Woman who had facial transplant after chimp attack reveals what she looks like 16 years on

Daily Mail19-06-2025
A woman whose face was ripped off by a chimpanzee has revealed what she looks like 16 years after undergoing a life-changing face transplant.
In February 2009, Charla Nash, now 71, was attacked by her friend Sandra Herold's chimpanzee, Travis, at her home in Connecticut , who bit off her nose, lips, eyelids and hands.
Now, after undergoing a full face transplant in 2011 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2011, Charla told 60 Minutes Australia, the surgery 'brought my life back' as she expressed gratitude to the doctors.
She said: 'It's a wonderful thing and words can't express the gratitude but I had this opportunity to live a better life.'
She added: 'The nose and the upper lip I can't feel yet, but little by little it's coming back, I can feel my cheek and forehead, so it's getting there.
'I was only drinking everything from through a straw and my goal is to be able to eat again.'
Charlie, who lives in an assisted care center, undergoes daily rehabilitation and speech therapy.
She said: 'Life's getting better, it is coming around slowly but yeah it's getting better, It's hard but it's better.'
Charla said she is slowly getting feeling back in her face and has started to eat solid food again.
The military funded the facial transplant in order to learn more about how it could help wounded veterans, and Charla has been subject to medical tests ever since.
While her body rejected transplants on her hands, the facial surgery was successful.
Charla, who also was fitted with glass eyes, is blind after she had her eyes removed due to a disease transmitted by the chimp, who had worked as an actor and appeared in commercials for Old Navy and Coca Cola.
Charla, a former barrel racer and horse jumper, said she has become increasingly patient because she has had to ask for help instead of doing everything herself.
But she chooses to look to the future and dreams of living on a farm in a small town once she is finished with her medical tests.
Travis the chimpanzee was raised in Connecticut by Sandra Herold, who treated the pet as if he were her son.
The 200lb animal was thought to be domesticated since he would open doors, drink wine from a glass, eat at the dinner table, and dress himself. He even used the computer.
But on the day of the attack, Travis tried to escape by taking Sandra's car keys and trying to use them on several cars.
Sandra, who died in 2010, tried to lure Travis back into the house and gave him an iced tea laced with Xanax. When Nash, who was a friend and employee of Sandra's arrived at the house to help, the animal brutally attacked her.
Investigators suggested Travis may have mistook Nash, who was familiar with the chimp, as an intruder after she appeared with a new hairstyle.
They also believe the Xanax, which is used for anxiety in humans, may have also fueled Travis's aggression.
In return for footing her medical bills, she goes in for medical tests every few weeks.
She is subjected to MRIs and CT scans to determine how well her brain is sending signals to her new face. In addition, doctors examine how well the arteries are delivering blood to the transplant.
The military is also interested in monitoring the scarring around the mouth and how well her eyelids work.
In 2014, Charla revealed that she has no independence since the attack and that people were afraid to come near her.
Charla, who raised her daughter Briana on her own: 'I've never been a quitter'.
She also hopes to use her story so that others don't have to face a similar ordeal, and is working with advocates on a video to encourage stronger laws restricting exotic animals.
She said she never felt at ease with Travis being locked up in her friend's home before pal Sandra Herold, died of an aneurism in 2010.
She said: 'I remember looking at him in his cage and feeling sorry for him. My thoughts were always, "How is she allowed this animal in her house? What if he gets loose someday and somebody gets hurt?" I know the animals are cute - but they're just not pets.'
After the attack, her family sought permission to sue Connecticut for $150million for failing to seize the animal before the attack.
But the state claims commissioner denied permission, saying that state law did not prohibit the private ownership of chimpanzees at the time of the attack.
She was given $4million in compensation by the estate of the animal's now-dead owner.

George Lucas makes Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

SAN DIEGO, July 27 (Reuters) - Excited fans waved glowing "Star Wars" lightsabers on Sunday at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for George Lucas' latest project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Along with Lucas, the panel included director Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, vice president of Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab Lucasfilm, with Queen Latifah moderating at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees shouted "Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!" and clapped their hands in anticipation of the "Star Wars" creator's arrival, and gave the 81-year-old Lucas a standing ovation as he took his seat. "Opening in 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media," a press release from the museum said. The 11-acre campus, in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, will include a green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theaters, a library, restaurant, café, and retail and community spaces. Some of its collection will include art from comic book artist Jack Kirby, painter Norman Rockwell and illustrator Kadir Nelson, as well as a Lucas archive with models, props, concept art and costumes. "I love all art, no matter what it is," Lucas said after showing a video that gave a sneak peek at the museum. The video included renderings of the museum interior and exterior, as well as the museum's broad range of art ranging from more traditional fine art and comic book strips to "Star Wars" sculptures and installations. Lucas began the panel recalling his days as a college student struggling to pursue his dream of becoming an art collector due to the steep cost of fine art. But the filmmaker found an affordable exception with comic books, sold cheaply in "underground" markets. Now, rather than selling art he collected over around 50 years, Lucas said he prefers to create what he calls a "temple to the people's art." Lucas kept the conversation focused on the museum and did not discuss "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones." For del Toro, the museum offers a visual past that belongs to everyone" and can't be erased, noting that he may move some of his personal art collection to the Lucas Museum. Part of the liberation that comes with narrative art for the "Pan's Labyrinth" director also means that art can't be made with a computer app, as it lacks "personality and knowledge."

