Maritime Traveler, believed to have been the last living horse sired by legendary 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, has died at the age of 35, reports the Ocala Gazette. Retired to stud for the 1974 breeding season, Secretariat stood at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky until his death in 1989 at 19 from laminitis. In that time, he sired 663 foals including Maritime Traveler, who was born in 1990 from the last crop.Born on May 15, 1990, in Ontario, Maritime Traveler was produced from the Northern Dancer mare Oceana, Maritime Traveler was foaled at the famed Windfields Farm. A commercial breeding operation founded by E.P. Taylor in 1950, Windfields was the birthplace of many breed-shaping names in racing. Among the most notable were Nearctic, Nijinsky, and Vice Regent as well as Maritime Traveler's maternal grandsire, Northern Dancer, the first-ever Canadian Thoroughbred to win the Kentucky Derby.
Consigned to the 1991 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Maritime Traveler's breeding did much to recommend him. He was purchased by Bridlewood founder Arthur Appleton for a modest $55,000.Despite the high hopes that ferry any new runner to the track, Maritime Traveler did not quite live up to the heights of his father. Racing exclusively at Woodbine, the chestnut made five attempts in maiden special weight company for trainer Emile Allain. His best effort came at two when he took fourth. The decision to suspend his racing career was made shortly after.Instead of selling as so many do, Appleton brought Maritime Traveler home to Ocala, where he was enlisted as a teaser for the breeding program. It was there that the horse's stamina and obliging disposition would serve him well in years to come.
'We retired Maritime Traveler as a teaser when he was 28,' George Isaacs, Bridlewood Farm's stallion manager, told the Ocala Gazette. 'Up until his death, he lived in a paddock that backs up to 100 acres of forest. He had a good life here at Bridlewood Farm. It was our honor to have him as a special connection to the great Secretariat.'Read more at the Ocala Gazette. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

Kenny Dichter's REAL SLX Races To The Kentucky Derby

After launching during the World Series and following up with activations at the Super Bowl, NCAA Women's Final Four basketball championships, and then the Masters, REAL SLX will be on the track at Churchill Downs this Saturday for the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby. The brainchild of Marquis Jet and Wheels Up founder Kenny Dichter once again puts him at the intersection of of what has become a hot trend: creating once-in-a-lifetimes memories with your friends and loved ones and professional sports. In this case it is about traveling to blue chip sporting events and being treated like a VIP while you are there. It combines inside-the-ropes access and being able to rub elbows with celebrities and star athletes. Jet card seller Sentient Jet, which will be hosting clients and is the private aviation partner of the Kentucky Derby, cites research from American Express showing 60% of respondents plan to travel for live entertainment and sporting experiences. Researcher Global Markets Insights reports that sports tourism is growing at a 10% annual clip. As of 2023, the market was valued at $564.7 billion. Dichter's REAL SLX is a membership-based sports, lifestyle, and experiences platform that is known for its partnership with New York restaurant Rao's. Its signature move is serving up the eatery's famous meatballs to its VIP guests. After kicking off REAL SLX with activations during the World Series, Super Bowl and Masters Kenny ... More Dichter's sports and lifestyle platform will be raising awareness through sponsoring American Promise and Luxor Cafe. However, Dichter won't be in the kitchen this weekend. The goal is to be in the winner's circle where the private aviation entrepreneur is making a big bet to build his nascent brand. REAL SLX will sponsor a pair of Kentucky Derby contenders sired by Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify. Its logo will appear on jockey silks, saddlecloths, and stable gear during the run for the roses. According to the Sports Business Journal, Leverage Agency put the sponsorship together. It was the agency for similar deals with Wheels Up in the past. Luxor Café, offspring of American Pharoah, is a 14-to-1 bet per NBC Sports American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in 2015. Justify Scion American Promise is currently 12-to-1. Dichter says, "This is about more than racing—it's about legacy, loyalty, and performance." He adds, "To align REAL SLX with the offspring of two of the most iconic champions in horse racing history is the perfect way to launch our presence at the Derby." With Dichter at the helm, Wheels Up sponsored American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. He says REAL SLX and Rao's will have activations at the big race next year. Last year, he signed partnerships with FanDuel and BetMGM. The relationships enable the online businesses to connect with fans via live events. Dichter's insights come from his past experience. Private jet companies are regular participants at blue chip sporting events. For the jet companies, it provides customers with unique access, enables executives to mingle with their UHNW clients, and encourages them to burn off flight hours, which hopefully leads to more sales. Former rival Sentient Jet will host its annual members' breakfast, which will feature Food Network star and celebrity chef Bobby Flay. It is also backing Tiztastic, a 20-to-1 bet. "Our ninth year at Churchill Downs speaks to the meaningful role this event plays for our card owners, with many of whom are deeply connected to the sport," says Sentient Jet President Alan Walsh, adding, 'As demand grows for access to culturally significant moments like the Derby, we are proud to provide access and hospitality card owners who want more than just a seat at the race and look for a memorable experience built around it.' Recently, VistaJet announced Private World hospitality packages clients can buy during the French Open and Wimbledon. It had a major presence at the Masters for the first time this year setting up a Vista House hospitality zone. In some cases, the access and experiences are not a reward for patronage or an add-on. Some private flight providers use their sports hookups to directly generate sales. Fly Alliance included tickets to the Kentucky Derby, Masters, or Indianapolis 500 as part of a March Madness jet card promotion. You had to buy 50 hours to get the tickets. OneFlight International has offered spots in Pro-Am golf events as part of its jet card offers. During his tenure at Marquis Jet and Wheels Up, Dichter successfully used high-profile and targeted sports sponsorships combined with VIP hospitality to build awareness and sell memberships. In one instance in the early 2000s Marquis Jet had its name and logo on players' chairs in the visiting team locker at Boston's Fenway Park. In a similar deal earlier this year Wheels Up gained naming rights and branding for a VIP entrance at State Farm Arena in Atlanta reserved for Hawks players, coaching staff, premier partners, and VIP seat members. It also named rEvolution its agency of record for brand experiences in March. During the Masters, the Delta Air Lines-back private flight company provided members with transfers between their jets and the Wheels Up Clubhouse via the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus SE. Once there they sipped on Pimento Cheese Martinis from drinks journalist, bartender, and content creator Tyler Zielinski, who goes by @bon_vivantito. So far, Dichter has not announced any partnerships in his former space.

