120,000 UK motorists unable to drive their cars after safety alert issued

Daily Mirror03-07-2025
The warning relates to second-generation Citroen C3s produced from 2009 to 2016 and first-generation DS3s manufactured from 2016 to 2019
UK drivers have revealed how they've been left with cars that they cannot drive after a major alert was issued over a potentially dangerous airbag fault.
An urgent safety recall was issued last month for versions of the Citroen C3 and the related DS3s. The warning relates to second-generation Citroen C3s produced from 2009 to 2016 and first-generation DS3s manufactured from 2016 to 2019.
These vehicles use Takata airbag systems, which could be faulty. It comes after a woman sustained fatal injuries caused by an airbag in a 2014 Citroen C3 in Reims, France, last year.
As a result, around 82,000 C3 and DS3 models have been removed from the road across France. The BBC estimates that this warning affects around 120,000 drivers in the UK.
One frustrated UK driver recently told the BBC that her car cannot be fixed until next year. Blue badge holder Denise Harris, 67, from Hull, said the earliest appointment she has been offered is January 2026.
She said: "I've just paid my insurance for the year [and] I've paid my tax for the year for it to go home and stay in the car park and not be driven for six months."
Another motorist, Lisa Shackleton, 69, from Hull, told the BBC the she needs her vehicle to take her elderly husband to medical appointments, and to get to her daughter, who is three hours away and having chemotherapy treatment.
She said: "I've tried to get the car fixed, but as I didn't get to know about the recall soon enough, the earliest it can be done is the end of July."
If you have one of these affected cars, you should be contacted by letter. You can also check if your car is part of the recall by using the VIN check tool on Citroen's website.
Stellantis, which owns the Citroen brand, said that there were no reported incidents of faults in the UK.
The car manufacturer said in a recent statement: 'Stellantis UK is mobilising its full network of suppliers, retailers and manufacturing plant to support this action to ensure the fastest, safest and most convenient solution for each customer.
'Stellantis remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue.'
In a recall notice published online, Stellantis said: "Stellantis UK announces an immediate stop-drive action for all Citroën C3 (second generation) and DS3 (first generation) vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2019 equipped with Takata airbags.
"Owners of such vehicles should immediately cease using their vehicle when safe to do so. Vehicles included in this new stop-drive action in the UK, were already part of an ongoing comprehensive recall campaign that started over one year ago, first in Southern Europe and then expanded northwards.
"Recall decisions, especially stop-drive actions, are based on multiple factors, including airbag specifications, vehicle age and usage, climate conditions, and notifications from regulatory authorities.
"Whilst there have been no reported instances in the UK, Stellantis has decided to deploy a stop-drive order for all impacted vehicles across Europe including the UK. This decision underscores the Company's unwavering commitment to customer safety."

Alfa Romeo boss: 'Quadrifoglio can be BEV, but it can also be ICE'

