners-up to progress along with Livingston and Greenock Morton.Dunfermline Athletic are currently third best but will miss out should St Mirren win or draw with a penalty shoot-out bonus point at home to Ayr United in Sunday's final group game.
Group A
Goals from midfielders Dylan Tait and Scott Arfield eased Falkirk into the lead at home to fourth-tier Spartans.Full-back Calvin Miller grabbed a double after the break to secure a comfortable 4-0 win.Third-tier Cove Rangers were in the running to be one of the best runners-up when Mitch Megginson gave them an early lead away to Queen's Park, but a Michael Ruth penalty and Josh Fowler's late winner ended their hopes.
Group B
Goals from Robbie Crawford, Logan Chalmers and Ben Stanway put Thistle on the way to a 3-1 victory in their group decider away to Championship rivals Ross County. The hosts hit back late on through Jordan White but miss out on the last 16 despite finishing runners-up.Meanwhile, fourth-tier Stranraer beat League 1 visitors Queen of the South in their local derby thanks to Aaron Quigg's second-half strike.
Group C
Owen Foster headed Alloa into a half-time lead in Airdrie, but Aidan Wilson and Euan Henderson's penalty put the hosts in the driving seat.Scott Taggart's spot-kick tied the scores and would have sent both sides through to the last 16, but Steven Buchanan fired the visitors' winner with a minute remaining.Premiership side Dundee ended a disappointing group campaign with a 5-0 hammering of third-tier visitors Montrose.A Simon Murray penalty - the captain's first of the season - set Steven Pressley's side on their way, the striker added his second after the break and late goals from Clark Robertson, Ryan Astley and Luke Graham completed the rout.
Group D
Scott Shepherd's early goal was enough to give League 2 hosts Forfar Athletic victory over Championship visitors Arbroath in their local derby in a game that was otherwise a dead rubber.
Group E
With Heart of Midlothian already qualified as group winners, Dunfermline were seeking a big win to secure second spot and improve their goal difference. They struggled to break down fourth-tier visitors Stirling Albion, but Andrew Tod broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining and Rory MacLeod's stoppage-time penalty ensured that Neil Lennon's side have a chance of a last-16 place depending on the result between St Mirren and Ayr on Sunday.Meanwhile, striker Ally Roy gave fourth-tier Dumbarton victory over League 1 hosts Hamilton Academical in a meeting of two sides relegated last season.
Group F
Reghan Tumilty's third-minute opener and a red card for visiting goalkeeper Tom Ritchie shortly set St Johnstone up for an 8-0 thrashing of League 2 visitors Elgin City.Makenzie Kirk and Jamie Gullan both grabbed doubles, with fellow striker Uche Ikpeazu, and midfielders Sam Stanton and Sven Sprangler scoring the other goals.Inverness Caledonian Thistle started the afternoon with a chance of winning the group but were thrashed 5-1 by Championship hosts Raith Rovers, with midfielder Dylan Easton grabbing a hat-trick.Jack Hamilton and Remi Savage scored the Kirkcaldy side's other goals, with David Wotherspoon providing the third-tier visitors' consolation.
Group G
With Motherwell already through as group winners, Morton and Clyde met in Greenock to decide the runners-up spot.Goals from Kerr Robertson, Tomi Adeloye, from the penalty spot, and Jackson Longridge gave the Championship host victory as Clyde suffered their first defeat over 90 minutes.Ross Taylor's first-half goal was enough to give hosts Stenhousemuir victory over League 1 rivals Peterhead.
Group H
Three teams started the day with a chance to top Group H, but it was Kilmarnock who prevailed thanks to a 4-0 defeat of League 2 champions East Fife.Crosses from Jamie Brandan set up goals for summer striker arrivals Marcus Dackers and Djenairo Daniels before the 18-year-old wing-back Ben Brannan contributed two fine finishes to end the visitors' hopes of progress.Premiership rivals Livingston secured their spot as one of the best runners-up with a 6-0 thrashing of Kelty Hearts. Two goals from Robbie Muirhead and others from Andy Winter, debutant Adam Montgomery, Stevie May and Shane Blaney ensured David Martindale's side a place in Sunday's draw.

‘No words to describe it' – Diogo Dalot hails late Diogo Jota and heartwarming way Liverpool star will be remembered

MANCHESTER United defender Diogo Dalot says he is still haunted by the 'indescribable tragedy' of the death of Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota. Dalot and United skipper Bruno Fernandes were among the global stars who joined Jota's Liverpool club-mates at his funeral last month. 3 And the Old Trafford defender admitted he gets permanent reminders of his dead pal on a daily basis. Dalot said: 'It's tough to talk about it, but it was a tough week for me, for every teammate that played with him. 'I cannot imagine what the family went through. I had the opportunity to see them and it's just tough. 'There aren't any words to describe it when such a tragedy happens like that. 'It hits you. I felt that everybody, the whole world felt it, even if they didn't know him personally. It's just a tragedy.' He added: 'Every time I go on the pitch, I think of it. 'Even today I saw shirts with his name. He will be remembered forever and he deserves that because he was a great man, a great teammate. 'Diogo was someone that I would say was a role model for me because I always like to see a player's behaviour when they play and when you don't play. 'He was always the guy that was thinking and putting the team first. 'So I will always remember him like that. Hopefully he's at peace now and resting where he is.' Darwin Nunez performs tragic Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota's celebration after scoring in first game since his death Dalot believes that Jota's death cut through to all football fans, regardless of their club affiliations. Supporters of United and Everton were among those laying flowers at Anfield in the days after the striker's death and Dalot added: 'He could have played for any team. 'When you're talking about the personal side, I don't look to the shirts that he represents. 'Obviously, I played a lot of years with him in the national team and I spent some time with him. 3 'So you create that connection, you create some memories. 'That's what I want to keep, the good memories. It's how I want to remember him.'