Eating Around Saratoga Springs New York

Saratoga Springs is a city in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The name reflects the ... More presence of mineral springs in the area, which has made Saratoga a popular resort destination. Winter can be harsh in Upstate New York: think multiple feet of snow blocking your driveway. So, the area's denizens sometimes hunker down for dinner. So, luckily for Saratoga Springs' residents, the town famous for its Triple Crown racetrack, offers solid food both in and out of racing season. Saratoga Springs is known for its Triple Crown racing. Most of the standout restaurants are local, single-location places and even the Morton's here is somewhat swanky. A handful of new wine, and cocktail, bars have opened the town's wine lists offer some unusual gems if you cherry pick them. Bubbles Galore The inside of Bocage. A new wine bar that runs NYC hours just opened. It is serving up bubbles from all over the world--as well as great still wine--in a swank setting accompanied by bumps of caviar. Bocage Champagne Bar would not be out of place in Brooklyn, and I mean that in a good way. The couple who owns the bar are slated to open another place called Standard Fare this spring, which will feature even later opening hours. The small sliver of Skidmore students, whose campus is up the hill from downtown Saratoga, who are of drinking age will no doubt love this place. While the Saratoga Morton's is unfortunately based in a casino, the steaks are good. And the DeToren Fusion V was better. It is one of my favorite Cape Blends--riffs on Bordeaux blends that may also contain wildcards like Syrah and Pinotage—from the Stellenbosch region. Vineyard landscape at sunset with mountains in Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, South Africa. wine ... More grapes on vine in vineyard, Another wine highlight was the Dole Des Monts, a Swiss wine based on the grape of the same name, found at Seneca. Swiss wines are rarely seen on lists stateside as production is low, prices are high and the Swiss themselves are very fond of their own wines. This wine actually worked perfectly with a dish of fried perogies. Other Bites Around Town Fried chicken at Hattie's. Hattie's, one of Saratoga's historic restaurants, serves up some nice fried chicken and savory Gumbo. The hours here are not as flexible as at Bocage, so come early for brunch or chow down quickly. The Spanish-influenced restaurant, Boca Bistro, serves up a nice selection of salads. They also had a good, tomato-based seafood stew swimming in clams and shrimp. The wine by the glass selection is limited, but there are a few Spanish offerings. The oddly named Hamlet & Ghost is considered one of the best restaurants in town. During racing season locals say it is tough to get a reservation here. The cozy, buzzy restaurant serves up some interesting small plates such as burrata fondue and chicory salad but doesn't seem to have a lot of structure to its menu. Once again, these upstate wine buyers are finding some gems and we thoroughly enjoyed a great bottle of Chinon my last night. Saratoga Springs is a city in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The name reflects the ... More presence of mineral springs in the area, which has made Saratoga a popular resort destination. The town is also home to a number of local tasting rooms such as the Thirsty Owl, which I sadly didn't get to visit. The Finger Lakes' wine appellations are sadly a three-hour drive away. The town has slow-as-molasses train service on the scenic route from Montreal and can also be reached by Albany airport.
