Harris English moves into top 6 of U.S. Ryder Cup standings. Who else climbed after British?
Harris English might have played his way onto the U.S. Ryder Cup team the last couple months. It started with his T-2 finish at the PGA Championship. Then he finished T-12 at the Memorial, T-4 at the Travelers and capped it with a solo second at the 2025 British Open, finishing four shots behind Scottie Scheffler at Royal Portrush. His finish Sunday vaulted him four spots up the U.S. Ryder Cup standings to sixth, the final automatic spot to make Team USA for the biennial competition in two months at Bethpage Black. Scheffler, the world No. 1, is the only player already on the team via points. Next month, the top six in the standings will also earn automatic spots after the BMW Championship. The British Open was the last chance for players to earn large point totals, and English capitalized. Another player who cashed in was Chris Gotterup, his solo third moving him up 19 spots to 22nd on the list. Captain Keegan Bradley sits 10th in the points list, but with his recent play, fans have clamored for him to use a pick on himself. Time will tell to see whether that happens. Only four more weeks remains for golfers to automatically earn their spots on team USA, but for a majority of players trying to take on Team Europe, they're going to have to show Bradley why they deserve a captain's pick with their play. Here's a look at the updated United States Ryder Cup standings after the British Open: U.S. Ryder Cup standings as of July 21 Rank Name Points 1 Scottie Scheffler (x) 32420.33 2 Xander Schauffele 13383.85 3 J.J. Bradley names Woodland as fifth US Ryder Cup vice captain
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley on Wednesday has named Gary Woodland as the fifth and final vice captain of his team who will try to reclaim the trophy from Europe this year at Bethpage Black in New York. The 41-year-old Woodland, who counts the 2019 U.S. Open among his four wins on the PGA Tour, joins previously appointed Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker on Bradley's staff. "I have an incredible amount of respect and admiration for Gary and all he has accomplished in this game," said Bradley. "As a major champion and someone who is still competing at a high level, he is well aware of the demands of performing on golf's biggest stages." Woodland will be making his first Ryder Cup appearance as a vice captain or player. He represented the U.S. at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia where he earned 1-1/2 points in a 16-14 U.S. victory. In February, Woodland was the recipient of the PGA Tour Courage Award for his return to full-time competition on the U.S.-based circuit following brain surgery in 2023. "Keegan's passion for this event is contagious and I am thrilled to be a part of it," Woodland said. "With just over two months to go until we arrive at Bethpage, I am fully committed to doing everything I can to help Keegan as well as our team of vice captains and players." The Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 26-28.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon coming up Sunday, runners have been preparing at the Goody's Health & Fitness Expo on Saturday. All types of runners, from experienced athletes to beginners, including many from out of state, have signed up to race. 'Just have confidence in yourself and have a great time and appreciate the work that you put into it. And this is a victory lap. You know, this is not the work. This is the fun,' said first-time marathon runner Marni Cochrane. Several participants in both the marathon and half-marathon expressed their excitement about finally crossing that finish line after months of hard training 'The satisfaction, I guess from finishing. Just being like, 'okay, cool. I did it.' Because I've never done like a marathon or half marathon. So just being able to say that I did one, I think it's going to be pretty cool,' said Aaron Bishop, a half marathon runner. High school cross country athlete Keegan Smith said there's no better way to end his Knoxville running career. 'Next year I'm heading out to Colorado to run for the Buffaloes. I think I kind of wanted to put a nice little bow on my time here in Knoxville, and what better way than to run the Covenant Health Knoxville Half Marathon? I've never done it before. Obviously, I've had friends do it, but I just wanted to kind of have fun and not really put pressure on myself and just really enjoy it, you know, get one last stroll around the city, as I like to say,' explained Smith. Two-time team USA Olympian Ryan Hall shares advice for those running the marathon on Sunday. 'The last six miles is all heart. But the first 20? You need to be smart as an athlete and realize you still have a long ways to go and find that perfect kind of effort level where you can hang out for hours and hours,' he said. ▶ See more top stories on The marathon, relays, and half marathon will begin at 7:30 am.
