‘F1' Is Pretty Good, Better Than Most Hollywood Motorsports Movies

The new Formula 1 movie, "F1," which opened June 27 and stars Brad Pitt, is pretty good. Most Hollywood movies about motorsports leave much to be desired, some of them almost comical.
The action on tracks like England's Silverstone, Italy's Monza and Japan's Suzuka, is thrilling and, in some ways, representative of F1 racing. And the list of authentic folks who helped with the movie, including seven-time Formula One World Driving Champion Lewis Hamilton, is impressive. There's even a short appearance by F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart.
The film opens with a sequence at Daytona International Speedway. Aging racer Sonny Hayes (played by Pitt) is participating in the Rolex 24 Hours Of Daytona. I have driven on that track many times, giving rides with the NASCAR Racing Experience as recently as last week. I know pretty much everything about the asphalt surface, including where the seams are. Right away, it was obvious it was shot for real at the speedway.
After winning at Daytona, Pitt is asked by an old friend and former Lotus racing partner Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), now the owner of the struggling APXGT race team, to return to F1 as a forty-something-year-old man. Pitt had left F1 three decades years earlier after a crash at the Spanish Grand Prix that nearly killed him.

When Pitt agrees reluctantly to return, there is tension between him and his cocky younger F1 teammate, Joshua Pierce (Damson Idris) as you might imagine. It takes Pitt awhile to get his chops back and to earn the respect of his team, but he does after wrecking a few cars and mastering the complex new car technology.
Eventually, an understanding develops between the teammates to work together to win races. As unorthodox as their methods are on the track, they nevertheless help propel the team from back-markers to running mid-pack. This reckless approach may have worked in the movie, but, in reality, AXGPT would have been kicked out of F1 early in the season for such antics. Along the way, a romance develops between Pitt and crew technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon). Had to, right?
I won't ruin the ending, but it's the typical 'come from behind" Hollywood storyline that the audience knows all too well. It's immensely entertaining, though, what with unexpected plot twists in upper management, whether to sell the team or not at the end of the season, Pitt's gambling, Mexico's Baja 1000 and more.
As for the driving, Pitt looks fairly solid. Hamilton has even gone on record to confirm that. But know this: Pitt is not driving real F1 cars, as implied in the flick, just gussied up F2 cars, still formidable in their own right.

Formula 1, by far the most popular motorsports series in the world, has never really caught on in the U.S. since American legend Mario Andretti won the Formula One World Driving Championship in 1978. F1 plays fourth fiddle to IndyCar, NASCAR and the NHRA despite staging major races at Indianapolis, Austin, Miami and Las Vegas. 'F1' the movie should help narrow the gap. I know I picked up a few things watching it, and that makes me more interested in F1 as a series.
Andretti seems to agree. 'It's a very entertaining movie with great casting,' he says. 'It's an excellent promotion for Formula 1.'

Djokovic sets another record at Wimbledon and jokes about sipping margaritas on beach with rivals

Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] LONDON (AP) — Novak Djokovic added another record to his name by reaching Wimbledon's third round for a 19th time with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 win over Dan Evans on Centre Court on Wednesday. It was Djokovic's 99th match win at Wimbledon overall, and the 19 third-round appearances put him one ahead of Roger Federer for most by any man in the Open Era. It's hardly the most prestigious record for Djokovic, whose 24 Grand Slam titles — including seven at Wimbledon — are the most by a male player. But he could at least use it to poke fun at his new, and much younger, main rivals. 'Nineteen times, that's a great stat,' said the 38-year-old Djokovic. 'That's probably almost as much as Sinner and Alcaraz have years in their lives.' Well, not quite. Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Djokovic in the last two Wimbledon finals, is 22, while No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner — who was playing later on Centre Court — is 23. The growing rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz — especially in the wake of their five-set final at the French Open last month — has helped tennis move on from the era of the Big Three, where Djokovic is the last man standing after Federer and Rafael Nadal retired. But Djokovic is too focused on proving he can still win another Slam to sit back and reflect on everything he has accomplished at Wimbledon. 'I don't pause to reflect, to be honest. I don't have time,' Djokovic said in an on-court interview. 'I would like to. But I think that's going to come probably when I set the racket aside and then sip margarita on the beach with Federer and Nadal and just reflect on our rivalry and everything.' Against Evans, Djokovic failed to convert his first nine break points in the first set. But once he got the breakthrough for a 5-3 lead — raising both arms in the air as if to say 'finally' — he went five-for-six on break points the rest of the way. 'You have these kinds of days where everything goes your way,' said Djokovic, who didn't face a break point of his own until the final game. 'Everything flows.' What else happened Thursday at Wimbledon? No. 7-seeded Mirra Andreeva and No. 10 Emma Navarro both advanced in straight sets. The 18-year-old Andreeva earned a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, and Navarro cruised past Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-2. No. 11 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, beat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1. In the men's draw, No. 11 Alex de Minaur ousted 115th-ranked Arthur Cazaux 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 and 19th-seeded Gregor Dimitrov outlasted Corentin Moutet 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Who plays Friday at the All England Club? Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, faces 35-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff on Centre Court, before No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faces British home favorite Emma Raducanu in the late match. Australian Open champion Madison Keys faces Laura Siegemund on No. 2 Court. ___ AP tennis:

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mercedes has shared an emotional throwback to the 2024 British Grand Prix, where seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton secured his first victory since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The race win marked an emotional moment for the Briton as he broke a two-year drought to regain his winning form, a journey that was emotionally and physically challenging. Hamilton's winning spree ended after he lost his potential eighth world title to Max Verstappen in the 2021 season finale under controversial circumstances. The historic win at Silverstone was the perfect scenario Hamilton could have asked for, since it was his last home race with Mercedes, a team with which he celebrated huge success, securing six drivers' titles and contributing to the outfit's eight constructors' championships starting in 2014. Race winner Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes celebrates on the podium during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 07, 2024 in Northampton, the return of the British GP this weekend, Mercedes uploaded photos of the iconic race weekend from last year and the celebrations that followed. The post read: "The #BritishGP 2024? Nothing short of memories that last a lifetime. See you again this weekend, Silverstone." The 2025 British GP marks Mercedes' first race without Hamilton, while the 40-year-old driver steps into Silverstone for the first time in red racing overalls. Mercedes is celebrating the launch of the AMG GT XX concept car this weekend, and as a result, it has unveiled new racing overalls for George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The design remains unchanged, except for Mercedes-AMG's logo, which appears in "sunset beam orange." Additionally, the W16 F1 car will also sport an orange Mercedes logo. Addressing the updated livery for this weekend, Mercedes said in a statement: "It's all to do with our celebration of the three-pointed star's past, present, and future, as F1 gets set to celebrate its 75th anniversary, at the home of the very first F1 World Championship race in 1950. "The future will be seen with the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, Mercedes-AMG's pioneering technology programme, that recently launched at Mercedes-AMG's Affalterbach headquarters with George, Kimi and Valtteri. "A concept car that offers insight into the first series-production model based on high performance will be on display at Silverstone. The concept car's eye-catching sunset beam orange livery is inspired by the revolutionary Mercedes C111 vehicles of the 1960s and 1970s. "The sunset beam orange accents will feature on the W16 including the famous three-pointed stars on its nose and engine cover, driver overalls, and both George and Kimi will run special helmets incorporating the colour in celebration of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX launch. "The high-voltage battery in the CONCEPT AMG GT XX is a completely new development. It benefits from all the experience from the AMG ONE and Formula 1 as well as the knowledge of the best engineers from Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in Brixworth."
