The Audi RS Q8 is a high-riding supercar
A memorable throwback came across my social media feed this week. Eight years ago this month, we organised an interesting gathering of four exotic, open-air performers for a shootout.
All were quite dazzling, of course, but there seemed to be a closer rivalry within the showdown between two contenders: the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracán, the two spiffy in Spyder form.
While the car with the raging bull on its nose offered the obvious visual flamboyance, it more or less matched the substance wielded by the four-ringed option as the two were largely identical underneath, down to the shared V10 power sources. The kicker was that the Audi cost about half as much.
The average buyer in this realm is not likely to rationalise decisions in such a way. If you want a Lamborghini and can afford it, the cheaper option is irrelevant. But for savvy purchasers who might want to fly under the radar and have some leftover change, Audi holds appeal for its low-key performance wares within the Volkswagen Group, viewed against the picks from Porsche and Lamborghini that share ingredients.
The Q8, particularly in S and RS iterations, is good proof of this. By now you know that the Volkswagen MLB platform underpins the model, in addition to products such as the Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.
It is a proven architecture that has demonstrated versatility, served in a wide assortment of expressions, from plain vanilla (a cushy Touareg 3.0 TDI) to the fire-breathing V8 RS Q8 Performance we recently tested.

Acceleration figures haven't been announced, but the top speed is listed at 360km/h, which is impressive for an EV. AMG's new creation has a disc-shaped stator and rotor, with the magnetic flux following parallel to the motor's axis (axial) rather than perpendicular (radial) as it would in a conventional e-motor. Two of the motors are mounted on the rear axle, with one powering the front wheels, allowing fully variable torque distribution through the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. 'With our high-tech axial flux motor, we're delivering a revolutionary new drive that is unparalleled in terms of power density, weight and packaging,' says Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe. 'This pairs with a new performance battery developed from scratch that enables previously unimagined levels of performance and endurance.' To that end, the pioneering battery design features cylindrical cells that are 'remarkably' tall and slim, which benefits cooling. The lithium-ion energy storage unit has a high voltage of more than 800 volts, and thanks to a very high average charging power of over 850kW, the concept can recharge energy for around 400km in just five minutes. Renault Duster 1.3T Intens excels as an urban adventurer
The Renault Duster is jointly produced by Renault and Romanian subsidiary brand Dacia. It should be the last word in the segment considering Eastern Europe gave birth to the dominant crossover segment with the Russian Lada Niva. With 54 segment alternatives from Europe, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and China to contend with, is the third-generation Renault Duster model on test this week up to the challenge? Three models are on sale, and differently configured. Our Cedar green car is the Renault Duster 1.3T Intens, a front-wheel drive, seven-speed automatic mid-tier offering costing R520,000. The entry level Duster Zen that shares similar mechanicals is R30k cheaper while the range-topping Duster 1.2T Zen that comes with a hybrid drivetrain, 4WD underpinnings and a manual transmission exclusively costs R30k more. The chunky design continues inside the cabin that's transformed dramatically from old, with a neat minimalist approach. It is ergonomic and sensible with remote finger controls for the climate system, mirrors, central locking and volume control, but many of the settings have moved into digital menus within the standard fitment 10.1' infotainment touch screen. A 7' digital instrument cluster is for the driver and amenities include a 360° camera, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, air-conditioning and electric windows. The seats and steering wheel are manually adjusted and the seating was comfy and well-judged. Other likable bits are the roominess for four or five passengers, and a 472l boot, though the tailgate isn't electric.

Kelvin van der Linde claims dramatic Nurburgring 24 Hour victory
South Africa's Kelvin van der Linde brought home another dramatic 24-hour race win this weekend. Unarguably, motorsport fans acknowledge the Nurburgring 24 Hour (N24) to be the toughest endurance race in the world. And this is the third time South African Kelvin van der Linde has tasted success there. Kelvin van der Linde formed part of the four-member #98 Rowe BMW M4 GT3 team. He shared the single-car entry with Augusto Farfus, Jesse Krohn and Raffaele Marchiello. Therefore, the Jo'Burg-born 29-year old has now won the daunting N24 race three times. Image: Cruppe C Photography The 2025 edition of the N24 race was unarguably the most intense in recent years. While previous editions have been hampered by rain and fog delays, the 2025 race unfolded in near-perfect conditions. Nevertheless, a bizarre power outage still necessitated a two-and-a-half-hour red-flag delay. However, when racing eventually resumed, Kelvin van der Linde was tasked with chasing down the leading #911 Manthey Porsche. With the legendary Kevin Estre at the wheel of the Porsche, a spell-binding chase ensued. And the rapid South African had the unenviable task of closing down a 90-second gap. Eventually, after handing over the BMW to teammate Marchiello, the race was settled in a dramatic moment (watch below) … The 2025 N24 race-defining moment. Video: GT World on YouTube Don't forget, the N24 is the most unique endurace race of its sort. Owing to the length of the track, there are no full course yellows or safety cars to condense the pack. As such, you don't get any contrived racing. And the way Kelvin van der Linde had to chase down the leader over several hours was utterly spellbinding. Nevertheless, after heaping tons pressure on the leading Porsche, the race was effectively settled in one moment (watch above). Coming upon a slower back marker, Estre in the #911 Porsche dived for the corner to make the pass. He went up one on a tall curb and collected the Aston Martin, putting the hapless car on its roof as he sped away. The chasing #98 BMW somehow avoided the incident, too, by taking to the grass. Image: Gruppe C Photography Still, with several hours to go in the race, the Manthey team appealed the stewards' penalty. They argued the Aston Martin driver had turned in on them. Nevertheless, this kept intrigue the whole way through. As such, the #98 BMW kept ahead of the 100-second gap, as the race ebbed and flowed. Finally, South Africa's Kelvin van der Linde brought the BMW M4 GT3 over the line. And he now heads to Belgium for the Spa 24-Hour race this coming weekend (28-29 June 2025). Impressively, he is one of only seven drivers in the world who is racing all three major endurance races this month. These include the 24 Hours of Le Mans, N24 and Spa 24 Hour.
