Cardinals' Willson Contreras hints his pitchers aren't protecting him from being hit by pitches

New York Post19 hours ago
Willson Contreras can't stop getting hit by pitches, and he seems to believe his Cardinals teammates are partially to blame.
'Every hit by pitch is scary,' the star first baseman told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Pirates, during which he was hit for the second time in a week. 'I wish it hit me in a different spot. Every hit-by-pitch on the hand is really scary… Probably, it can be bad luck. It can be they're trying to go in and off the plate. And we're not protecting anybody, [so] that's going to keep happening.'
Contreras, who has been hit by an MLB-high 14 pitches this season, seemed to be insinuating that St. Louis' pitchers aren't sticking up for him by not hitting opposing batters in retaliation.

'I know they're not trying to hit me in the hand,' Contreras added. 'I'm a human being. It gets old. I want to play. I want to stay in the game. I don't know what to say about it. Protect myself, and hopefully somebody protects me.'
Tuesday's hit-by-pitch was particularly harmful for Contreras, who underwent X-rays on his left hand after Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes hit him with a fastball in the fourth inning.
The tests came back negative, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo, and the Cardinals have listed Contreras as day-to-day.

A three-time All-Star, Contreras is hitting .248 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs this year.
He signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Cardinals in December 2022 after spending the first seven years of his MLB career with the Cubs.

The 33-year-old was hit by the most pitches in the majors in 2020, with 14 during the pandemic-shortened season.
He was hit by the third-most pitches in MLB in 2022 with 24, although he's on pace to top that number this season with ease.

Giants defeat D-Backs, snap 4 game skid after Bailey's sacrifice fly in 10th

Patrick Bailey's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning brought home Jung Ho Lee and the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Wednesday night. The Giants led 5-3 heading into the ninth, but Geraldo Perdomo led off with a single and then Ketel Marte — who was named a National League All-Star starter at second base earlier in the day — launched a tying homer to right off Camilo Doval for his 18th long ball of the season. San Francisco retook the lead in the 10th on Bailey's fly ball to center after Lee advanced to third on an infield single by Heliot Ramos. Doval (4-2) worked the bottom of the 10th for the win. Willy Adames #2 of the San Francisco Giants high fives teammates after the game at Chase Field on July 2, 2025 in Phoenix. Andy Kuno/SanSan Francisco's Mike Yastrzemski went deep on the second pitch of the game, driving a fastball into the right field seats. Lee's triple drove home Wilmer Flores to make it 2-0 in the first. The Giants pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth on Rafael Devers' RBI single. Alek Thomas hit a leadoff homer to cut the deficit to 3-1 and the next three batters reached base against Landen Roupp with no outs. Lefty Erik Miller did an admirable job getting out of the jam, allowing Josh Naylor's sacrifice fly but perserving a 3-2 lead. Arizona's Merrill Kelly gave up three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. The right-hander struck out three. Key moments The D-backs' first two batters of the seventh inning reached base, but reliever Randy Rodriguez got out of the tough spot by striking out Tim Tawa and getting Naylor to ground into a double play. Key stat Perdomo reached base five times on three hits and two walks. Up next The teams wrap up the series Thursday night when the Giants send former Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (8-3, 2.75 ERA) to the mound. He'll face D-backs RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8-5, 5.38 ERA).

66 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 66?

With 66 days till the Cardinals open the season against the Saints, we look at the players who have worn No. 66. We are counting down to the start of the 2025 regular season for the Arizona Cardinals and are less than 10 weeks away. They will open the season on the road against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. That is 66 days away. As we count down the remaining days of the offseason, let's look at who has worn that number uniform over the years for the Cardinals. Who has worn No. 66? Cardinals players to wear No. 66 Offensive lineman McClendon Curtis currently wears No. 66. He is in his first season with the team after he spent the last two years with the Seattle Seahawks, mostly on the practice squad. Faneca, a Hall of Famer, was the best player for the Cardinals to wear No. 66, but Dobler was probably the greatest Cardinals player to wear it.
