DMK MP Tiruchi Siva moves Rule 267 notice in Parliament to discuss ongoing voter list revision in Bihar
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Tiruchi Siva on Friday morning moved a notice under Rule 267, demanding suspension of house business in upper house of Parliament to discuss the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise being carried out by the Election Commission (EC) in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
In the notice, the Rajya Sabha MP said that the SIR drive in Bihar raises concerns about the disenfranchisement of citizens and threatens universal adult franchise in the country.
"I seek your consent under Rule 267 of the 'Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States' to suspend Rules 15, 23, and 51, and any other business listed under any other Rule in the revised List of Business, for August 1 2025, to discuss the following issue of urgent importance: To discuss the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, which raises concerns about the disenfranchisement of citizens and threatens universal adult franchise in the country," the notice read.Earlier in the day, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh moved a Suspension of Business notice in the Upper House on Friday and demanded a discussion on the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by the United States.He gave the notice to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, under Rule 267 (Notice of Motion for Suspension of Rules) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).
He wrote, "I would like to draw your attention to a very important and serious issue that is linked to India's economic, trade and diplomatic policy. By the United States of America, a tariff of 25% has been imposed on India's major exports in sectors such as auto components, electronics, jewellery, textiles and processed food from August 2025."Sanjay Singh added, "In addition, economic punitive action has been taken on India's defence and energy relations with Russia, which has not only caused massive economic instability but has also seen widespread panic among domestic and international investors."Rajya Sabha is set to take up significant legislative and procedural business, including a statutory resolution seeking the extension of President's Rule in Manipur and the consideration of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025.Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution for approval of the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025, according to the List of Business issued by the Rajya Sabha.The President's rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, days after N Biren Singh resigned from the Chief Minister's position.Both houses of Parliament have witnessed heated exchanges and adjournments during the initial days of the Monsoon Session, but are expected to proceed with key legislative business today. The session is scheduled to continue until August 21.

ECI suspends four West Bengal electoral officers for voter list tamperings, orders probe
NEW DELHI: Election Commission of India on Tuesday suspended four West Bengal government officers for allegedly including wrongful names in the voters list and compromising data security, officials said. The poll panel also asked the West Bengal Chief Secretary to lodge FIRs against the four officers under provisions of the election laws. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated action against four West Bengal election officials following a Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) report exposing unauthorized inclusions in electoral rolls of Baruipur Purba and Moyna constituencies. In its letter to the Chief Secretary - a copy obtained by this newspaper - the ECI cited the CEO's findings of irregularities committed by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant EROs. The officers - Debottam Dutta Choudhury (ERO), Tathagata Mondal (AERO), Biplab Sarkar (ERO), and Sudipta Das (AERO) were responsible for preparing, revising, and correcting electoral rolls. The ECI directed that "suitable disciplinary proceedings" be initiated against them and FIRs lodged for actions amounting to "criminal misconduct." An FIR was also recommended against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. The discrepancies surfaced during a sample check of voter application forms (Form 6) by the West Bengal Election Commission. The ECI noted that the officers violated due procedure, warranting penalties under Section 32(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Following the CEO's orders, the District Election Officer (DEO) must form a senior officials' team to scrutinice all voter forms processed in the past year and submit a report by August 14, 2025. The ECI instructed the Chief Secretary to ensure strict compliance and submit an action-taken report "at the earliest." The move comes amid Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's opposition to the ECI's push for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's electoral rolls.

