German foreign minister arrives in Kyiv to discuss support for Ukraine

BERLIN - German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has arrived in Kyiv to discuss support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, the foreign ministry said on Monday.
"We will continue to stand firmly by Ukraine's side so that it can continue to defend itself successfully - with modern air defence and other weapons, with humanitarian and economic aid," Wadephul said in a statement.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for help from Washington and Western allies to bolster Ukraine's air defences after a Russian attack on Sunday that involved hundreds of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles.
Germany is Ukraine's second-biggest military backer after the United States, whose commitment to Kyiv has been called into question, putting pressure on Europe to step up. REUTERS

"No one is delaying anything here," Mr Peskov told reporters in Moscow. "We are naturally in favor of achieving the goals that we are trying to achieve through the special military operation via political and diplomatic means. Therefore, we are not interested in drawing out anything." Mr Peskov noted that the dates of the third round of talks still needed to be agreed. Poland to start controls on borders with Germany, Lithuania

Tusk's liberal government has been accused by nationalist opposition parties of accepting numerous illegal migrants being sent back from Germany. The government has argued that the numbers are limited. Debate over migration in Poland has turned increasingly heated in recent weeks, with far-right activists starting to organise patrols along the border with Germany. "We consider the temporary reintroduction of controls necessary to reduce the uncontrolled flows of migrants across the Polish-German border to a minimum," Tusk told a government meeting. Germany said in February that it was extending its own temporary border controls for six months. Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Tuesday Germany wants to preserve the EU's Schengen open border scheme, which allows passport-free movement, but this could only work if it was not abused by criminals who smuggle migrants. "We know that the Polish government also wants to impose border controls with Lithuania in order to limit illegal border crossings from Lithuania to Poland," Merz told a news conference. "So, we have a common problem here that we want to solve together." Poland has been facing what it says is a migrant crisis orchestrated by Belarus and Russia on its eastern border since 2021. "We naturally want to preserve this Schengen area, but freedom of movement in the Schengen area will only work in the long term if it is not abused by those who promote irregular migration, in particular by smuggling migrants," he said at a news conference with his counterpart from Luxembourg. Merz also said Germany was working closely with Poland on border controls in an effort to solve the problem of illegal migration. "There is a very close, very collegial, friendly cooperation between the heads of government, that is, between (Polish Prime Minister) Donald Tusk and me, and between interior ministers, because we want to solve a common problem together," Merz said.
