
How many colours in a rainbow? More than 100: Think Like A Mathematician by Junaid Mubeen
Doing jigsaws with Junaid Mubeen doesn't sound like much fun. Mubeen insists on sorting the pieces according to three characteristics: colour, number of tabs (pointy bits) and size.
He uses three trays – one for each size – and creates grids on them, with each row representing a colour and each column a number. His brother-in-law, with whom he does jigsaws, prefers to just fish pieces out of a messy jumble.
Mubeen is a mathematician. He believes that understanding mathematical concepts will help us think more clearly about everyday issues. And he's not just talking about 'applied' maths that helps us construct bridges or check our bank statements. He means 'pure' maths, which is more abstract and usually has no obvious utility.
'Pure mathematicians often take pride in the apparent uselessness of their work, even deriding the supposed need for their subject to bring practical benefits,' Mubeen writes. ''Here's to pure mathematics', starts one toast, 'may it never be of use to anyone.''
Across ten chapters he covers topics such as 'dimensionality', 'sets', 'axioms' and 'fractals'. He's good at leading readers through unfamiliar concepts and most of it is pretty interesting stuff.
For example, everyone knows that the rainbow has seven colours, right? At school, we all learned 'Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet'. But that number is arbitrary. In his chapter on 'the continuum', Mubeen points out that: 'Those colours represent specific wavelengths (in increasing order) but we could just as well reference ten colours, or a hundred, or indeed any number between the two extremes of red and violet. Isaac Newton, whose experiments led to the discovery of the visible light spectrum, attached mystical significance to the number seven, which is probably why he settled on that many markers.'
This leads into a discussion about numbers that can't be accurately expressed as fractions – irrational numbers, such as pi – and then to a description of 'calculus' and, for the first time, I, a non-mathematician, felt as though I understood what the latter is.
But his efforts to show how this knowledge can map on to everyday issues are less successful. The jigsaw story comes in the chapter on 'dimensionality', in which he attempts to relate the mathematical concept of spaces with many more dimensions than three to the notion that there are lots of different types of intelligence. An understanding of multi-dimensional spaces doesn't add much to the idea that intelligence is a complex attribute.
Elsewhere he writes that just as the limitations of our senses mean our perception of the world is a distortion of the reality, so the sort of mathematical concepts with which we are most familiar do not truly reflect the subject. Then he compares that with the way we provide only a selective view of our lives on social media.
The analogy is reasonable but we don't need an understanding of complex mathematical ideas to get the measure of Instagram.
I think I might be with those who celebrate pure mathematics for its lack of applications.

Metal bottle caps ‘surprising' source of microplastic contamination, study finds
Metal bottle caps can be a significant source of microplastic contamination in beverages, a new peer-reviewed study by France's food safety agency finds. Researchers compared microplastic levels in beer, water, wine and soft drinks, and found the substance in all samples, but liquid in glass jars showed the highest levels. The surprising source of the contamination – a polyester-based paint on the glass bottles' metal caps. The findings were 'very surprising', said Alexandre Dehaut, a study co-author with the French agency for food, environmental and occupational health and safety. 'Caps were suspected to be the main source of contamination, as the majority of particles isolated in beverages were identical to the color of caps and shared the composition of the outer paint,' the authors wrote in the study. Microplastics are tiny bits of plastic either intentionally added to consumer goods, or that are products of larger plastics breaking down. The particles contain any number of 16,000 plastic chemicals, of which thousands, such as BPA, phthalates and Pfas, present serious health risks. The substance has been found throughout the human body, and is a neurotoxicant that can cross the placental and brain barriers. It is linked to an increased risk of heart attack and cancer. Diet is thought to be a main exposure route – testing in recent years has consistently identified microplastics in a range of foods and beverages, and packaging is one source of contamination. Researchers in the new study checked beverages in water, glass, metal, and brick bottles, and found microplastics in all. The levels in the glass bottles were highest – about 50 times higher than the plastic. The glass bottles used metal caps, while the plastic bottles came with plastic caps. The plastic caps did not use the same kind of paint as the metal caps, researchers noted. Dehaut said they were led to the paint because the microplastic fragments they found in the beverages seemed to match the paint. Closer scrutiny revealed the microplastics matched material, color and polymeric composition of the paint lining the outside of the caps. It appears the bottle caps are stored post production with thousands of other caps in bags or boxes, and those scrape each other as they are jostled, Dehaut noted. Once the caps are sealed to the bottles, the bits of plastic from the scratches end up in the beverage. The authors were able to see the tiny scrapes and scratches when they placed the caps under a microscope. However, Dehaut said the strategy worked in the lab, but it may be more difficult to do on an industrial scale. They also found microplastics that did not come from the paint, meaning the contamination occurred somewhere in the production process, or was in the product's water. Though the dangers of microplastics are coming into sharper focus, the health impacts of those that researchers found in the bottles are unclear because there's so much variation in the type of plastic, and they did not run risk assessments, Dehaut said. Consumers could avoid metal bottle caps. Dehaut said there is little people can do at home about the contamination because the microplastics are already in the beverages. He said the findings point to the need to investigate and avoid contamination further upstream during the production process. 'We should investigate such things, but don't be paranoid,' Dehaut said.