Gujarat's Keshod Airport to facilitate operations of larger AB-320 aircraft by January 2027: Govt
The Keshod Airport in Junagadh will be able to facilitate operations of AB-320 type aircraft by January 2027, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Tuesday in its response to an unstarred question by a Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh. Parimal Nathwani, the Director of Corporate Affairs at Reliance Industries Limited, and a member of the upper house of Parliament from the YSRCP, on Tuesday asked a series of unstarred questions about the Keshod Airport that were answered by Murlidhar Mohol, the MoS for Civil Aviation. In his response to questions regarding infrastructure upgradation at the airport, Mohol, in a written reply, said: 'The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken the extension of the runway at Keshod Airport in Gujarat, to a length of 2500 metres to facilitate the operation of AB-320 type of aircraft. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 190.558 crore and the timeline for completion of the project has been set at 18 project is underway with no reported delays. The projected date of completion of the project is January 2027.' Replying to a question regarding the terminal building upgrade and its capacity, the ministry replied, 'The AAI has undertaken the development of Keshod Airport in Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs 364 crore which includes the New Terminal Building at a cost of Rs 142.17 Crore. The new terminal building, spanning 6,500 square meters, is designed to handle a peak hour capacity of 400 departing and 400 arriving passengers simultaneously. The tender for construction of the new terminal building has been floated, and the timeline for completion of the project is 15 months from the date of the award of the work.' Talking about the reasons behind him asking these questions, Nathwani said, 'By upgrading Keshod Airport to allow operation of large-body aircraft, it will become easier for wildlife enthusiasts across the globe to travel to Gir National Park to see the only remaining Asiatic Lions in the world. At the same time, the Somnath temple owns a special place amongst the twelve jyotirlings, and Keshod Airport will facilitate devotees of Lord Shiva from India and abroad to visit this famous temple with much greater ease.' Other questions asked by Nathwani related to flights at the airport were available on the Rajya Sabha website. According to the site, in a response to questions on the current flight schedule at Keshod Airport, the ministry said, 'Presently, there are no scheduled flight operations from Keshod Airport.' Regarding flights cancelled since January 2025, the reply stated, 'Since January 2025, 29 flights of Alliance Air on Ahmedabad-Keshod-Diu sector and 23 flights of Alliance Air on the Mumbai-Keshod-Mumbai sector were cancelled due to aircraft issues.' Nathwani also wanted to know about the steps taken by the DGCA 'to bring back the lost confidence of people to fly subsequent to the tragic incident of plane crash in Ahmedabad'. 'Post the tragic crash in Ahmedabad, DGCA has ordered enhanced safety inspection of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet and carried out heightened surveillance across various regions in India to ensure safe operations of aircraft. DGCA has also issued General Safety Circular 01 of 2025 for a comprehensive special audit to assess the aviation ecosystem and strengthen aviation safety architecture. The government has reviewed the safety practices of all major airlines and airports,' the ministry replied.

If Stalin has given good administration, then why hold outreach programmes: Palaniswami
Had Chief Minister M.K. Stalin given good governance since 2021, there would not have been any need to organise outreach campaigns like Ungaludan Stalin and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin. These camps are being held now to hoodwink the people, seven months ahead of the Assembly election, AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said. Addressing a meeting as part of his Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagaththai Meetpom campaign in Tenkasi, Mr. Palaniswami said the AIADMK government opened over 2,000 Amma Mini Clinics across Tamil Nadu with a doctor, a nurse, and an assistant in the areas where the poor lived. Since the DMK government closed these mini clinics, the AIADMK would again open 4,000 them on returning to power in 2026. After closing down the 'Amma Mini Clinics', Mr. Stalin had launched Nalam Kaakkum Stalin one-day health screening camps after being in office for four years. Apart from opening 'Amma Mini Clinics', 254 new Primary Health Centres were opened by AIADMK government besides upgrading 168 PHCs each with 30 beds with sufficient number of doctors. 'If Mr. Stalin, who collected petitions in the boxes during the run-up for 2021 Assembly elections, had addressed all those complaints during these four years, there would have been no need to organise Ungaludan Stalin and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin dramas now, which are enacted to hoodwink the people ahead of the next Assembly elections,' Mr. Palaniswami alleged. After the AIADMK, by giving laptops and other assistances to the students, increased the Gross Enrolment Ratio to 54%, the highest in India, in 2019, the Stalin-led DMK government stopped giving free laptops to the students. 'We gave 52.35 lakh free laptops at an estimate to ₹7,300 crore to students. We'll give you free laptops again when we return to power,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami read out the DMK's 2021 poll promises for Tenkasi district — a law college in Tenkasi, textile park in Sankarankovil, government polytechnic in Kadayanallur, cold storage for fruits and vegetables at Puliyangudi, Speccial Economic Zone in Tenkasi, Government Medical College in Tenkasi, mango squash factory, Ramanadhi — Jambunadhi linking, government forest college in Tenkasi, and asked the people: 'Has Mr. Stalin fulfilled any of these promises?' The former Chief Minister promised the voters that the Tenkasi Collectorate, which is yet to be inaugurated after being built at an estimate of ₹119 crore, would be opened once the AIADMK comes to power.
