‘This is not the work. This is the fun': Runners ready to compete in Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon
'Just have confidence in yourself and have a great time and appreciate the work that you put into it. And this is a victory lap. You know, this is not the work. This is the fun,' said first-time marathon runner Marni Cochrane.

At the expo, runners were picking up their bibs and gear, preparing for the big race. Several participants in both the marathon and half-marathon expressed their excitement about finally crossing that finish line after months of hard training
'The satisfaction, I guess from finishing. Just being like, 'okay, cool. I did it.' Because I've never done like a marathon or half marathon. So just being able to say that I did one, I think it's going to be pretty cool,' said Aaron Bishop, a half marathon runner.
High school cross country athlete Keegan Smith said there's no better way to end his Knoxville running career.
'Next year I'm heading out to Colorado to run for the Buffaloes. I think I kind of wanted to put a nice little bow on my time here in Knoxville, and what better way than to run the Covenant Health Knoxville Half Marathon? I've never done it before. Obviously, I've had friends do it, but I just wanted to kind of have fun and not really put pressure on myself and just really enjoy it, you know, get one last stroll around the city, as I like to say,' explained Smith.
Two-time team USA Olympian Ryan Hall shares advice for those running the marathon on Sunday.
'The last six miles is all heart. But the first 20? You need to be smart as an athlete and realize you still have a long ways to go and find that perfect kind of effort level where you can hang out for hours and hours,' he said.

The marathon, relays, and half marathon will begin at 7:30 am.

Team USA dominated the 2024 Paris Olympics with 34 medals (14 of them gold), the most of any country. This event serves as the primary selection process to determine who will represent Team USA at this summer's 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21. The defending world champions from 2023 in each event have earned a bye to this year's World Championships. NBC Sports will provide extensive coverage of the 2025 World Championships across NBCUniversal platforms, with programming details to be announced at a later date. McLaughlin-Levrone, coming off a Paris Olympic campaign that saw her win her second consecutive 400m hurdles gold medal and re-set her own world record in the event, will solely contest the 400m this weekend. Her personal best of 48.74, the second-fastest time in U.S. history, was set in Eugene in 2023. McLaughlin-Levrone trails only NBC Sports track & field analyst Sanya Richards-Ross' national record of 48.70, which was set in 2006. Paris Olympic 100m gold medalist Noah Lyles looks to defend his 100m and 200m national titles this weekend; at the 2023 World Championships, he became the first man since Usain Bolt in 2015 to win the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay at a single world championship meet. Lyles recently won the 200m at the Monaco Diamond League meet, taking down reigning Olympic 200m gold medalist Letsile Tebogo. Richardson, the Paris Olympic 100m silver medalist, aims to defend her 100m and 4x100m national title. World Aquatics Championships 2025: Luca Urlando wins gold in butterfly, Jack Alexy sets American record
The 200m butterfly has proved an elusive event for Team USA on the men's side following Michael Phelps' retirement. No American man had medaled in the event since 2011, Phelps' last time winning the 200m butterfly at the World Championships. But that changed Wednesday, as Luca Urlando came away with the gold. Urlando posted a 1:51:87 time, beating out Poland's Krzysztof Chmielewski and Australia's Harrison Turner for the top spot. Chmielewski finished second with a time of 1:52:64. Turner came in third, posting a 1:54:17 time. The win is a long time coming for Urlando, who was on the rise before a shoulder injury derailed him in 2022. With the win, Urlando becomes the first American man to pick up a gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. The team struggled early at the event due to an illness that caused a number of swimming to pull out of events or post slower times than usual. The team has recovered since then, with the women leading the way. Gretchen Walsh and Katie Ledecky are among the Team USA women to pick up gold medals at the World Championships so far. Jack Alexy sets new American record in 100m freestyle American Jack Alexy looked strong during 100m freestyle prelims Wednesday. Alexy turned in an incredible time of 46.81, setting a new American record. Alexy's time narrowly beat Caeleb Dressel's 46.96 from the 2019 World Championships. It was an impressive performance by Alexy, but it didn't result in a medal ... yet. Alexy still needs to compete in the final. If he can recapture his semifinal performance, Alexy could walk away from the 100m freestyle with a medal. His job did get somewhat easier Wednesday after 100m freestyle favorite Pan Zhanle was surprisingly eliminated after a poor performance in the semis.
