Disney Scales Back ‘Snow White' Hollywood Premiere Amid Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot Controversies

Yahoo11-03-2025
Disney is hosting a Hollywood premiere of 'Snow White' on March 15, but the studio won't be rolling out a robust red carpet like it usually does.
The afternoon festivities will include a pre-party and screening at the El Capitan Theatre with titular star Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, expected to attend. However, the red carpet will not include the dozens of media outlets usually invited by Disney to interview the cast and creatives at its premieres.

Instead, coverage will be limited to photographers and a house crew.
The studio did not comment for this story, but the scaled back plans come amid controversies surrounding the Marc Webb-directed film, which hits theaters March 21.
Some toxic Disney fans questioned Snow White being played by Zegler when her casting was announced because she is a Latina actor The 'West Side Story' star also faced backlash when she called the 1937 original 'dated' because the prince 'literally stalks Snow White.'
In an interview with Variety at D23 two years ago, Zegler said, 'She's not going to be saved by the prince. She's not going to be dreaming about true love. She's dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.'
Peter Dinklage spoke out about the movie's portrayal of little people for perpetuating negative stereotypes. 'Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback,' he said on the 'WTF With Mark Maron' podcast in January 2024. 'They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you're still telling the story of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' Take a step back and look at what you're doing there.'
Shortly following Dinklage's remarks, Disney said in a statement to 'Good Morning America,' 'To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.'
Zegler reasons that the backlash to the film is due to the 'passion' for the original film. 'I interpret people's sentiments towards this film as passion,' she said in an interview in the March issue of Vogue Mexico. 'What an honor to be a part of something that people feel so passionately about. We're not always going to agree with everyone who surrounds us and all we can do is our best.' (Quotes were independently translated from Spanish to English by Variety).
World politics have also come into play. Zegler has promoted 'free Palestine' on social media. At the same time. Gadot, who is Israeli, has become an outspoken supporter of Israel on social media as well as in a passionate speech she delivered on March 4 when she was honored at the Anti-Defamation League's annual summit in New York City. 'Never did I imagine that on the streets of the United States, and different cities around the world, we would see people not condemning Hamas, but celebrating, justifying and cheering on a massacre of Jews,' she said, in part.
Gadot has stayed away from politics in the past, but has said she felt she needed to speak up after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
In February, several dozen pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside the Hollywood premiere of 'Captain America: Brave New World' and called for a boycott of the film over its inclusion of the Israeli superhero Ruth Bat-Seraph, aka Sabra, played by Israeli actress Shira Haas.
MAGA supporters also blasted Zegler for her reaction to Donald Trump's reelection when she posted on Instagram, in part, 'May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.' She apologized for her remarks two days later.
'Snow White' publicity plans have already included Gadot and Zegler presenting together at the Oscars followed by Zegler making a promotional appearance in Tokyo. Zegler and Webb will also visit Spain for the movie followed by Zegler hosting a screening in New York City for the Broadway community.
Gadot was on 'Good Morning America' on Monday in support of the movie.
The official trailer for the film has garnered 11.8 million views on YouTube since its debut three months ago.

Everything we know about a Squid Game US spin off

Just when we were all still reeling from the ending of Squid Game, the series decided to throw us one final curveball in the show's final moments. Now in California, the Front Man, AKA Hwang In-ho, notices two people playing ddakji in an alleyway. But when the camera turns around, we see that it's none other than Cate Blanchett! With a huge starlet making a rare appearance in the show, it must mean that something big is happening, right? Well, there's been some hints about what's to come next in the future of Squid Game including a US spin-off. So what can we expect? Here's everything you need to know about Squid Game's US spin-off. Back in October 2024, Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed on the streamer with David Fincher at the helm of the project. Things have been pretty quiet since then and fans have been wondering if it was still in the works. Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke with Variety and said that Cate Blanchett's cameo is actually not a a direct link to the project. "Actually no, not at all. It's not related to that. All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that's all that was to it. Honestly, I haven't heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game," he said. "I have heard the rumors of course though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3." Well, there's still another season of Squid Game: The Challenge to look forward to, so there's definitely more to come from the Squid Game universe. But in terms of direct spin-offs, Hwang Dong-hyuk says that he's open to what comes next. "I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never," he told Entertainment Weekly. He also noted that he already has an idea for a spin-off, but it's definitely not what fans might have in mind. "I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters," Hwang said. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future." Will it actually come true? We'll have to wait and see! Until then, we have to hope the rumors of a US spin-off are true so we can see just what kind of recruiter Cate Blanchett really is like. Squid Game season 1-3 is available to stream on Netflix.