Andy Murray lands shock new business deal as tennis legend takes on new role after splitting from Novak Djokovic

SIR ANDY MURRAY has landed a shock new business deal with a POTATO company. The tennis legend has taken on a new role at the Scottish spud company Albert Bartlett. 2 2 Murray, 38, will be the new face of the brand after signing a long-term partnership to market its products. It comes after his split from coaching Novak Djokovic in May, just weeks before Wimbledon. Albert Bartlett is based in Airdrie in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Murray is believed to have familiarised himself with their potatoes more than ten years ago. The brand is also a long-term supplier for the five-star Cromlix hotel owned by Murray near Dunblane. Albert Bartlett is family-owned and was founded back in 1948. A statement over the partnership said it brings "two Scottish-born British icons with shared community vision and family values [together].' Murray will be "encouraging the nation to enjoy a healthy lifestyle through sport and a balanced diet'. He will be promoting both the frozen and chilled potato product ranges. Murray said: "I was lucky during my early playing days to have access to the kit and facilities required to play and develop, and as my career progressed, to have the best diet and training advice available. Carlos Alcaraz makes it through to Wimbledon second week then throws down huge challenge to Sir Andy Murray "I am excited to partner with Albert Bartlett to showcase the importance of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle to communities across the UK. "I hope the project inspires people to play and enjoy sport throughout their lives, at whatever level they are able. Chief executive Alex Bartlett added: 'Andy is someone who has engaged and inspired his home nation and sports fans around the world, delivering that long-awaited British [male] Wimbledon win, not only once, but twice. "Along with his US Open win and two Olympic golds. 'So, who better to engage the nation again and help us serve up the inspiration and resource required to get the nation active and nourished with tasty home-grown produce?' It is not the first Scottish brand Murray has teamed up with. Last month, he became the inaugural brand ambassador of the iconic Walker's Shortbread. Andy Murray's career timeline SIR Andy Murray is Great Britain's most successful tennis player of the Open era. After breaking through in 2005 to reach the Wimbledon third round at 18, the Scot was British No1 by the following year. In 2008 he reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, only to fall to Roger Federer in straight sets. Two more final defeats at the Australian Open to Federer and Novak Djokovic followed in 2010 and 2011 before heartbreak at Wimbledon in 2012. Despite taking the first set against Federer, he fell 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 in front of a home crowd before breaking into tears on Centre Court. But a month later on the same court he beat the Swiss legend to earn Team GB a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics. And weeks after that he broke his Grand Slam duck at the fifth attempt, beating Djokovic in five sets in the US Open final. In 2013, following another Australian Open final loss, Murray beat Djokovic in straight sets to become the first British man in 77 years to win the Wimbledon title. Three more losing Grand Slam finals followed, at the 2015 and 2016 Australian Opens and the 2016 French Open. But in his third Grand Slam final of 2016, Murray won Wimbledon again with a straight sets victory over Canadian Milos Raonic. He followed it up with his second Olympic gold medal, beating Juan Martin del Potro in a four-hour epic in the final in Rio de Janeiro. Later in 2016 Murray became world No1 - the first British man to do so in history. Over his career Murray reached 11 Grand Slam finals, winning three. He won two Olympic golds and a silver (in the mixed doubles alongside Laura Robson). He finishes his career with 46 titles and over £50million in earnings, making him the fourth all-time leader in earnings. His final match was at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he lost in the quarter-final of the men's doubles at Roland Garros to USA pair Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz.

Real Madrid's request to postpone LaLiga opener denied, report says

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Real Madrid will begin their LaLiga campaign with a home game against Osasuna as scheduled after Spain's federation (RFEF) rejected their appeal to postpone the August 19 fixture on Thursday, local media reported. Real had requested a longer rest period and pre-season after playing in the Club World Cup in the U.S., where they lost to Paris St Germain in the semi-finals on July 9, according to the report. Reuters has contacted the RFEF and Real for comment. An RFEF judge ruled that in order to preserve the integrity of the competition only a case of force majeure would warrant a change to the official calendar, and that Real's case did not justify an alteration, Europa Press news agency reported. "Finally, it should be added that although the requesting club claims to have the agreement of the opposing party, CA Osasuna, there is no record of this entity having responded to the request made by this judge," the sole judge was quoted as saying in his ruling by the Europa Press.