Interview CEO Santo Ficili talks to TG about what the future looks like for Alfa Romeo Skip 5 photos in the image carousel and continue reading By law, Alfa articles start with an Italian exclamation. Here goes: mamma mia , the petrol Quadrifoglio lives! Bravissimo ! Etc. Until recently Alfa planned the next Giulia and Stelvio as all electric. Now, CEO Santo Ficili says that's changed. Tariff chaos and a slow in the EV transition mean that flexibility is a must. 'There will be PHEV and HEV and BEV.' He goes on. 'My dream is to keep alive the Quadrifoglio. We can't forget this. Quadrifoglio can be BEV, why not? But it can also be ICE.' Viva V6. Advertisement - Page continues below The electric Alfas will be first, with Stelvio at the end of this year and Giulia next – main versions first then Quadrifoglio. They can have up to 800V for fast charging, big batteries for long range, and rear or twin motors. Ficili says they are having a last minute front end redesign, so they have enough cooling intakes for petrol engines. 'The design must be in line with the other models that we want to launch.' You might like How will Alfa make cars that feel different from the rest of the sprawling Stellantis Group's? 'I think the Alfa Romeo brand is Italy, is red or rosso in Italian, and is sport. Italian. Red. Sport. We need to find the right balance between these three. What I want for the product is Alfa Romeo only.' Design is the first element of this Alfa character, explains Ficili. 'When you look at the car, you must understand immediately it is an Alfa. And the driver must have everything under control. So I'm not imagining tonnes of things around you that don't help. Advertisement - Page continues below 'We need the right balance between suspension, steering, absorption, exhaust and engines to find the right handling of the car.' But there's a problem. Stubbornly low sales. Alfa hyped the Tonale and Junior as sales boosters because small and compact crossovers dominate today's market. But actually Alfa monthly sales are the same as five years ago, when the MiTo and Giulietta were in their death spirals. I mention I've lost count of the number of previous Alfa bosses who said sales would double, only to see them fall. 'We need to keep the customers who are in love with Alfa – and there is a long queue, because of the legacy, the racing, the glory, the product we created in the past.' OK, but why aren't the people in this queue buying your cars? And how do you build buzz for Alfa among people who don't actually know much about all that? 'Junior is the right model to satisfy younger people. A bridge between new customers and the older Alfisti.' He says it's doing well. Meanwhile the Tonale, which started quite strongly then tailed off, will get a deep facelift late this year. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. With that and the next Stelvio and Giulia, there'll be a freshness about Alfa's range that it hasn't had for many years. Even so, Alfa will always be small. 'We aren't BMW.' Indeed. BMW, with its much bigger range, sells 20 times as many as Alfa. But then Alfa is just a small part of the huge Stellantis Group and gets lots of synergies. The challenge is to make its cars different from the related brands. To help keep the Alfa flame burning bright, there will be more of the high end specials like the 33 Stradale, once its two-year production run is over. 'If I can also search for synergies with Maserati, we can imagine for sure to make products like this. We had the 8C, 6C, 4C. It's easy. Why? Because I can look in the past of Alfa Romeo.' But it's £1.7m a copy. I mention that if Alfa is making pretty ordinary small crossovers like the Junior, it has to earn the right to its name by also having more distinct cars at a less extreme price than the 33. He says the 33 will be a design influence. 'We can consider parts of this design, and move from these to the future models.' From 1950 to 2010 Alfa made so many gorgeous and relatively affordable coupes and spiders. 'There is space to work in the smaller segments: coupe, spider. But this is not our priority now, because now we need the models that can deliver volume that can sustain the brand.' There's simply too much turbulence, too much uncertainty, to have the luxury of launching minority cars. 'We need to consider the two years ahead that are not so clear. And then we'll see.'

Jeep Wagoneer Gains Two Feature-Laden Special Editions As Sales Plummet

Jeep Wagoneer Super Needs To Be A Hero Back in 2021, Stellantis relaunched the Wagoneer nameplate, only this time, it wasn't as a Jeep model but as a standalone luxury brand, something that was briefly all the rage everywhere (see EQ by Mercedes, Discovery by JLR, and ID by Volkswagen). Unfortunately, this confused customers and sales staff alike, and the full-size SUV ultimately became a Jeep once more. Unfortunately, despite the change, The Drive reports that Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer sales have fallen to less than half what they were a year ago, and the only slower sellers with a Jeep badge are called Renegade and Cherokee, both of which were discontinued in 2023 (the latter returns imminently). To make the most expensive Jeep in America more attractive, Stellantis has now launched the Wagoneer Super and Wagoneer Limited, and they're basically Wagoneers with options chucked at them. What is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Backcountry? Watch More Wagoneer Limited And Super Special Editions Won't Stand Out Let's start with the Limited, which Stellantis describes as 'perfect for the value-conscious customer' with a starting price of $74,440 (before $2,095 for destination). That gets you a Wagoneer Series II with body-color fender flares, chrome exterior badges, lower front and rear fascias in black, and unique 22-inch wheels. Jeep has also thrown in powered side steps and power-folding rear seats (for second and third rows), a tri-pane sunroof, and a surround-view camera. For reference, a Wagoneer Series II normally starts at $63,945 with the standard wheelbase and a 4×2 drivetrain, but not all of the above extras are available here. The Super is described as 'elevated and upscale, without a luxury price tag.' At over $80,000 ($80,440 excluding destination), that's debatable. 22-inch machined black aluminum wheels are joined again by body color fender flares, power side steps (this time in black), and a tri-pane panoramic sunroof, but also a two-tone black painted roof, carbide headlights, black-out badging and front grille, a McIntosh 19-speaker sound system not available anywhere else in this class, and a 'premium soft-touch wrapped finish' across the interior. Both vehicles can be had with a long wheelbase, for the record. Unfortunately, besides the Instagram post below, Stellantis has only provided one exterior image of each new trim. The Super Seems Like A Cringey Name, But… The Super brings back an old Kaiser Motors Wagoneer variant first seen in 1966. It didn't stick around long, but the additional options and features that found their way to the model in the 1970s when American Motors was in charge seemingly owe their existence to the Super Wagoneer. Jeep flips the name to the front for 2025, giving the Wagoneer Super $3,000 worth of additions, many of which come from the Grand Wagoneer, for $2,410 less than that model at $82,535 including destination. Basically, the Super Wagoneer and the Wagoneer Super are targeting the same goal, just in different eras.