Shocking video appears to show baseball fans caught in vile sex act at Yankee Stadium

Two baseball fans appeared to be engaging in a sex act in the stands of Yankee Stadium in a shocking video that went viral on Sunday. The footage, which flooded social media, shows a man - wearing a Philadelphia Phillies jersey and cap - sitting alongside a woman near the top of the stands. Despite being surrounded by other fans - at what appears to be Yankee Stadium - the man appears to be performing a sexual act on the woman. 'This is f***ing insane,' one fan can be heard saying as the couple continues the act in broad daylight - and in clear sight of those around them. It is not immediately clear when the footage was taken but the Phillies have just spent the weekend in New York for a series against the Yankees. The two teams clashed again at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in the third and final game of the series. The footage - captured by another fan a few rows back - appeared on TikTok on Sunday. Around the same time, the Yankees secured a 4-3 win over the Phillies. Back in 2012, reports emerged that a couple was caught having sex in the bathrooms of Yankee Stadium during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. More recently, a man and his partner were accused of performing a sex act at the top of the stands during a game between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners. Last year, meanwhile, an OnlyFans model claimed she and her boyfriend had sex in the parking lot outside Allegiant Stadium during the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs edged a thrilling 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers. And model Kaylee Killion claimed she had sex in the parking lot with her fiance, Cody Nelson.

Robin Williams' Mrs. Doubtfire costar shares bizarre wish to bring him back using AI... a decade after his death

More than 30 years after Mrs. Doubtfire first hit theaters, one of its stars is hoping to honor Robin Williams in a very modern way. Matthew Lawrence, who played one of the Hillard children in the beloved 1993 comedy, shared during a recent Comic-Con appearance that he'd love to see the late comedian's unforgettable voice used as a foundation for artificial intelligence, with the blessing of his family, of course. 'I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic,' Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly during a live-streamed interview promoting his new graphic novel project, The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency. Lawrence, now 45, was just 12 when he starred alongside Williams in the hit film about a devoted father who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny in order to stay close to his kids after a divorce. The memories, Lawrence said, have stayed with him ever since. Williams died by suicide in 2014 at age 63, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, heart, and characters that transcended generations. For Lawrence. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool,' the Marry Christmas star explained. Lawrence said he got the idea after watching an old commercial the Oscar winner was starring in and realized it had some interesting parallels to today. 'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerized voiceover, and it always stuck with me' Lawrence said of the advertisement. 'And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of A.I. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.' During a previous interview with the outlet, Lawrence recalled the life lessons he learned from Williams, including compassion, on the set of Mrs. Doubtfire. 'He really quantified what it was to be a real artist for me in the sense that he was definitely... the most brilliant artist I've ever worked with.' 'But on top of that, he had the compassion, he had the humility, and he also had these things that he struggled with.' Regarding their upcoming graphic novel, the brothers; Matthew, Joey, 49, and Andy 37, are raising funds via Kickstarter for the project. They said the idea was sparked about a decade ago after Matthew got a nasty sunburn and started to peel. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool,' Lawrence said of his idea Williams died by suicide in 2014 at age 63. Lawrence said his family would have to give their blessing before Williams' voice could be used for AI; Pictured in New York City in September 2013 'These two guys started making a joke that I was a lizard...' 'Matt shed a version of himself,' Andy interjected,' and then that version was the evil villain that caused havoc...' Matthew picked it up from there, adding, 'and we had to start our own detective agency to solve the crime.' They have teamed up with The Berkowitz Brothers who are veterans of the genre, along with artists Brian Bengal Yuran and Sean Von Gorman. In 2023, Williams' daughter Zelda spoke out against using artificial intelligence to re-create her father's voice. 'I am not an impartial voice in SAG's fight against AI. I've witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/re-create actors who cannot consent, like Dad,' she wrote on her Instagram Story.
