KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- The upcoming International Healthcare Week (IHW) 2025 is set to break new records with over 900 local, regional, and international exhibitors, well above the initial target of 750 set by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
The IHW will be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre from July 16 to 18.
MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican announced that the event is also expected to attract more than 21,000 visitors from 26 countries, featuring a wide array of healthcare products, from pharmaceutical ingredients to clinical laboratory instruments.
'This will be the largest healthcare trade show in Southeast Asia,' he said in his opening remarks at the official launch of IHW 2025, here today.
At the press conference, ASEAN Informa Markets regional portfolio director Rungphech Chitanuwat said that the surge in exhibitor participation reflects a growing international interest in Malaysia's healthcare sector, particularly in pharmaceuticals.
'The government facilitates market access and creates opportunities for international traders by evaluating and approving medicines from abroad.
'This has attracted the attention of international players in the pharmaceutical sector. When it comes to medical devices and laboratory equipment, I believe Malaysians should be proud as the country is emerging as a leader in medical tourism and hospital services,' she added.
Chitanuwat noted that the growth in hospital services reflects rising demand for medical devices and equipment, which in turn fuels the overall expansion of the healthcare sector.
MATRADE deputy chief executive of export acceleration Abu Bakar Yusof said the main economic impact of the exhibition would be in the business-to-business (B2B) segment.

‘M'sia in dire need of more occupational therapists'

TAIPING: Malaysia continues to face a significant shortage of occupational therapists compared to several developed countries, due to a general lack of public awareness regarding the importance of the profession. The Health Ministry's head of occupational therapy and rehabilitation services, Nora Hamid, said that with a population of over 34 million people, only about 2,700 occupational therapists are currently registered under the Allied Health Professions Act. She said more than half of that number are serving under the ministry, including in hospitals, health clinics, rehabilitation centres, and welfare institutions. 'Currently, the ratio stands at about one therapist for every 10,000 people. '(This) is significantly lower than neighbouring countries such as Singapore (3:10,000) and Hong Kong (4:10,000),' she said when met at the 2nd Malaysian Occupational Therapy Symposium yesterday, Bernama reported. Nora said the urgent need to increase the number of professionals in the field is in line with the World Health Organisation's Rehabilitation 2030 goal, which emphasises strengthening rehabilitation systems and ensuring access to comprehensive treatment.

RHB delivers on living wage, focuses on employee well-being and growth

KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Banking Group announced that all permanent employees in Malaysia are earning at or above the nationally recognised Living Wage benchmark of RM3,100 per month, as outlined in the Employee Provident Fund's Belanjawanku Expenditure Guide. The commitment supports the Finance Ministry's call for financial institutions and Government Linked Companies (GLCs) to lead in advancing fair compensation, aligned with the 'Raise the Floor' pillar of the Ekonomi Madani framework to improve quality of life for all Malaysians. RHB's full implementation of the Living Wage framework reflects its commitment as a responsible employer and its role in supporting Malaysia's broader efforts to improve the standard of living of the rakyat. 'At RHB, fair pay is a fundamental part of building a progressive and inclusive workplace. Our compensation practices reflect this but our duty goes further. Our Employee Value Proposition is designed to support our employees holistically, ensuring their physical, emotional and financial well-being, in a meaningful and practical way. 'This commitment is reflected in our employee engagement score which stands at 87%, a strong indicator of the trust and connection our people have with the organisation,' said RHB Banking Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Rashid Mohamad. In addition to the living wage commitment, mental health and wellness remain core areas of focus in RHB. The Group provides access to free confidential professional counselling and emotional support services through its Employee Assistance Programme, available to all employees Group wide. These are complemented by regular mental health webinars and awareness initiatives that help employees manage stress, strengthen emotional intelligence and maintain work-life balance. In 2024, RHB introduced a digital health platform offering personalised coaching, wellness tracking and lifestyle incentives, further strengthening its holistic approach to employee wellbeing. Employees also benefit from targeted financial support, including festive advance programmes, preferential rate staff loans and a dedicated Staff Welfare Fund for emergencies or personal hardship. Comprehensive medical coverage, robust insurance protection and flexible leave policies further contribute to a work environment that supports both individual and family well-being. 'We recognise the complex pressures in today's world, emotionally, financially and professionally. Our responsibility is to support them in all dimensions, not just through compensation, but through care, flexibility and long term opportunities to grow,' Mohd Rashid explained. RHB continues to invest in structured career development to future proof its workforce. In 2024 alone, the Group delivered over 390,000 hours of learning, averaging 29 hours per employee, with more than 13,000 employees participating in programmes covering digital transformation, sustainability, leadership and core technical skills. These efforts align with national priorities to create high quality jobs and strengthen social mobility. 'Our people are our greatest asset. When they thrive, our customers, communities and the nation thrive with them,' he added. RHB will continue to refine its people strategies to ensure long-term impact, for employees and the communities it serves, contributing to Malaysia's aspirations for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

Second Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok bridge construction on track

NARATHIWAT: Construction of the second bridge connecting Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, and Sungai Golok here is progressing as planned, with the Thai authorities currently in the process of selecting a contractor to carry out the project. Sungai Golok Highway Division assistant officer Teetuch Mad-adum said the contractor selection process is expected to be completed by September at the latest, in line with the timeline agreed upon by Malaysia and Thailand. 'We are confident that a suitable contractor will be identified by September, with the initial shortlist involving 10 companies,' he told Bernama yesterday. Teetuch added that the six-lane bridge, which will be built parallel to the existing Muhibbah Bridge, is expected to have a significant impact on local economic development and further strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and Thailand. 'The purpose of this bridge is to widen the existing route. Once completed, it will improve the flow of economic activity and make cross-border movement much easier,' he said, adding that the completion of the bridge will also have an impact on nearby illegal jetties. He said there had been no objections from local residents regarding the project, and all studies conducted so far indicated no negative impact. 'This bridge is being built specifically to stimulate economic growth, and the entire process has proceeded smoothly without any major obstacles,' he said. On financing, Teetuch said the construction cost would be shared by both countries, with Malaysia allocating RM17 million and Thailand RM32 million, which includes related infrastructure upgrades. He added that construction is expected to begin as early as September, following the contractor selection, or by December at the latest, with completion targeted within 36 months. Previously, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project involves building a new 117.3-metre bridge parallel to the existing structure, along with upgrading works on the Muhibbah Bridge. In April, the media reported that the Thai Cabinet had approved the construction of a second bridge across Sungai Golok, linking Sungai Golok with Rantau Panjang, Kelantan. The project is viewed as a key step toward strengthening regional connectivity, facilitating cross-border movement, and supporting ASEAN economic integration. Thailand is Malaysia's seventh-largest global trading partner and the third-largest within ASEAN. In 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). For the period January to February 2025, trade increased to USD3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion), up from USD3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) in the same period last year.
