team.
The selection of Yuvraj Singh, who later became the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 ODI World Cup, was not a straightforward decision for the national selectors.
Kirsten and then-captain
MS Dhoni
played crucial roles in ensuring Yuvraj's inclusion in the team.

"Thank goodness we picked him because it was flipping close, he was. It was not a slam-dunk selection. The selectors kind of debated around the 15 players. I was very keen to have him in the team as was Dhoni, because of the experience that he brought to the group. And look at the World Cup he ended up having," Kirsten told rediff.com.

Do you believe mental conditioning helped Yuvraj Singh in the World Cup?
Definitely, it was crucial
Maybe, but not entirely
Not really, performance comes from practice
Unsure, need more information
"I was always very fond of Yuvraj. We had this kind of great relationship where like, he used to frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, but I just loved him. He was good. I just want him to be scoring runs all the time because when I watch him bat, it's just like amazing to watch. But there was a journey he had to walk and credit to Paddy (Upton)."
Mental conditioning and strategic leadership coach
Paddy Upton
worked extensively with Yuvraj to prepare him for the tournament, which preceded his battle with cancer.
"Paddy did a lot of work with Yuvi to get him ready for that World Cup. Yuvi himself made some key decisions around getting himself prepared and ready for the World Cup," he added.
After experiencing a quiet period in 2010, Yuvraj delivered an outstanding performance in the World Cup, scoring 362 runs with a strike rate exceeding 86 and taking 15 wickets.
Tracing Moeen Ali's steps in Birmingham
His remarkable achievements included a century against West Indies in Chennai and a combined five-wicket haul and half-century against Ireland.
Yuvraj's crucial half-century in Ahmedabad helped eliminate defending champions Australia in the quarter-finals.
He continued his all-round performance by taking two wickets in each knockout game.
The tournament concluded with Yuvraj at the non-striker's end as Dhoni hit the winning six against Sri Lanka in the final at Mumbai.

IOA EC puts up an united front, insists on working together in push for 2036 Olympics
The Indian Olympic Association put up a united front on Thursday with the entire Executive Council appearing together in public for the first time in almost 18 months, confirming the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the CEO, and setting up a panel to tackle doping. Raghuram's appointment by Usha in January 2024 at a salary of Rs. 20 lakh per month and other perks had been the biggest bone of contention between IOA president P.T. Usha and other members and had remained unratified. A majority of EC members had even brought in a no-confidence motion against Usha last year before it was dropped. Officially titled 'Powering India's Sporting Aspirations: IOA's Vision 2036' there was no denying the meet was primarily to affirm truce within the IOA. No AGM had been held since March 2023 and a stormy EC meeting in September 2024 had failed to break the impasse. Raghuram, who was also present on the occasion, had continued to discharge his duties and was also part of the Indian delegation to meet IOC in Lausanne last month. 'Everything is sorted and that is why he is sitting here with me. Everything is ratified,' Usha declared, 'Raghu Iyer is the CEO of IOA,' AIFF president Kalyan Choubey insisted and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav, one of Usha's most vocal opponents, said, 'It's like small bickering and we are back and happy to be together.' The beginning of the end of the deadlock had begun with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya holding informal meetings with Usha and EC members and trying to get them to negotiate. The IOA visit to Lausanne as part of India's bid for the 2036 Olympics, which included ministry officials, and IOC feedback further helped bring about a rapprochement. 'We are focused on our long-term goal of transforming India into a sporting powerhouse. It's part of our resolve to power through India's sporting aspirations via Mission 2036,' Usha said, adding that the IOA was committed to inclusivity and gender parity in Indian sport. 'We are equally committed to making sports an inclusive space for women, young athletes, those from tribal areas and every Indian who dreams of sporting excellence,' she said. On the new Sports Bill, Choubey said that 'it clearly mentions that the government has brought some guidelines and it is not to interfere. If there is any conflict, the rules of the international body will prevail. Idea is not to create any confrontation or confusion, the idea is to work together.' The seven-member anti-doping panel, meanwhile, will be headed by India's Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal after India's poor record was flagged by the IOC.

AP The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be hosting the Asia Cup after all, albeit in the United Arab Emirates, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan likely to be placed in the same group despite recent hostilities between the two nations. A formal announcement on the same is expected to be announced in a few days' time, sources in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said. The tournament is expected to take place over the course of a fortnight in September, before India's home season gets underway with a two-match Test series against West Indies. Another Indo-Pak clash on the cards? The four-day military showdown between India and Pakistan earlier this year in the aftermath of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam had cast a shadow on future sporting events between the two nations, including cricket. Additionally, tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad had also cast shadows not just on an Indo-Pak clash in the Asia Cup, but on the continental event itself. ACC chief and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi, however, isn't ruling out the possibility of the two fierce rivals being put in the same group and potentially facing each other thrice despite recent tensions. 'We will announce it shortly. We have had discussions with the BCCI and there are a few issues that we will resolve shortly. All 25 members attended the meet either physically or virtually. We are all on same page,' Naqvi told reporters after the meeting in the Bangladeshi capital.
