Liverpool To Retire Jersey Number 20 In Honour Of Diogo Jota

Jota met his untimely end on July 3, 2025, after a tragic car accident in Zamora, Spain, at just 28 years of age. Premier League champions Liverpool announced that they would retire the jersey No. 20 in honour of the late Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who was snatched away by the hands of fate in a car crash in Spain that also claimed the life of his brother Andre Silva. Jota met his end on July 3, 2025, after a tragic car accident in Zamora, Spain, at just 28 years of age. 'After consultation with his wife, Rute, and family, the club can announce the squad number will be retired in honour and memory of Diogo across all levels, including LFC Women and Academy," the Merseyside club revealed. Liverpool's chief executive Michael Edwards stated that, 'I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club's history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual." 'Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person," he added. He married his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, just weeks before his untimely passing. The couple had three children together. Jota began his youth career at Gondomar in 2005 before moving to Paços de Ferreira, where he made his senior debut in 2014. In 2016, he transferred to Atletico Madrid but was immediately loaned to Porto for a season and then to Wolves in 2017. His impressive performances for Wolves led to a permanent move to Molineux. Jota's remarkable achievements at Wolves, including helping the team win the EFL Championship title, earned him a transfer to Premier League giants Liverpool in 2020. With Liverpool, Jota won the Premier League, the FA Cup in the 2021-22 season, and the EFL League Cup. He was also part of the Portuguese team that won the UEFA Nations League in both the 2018/19 and 2024/25 seasons. Born Diogo Jose Teixeira da Silva, he adopted the surname 'Jota' to distinguish himself from teammates with similar names in the youth academy. An avid gamer, Jota formed his own eSports team, Diogo Jota eSports, later renamed Luna Galaxy, and topped the FIFA 21 Championship table in February of that year. A versatile player capable of playing various roles along the front line, Jota clinched the Premier League title with Liverpool a month ago and followed it up with his second UEFA Nations League title. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 09:44 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Reality Is...': Jasprit Bumrah Reminds He's Getting Old After Not Celebrating Milestone

Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah has broken the record for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian in overseas Tests, but his celebration was subdued. There was no punching the air or fist pumping. Just a good old-fashioned high-five with teammates. He didn't want to raise the ball after having completed a five-wicket haul, but fellow pacer Mohammed Siraj coaxed him to. That was how Jasprit Bumrah marked his maiden five-wicket haul at Lord's during the second day of the third Test between India and England. Bumrah got the wobble to nip back sharply to spear it through the defenses of England's Jofra Archer and rattle the stump. It was the 13th time in an overseas Test that the India pace spearhead has taken a five-for which is now the most by anyone from his country, surpassing the previous record of 12 five-fors held by the legendary Kapil Dev. When asked the reason behind his subdued celebration, Bumrah said, 'The reality is I was tired. I was on the field for a long time and sometimes you get tired. I am not 21-22 where I (will) jump around. I usually am not like that. Happy that I contributed. I just wanted to go to my bowling mark and bowl the next ball." Bumrah came into the contest after being rested from the 2nd Test as part of his workload mnagement. He took a shot at critics for questioning his fitness. 'People want to sensationalise for viewership, I understand they want to make money through all that. I am happy that I am helping them do that. Memories are important and want to contribute as much as I can," he said. Bumrah finished with bowling figures of 5/74 after going wicketless on the opening day of the contest. He explained that the pitch was on the slower side but thanks to the sun, it's getting quicker now. He also talked about the infamous Lord's slope. 'I thought about the slope on the last tour, it did not help. My lesson from that was not keep that in mind and I got the benefit of that. In these hot conditions, it is all about maximizing the new ball. It was not like that in the previous tour, that has been the major difference," Bumrah said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Bumrah, who ended the first innings with a fifer, etched his name on the prestigious honours list at the storied cricket ground to help India limit England to a score of 387. Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah entered the Lord's honour board on Friday following his five-wicket haul against England in the third Test of the five-match series between the sides at the fabled stadium in London. Bumrah, who had picked up just a single wicket on the opening day of the Lord's test with the dismissal of Harry Brook, added to his tally on the second day of the game with the removal of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Jofa Archer. The star Indian seamer was helped by fellow quick Maohammed Shami and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who picked up a couple of wickets each as Siraj removed Jamie Smith for 51 runs and Brydon Carse for 56, while Reddy topped the English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett for 18 and 23 runs respectively on the opening day. Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the dangerous Ollie Pope for 44 runs. Returning English pacer Jofra Archer got the better of Yashasvi Jaiswal as the seamer removed the southpaw for 13 runs, before English skipper Stokes dismissed Karun Nair for 40 runs. Indian captain Shubman Gill fell to Brydon Carse for 16 runs as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant closed out Day 2 unbeaten on 53 runs and 19 runs respectively. India finished off the second day of the contest on 145/3. The series remains steadily in the balance at 1-1 as England picked up a win in the opening Test at the Headingley Stadium before India posted a historic triumph at Edgbaston. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 08:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