Skin swabs may help detect Parkinson's years before symptoms appear
There is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease, nor are there specific tests for early diagnosis. A new study has identified a way to detect the condition before symptoms appear through the use of skin swabs via sebum and smell. The swabs could offer a noninvasive way to help diagnose Parkinson's disease in people who have not yet developed symptoms. According to the Parkinson's Foundation, more than 10 million people around the world are living with Parkinson's disease — a neurological disease that negatively impacts a person's movement and speech is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease. Although right now there are no specific tests to help diagnose the condition, identifying warning signs of Parkinson's disease as early as possible is critical in helping to slow disease progression. 'Current clinical diagnosis is too late as disease has progressed a lot,' Drupad K. Trivedi, PhD, lecturer in analytical and measurement science at the University of Manchester, told Medical News Today. Trivedi is the corresponding author of a new study recently published in the journal npj Parkinson's Disease that has identified a way to detect the condition before symptoms appear through the use of skin swabs. 'Smelling' signs of Parkinson's diseaseFor this study, scientists focused on testing study participants by using skin swabs of their sebum — an oily substance naturally produced by the skin's sebaceous the skin swabs, Trivedi said they were able to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the sebum. Different VOCs have a distinct smell, which is what helps make each person's body odor unique. 'We have found a few compounds that are expressed differently in people with Parkinson's disease compared to healthy controls as well as those who had REM sleep behavior disorder. A test that is a simple skin swab can potentially be the first test to detect Parkinson's before all the clinical signs start appearing.' — Drupad K. Trivedi, PhDThis study is an extension of two previous studies conducted by Trivedi and his team. The first study in March 2019 identified the presence of VOC biomarkers in the sebum of people with Parkinson's disease that also has a distinct smell. A second study in February 2021 that found a differential VOC profile between participants with Parkinson's disease and controls when analyzing their sebum. All of this research was reportedly inspired by Joy Milne, a research associate at the University of Manchester, who has a condition called hyperosmia, giving her an extremely strong sense of smell. In 2015, it was reported that Milne was able to 'smell' Parkinson's disease on her husband about six years before he received his concept of 'smelling' Parkinson's disease was further validated in a study recently published in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease — for which Trivedi was also part of the research team — that found trained dogs could detect an odor on skin swabs to detect Parkinson's disease. Sebum compound levels may indicate Parkinson's diseaseResearchers recruited 83 study participants. Of this number, 46 had a Parkinson's disease diagnosis, 28 were healthy controls, and nine had isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD), which is considered to be an early warning sign of Parkinson's disease. Upon analysis, Trivedi and his team found that 55 significant features in the sebum that varied between the groups, and those with iRBD had levels in between those with Parkinson's disease and the healthy controls.'There were 55 features that showed levels for iRBD between healthy and Parkinson's disease,' Trivedi detailed. 'iRBD is one of the prodromal symptoms of Parkinson's disease. This means a good proportion of individuals suffering from iRBD may develop Parkinson's disease in the next decade or more. The intermediate level indicates a progression from control to iRDB to Parkinson's disease.' 'By early detection, we will be able to triage and offer advanced clinical tests, specialist support for confirmatory diagnosis without relying on physical symptoms to appear,' he continued. 'It also creates a potential to develop disease-modifying therapies in the future.' 'Next steps are to quantify these observed compounds in Parkinson's disease and iRBD, and also validate these findings in a long-term prospective study of [a] bigger iRBD cohort,' Trivedi added. Sebum VOCs may also help map Parkinson's progressionAdditionally, Trivedi collected sebum samples from people with Parkinson's disease over a three-year period. From these samples, he was able to find sebum compound patterns that suggest this method may also be used to map disease progression. 'This indicates that molecules we see on (the) skin surface may indicate progression of Parkinson's disease — it is a progressive disease with no cure,' he explained. 'A sudden, rapid progression could be monitored in future using such markers on [the] skin surface. There is also a potential to monitor [the] efficacy of treatment by such an approach.'Possible noninvasive tool for diagnosing presymptomatic Parkinson'sMNT also spoke with Rocco DiPaola, MD, a neurologist and movement disorder specialist at Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in New Jersey, about this study. DiPaola commented that this study's results would offer a noninvasive tool for potentially diagnosing presymptomatic Parkinson's disease. 'While there are currently no treatments that prevent or slow the progression of disease, as these treatments become available, it will be important to identify those at risk prior to symptom onset,' he continued. 'Further studies on a larger scale to further determine validity of results as well as a means to have this available as a standardized test. Although not specific to this study, it would be important to continue to find ways to diagnose Parkinson's disease prior to symptom onset.'

New test twice as effective as previous methods for predicting obesity
Scientists have developed a new DNA -based tool capable of predicting a child's risk of developing obesity in adulthood. The test, which analyses DNA from a blood sample, is thought to be twice as effective as previous methods and can identify risk before the age of five, allowing for targeted preventative strategies. Published in Nature Medicine, the scientists' research involved a vast genetic dataset of over five million people and can also predict how obese adults will respond to weight loss programmes. The World Obesity Federation forecasts that over half the global population will be overweight or obese by 2035. Despite its advancements, the new tool has limitations, such as being more accurate for people of European ancestry compared to those of African ancestry.