True North, strong and foamy: Port Colborne to bring Canada Day bash to waterfront

Port Colborne is gearing up for a jam-packed Canada Day celebration that promises something for all ages, including foam parties, face painting, fireworks and country rock by the canal. Organized by Port Colborne Optimist Club and supported by the city, Canada Day in the Park will return to H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park on July 1. Festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. with a Mad Science demonstration, setting the tone for a day filled with interactive entertainment. The Optimist Club has lined up a roster of entertainment, including bounce houses, face painting, a birds of prey exhibit and, back by popular demand, a foam party. People can also look forward to meeting beloved Disney characters who will be roaming the park throughout the day for high-fives and photos. A vendor fair will take over parts of the park with handmade crafts and artisanal products, while a variety of food trucks and local vendors will help keep guests fuelled with snacks and summer treats. 'This event really brings the community together,' the city said in a statement. 'It's a great way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian — fun, family and time spent outdoors.' Once the sun starts to set, celebrations will move to the waterfront. At 7:30 p.m., local country rock band The Blackstones will take the stage at the corner of West and Sugarloaf streets. The evening concert is free to attend, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy the show along the Welland Canal. To cap the day off, the sky above West Street will light up with a fireworks display to begin about 10 p.m. The launch is dependent on seaway traffic, but organizers are hopeful for a show that wraps up the day with a bang. Early ‘Superman' Reviews Keep Breaking Embargo

Superman It's the biggest film of the summer (probably?), but a number of critics and websites are a little too eager to share their thoughts about Superman, and even if it's just a few outlets, some fans are using it to shape a narrative around the film before it's out. The actual embargo is up tomorrow. Over the course of the last week, a few outlets have broken this review embargo, with The Daily Beast's hyper-negative review titled The Terrible New 'Superman' Movie Is the Final Nail in the Grave for the Superhero Genre being circulated widely even if it was up for barely five minutes. That was in contrast to The Sunday Times, which posted a very positive review of Superman, calling it a 'triumph.' Then we have some embargo breaking from the likes of Variety without it being a full review, with a critic there implying that Amazon's medium-rated Heads of State was more entertaining than Superman. There have been a large number of 'hints' about the film from those who have seen early previews, of which there have been many. Most do not seem to realize that even saying things like 'I'm not going to say anything, but I can't wait for you guys to see this!' is still technically breaking the embargo. I've also seen insiders push back against the negative reviews saying, 'This is not what I've heard at all' based on other feedback from those who had seen the film. It's not clear what may have happened with any of the outlets that published reviews early, but it can often lead to consequences with the studio like not being invited to early previews in the future. Shaping the narrative about this film, in particular, is significant because this is a hugely important project for WB and DC, with this being the first real entry into the James Gunn-led DCU, with this being his project specifically and setting the tone for the rest of the universe. But with so few outlets chiming in with these leaks, it's too early to tell. However, the idea that Gunn was going to make an awful Superman movie does not match up with his history of comic book productions across Marvel and DC. We have: Superman This is why Gunn seemed like a safe pick to run DC Films, given that he just has not missed with his Marvel and DC projects to date. It seems unlikely that Superman will be reviewed negatively overall, but even if it's below his other films, it stands to reason that the film A) is likely to still be a huge box office hit and B) may be beloved by audiences who increasingly don't really care what critics say (see the recent Jurassic Park: Rebirth). It's still early in the day, and frankly, I would be surprised if no more reviews leaked before tomorrow afternoon when the actual embargo is supposed to lift. I'll add those to the list if that happens and will have a real review round-up tomorrow. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
