Aaron Glenn's Jets practices already showing an edge as two skirmishes break out
Even in the spring, when NFL rules prohibit wearing pads and ban live contact, there is an edge to new head coach Aaron Glenn that seeps into his players.
There were two skirmishes after the whistle — neither escalated to fisticuffs — during Tuesday's OTAs. Glenn stopped practice at one point.
'It started to get a little — I don't want to say 'physical' — but pushing and shoving,' Glenn said. 'You want to stop that because, listen, we're all in underwear. Let's practice and let's move forward. But those things happen. It's football. You correct it, and you move on.'

It's common for tempers to flare during training camp, when temperatures soar into the 90s, the fatigue and monotony of an everyday schedule sets in and pads allow for increased physicality. That's when a punch might be thrown.
Receiver Josh Reynolds knows the intensity Glenn is looking for after practicing against the defenses Glenn coordinated as a member of the Lions (2021-23).
'We're going to practice with a purpose, and the purpose is to win games, the purpose is to get better, the purpose is to have detail and technique and finish,' Reynolds said. 'When guys are wanting to win, yeah, it's going to get a little chippy. It's like a good mixture of, 'Can we do that but still kind of be under control?' '
CB Sauce Gardner, DT Quinnen Williams, DE Will McDonald and DE Micheal Clemons were the most noticeable absences. All OTAs are voluntary, and mandatory minicamp begins next Tuesday.
Shortly after practice ended, Gardner was on X, reacting to a Pro Football Focus list ranking him as the No. 1 corner in the NFL.
'Them fake & forced narratives can't stop reality. been one of them ones,' Gardner wrote, adding a shushing emoji.

As for Clemons, who has missed multiple media-viewed OTAs, Glenn balked at criticizing voluntary attendance.
'He's been here,' Glenn said. 'Other days, I've said we had 100 percent participation. I don't want to paint that narrative that he hasn't been here.'
It was Great Catch Day.
Take your pick between Garrett Wilson jumping over the back of Michael Carter II to grab a pass from QB Justin Fields, the tip-to-himself catch by Xavier Gipson from QB Tyrod Taylor, Pokey Wilson's sideline grab through a view obstructed by a leaping defender on a layered touch pass from Taylor, and rookie Malachi Moore's diving interception and pop-up return for a touchdown off QB Brady Cook.
Rookie second-round pick Mason Taylor is staking his claim to a starting tight end job.
'It's the blocking that really gets me going,' Glenn said. 'Because I know what he can do in the passing game. For him to come out and do the things he's doing in the run game … the position, the body language, the leverage, I really love that when it comes to the run game.'

A member of the Chargers' coaching staff has departed the franchise. Via Daniel Popper of assistant defensive line coach Will Tukuafu has stepped down for personal reasons. Tukuafu was previously a defensive quality control coach for the Seahawks, the other team he played for professionally. Popper notes the Chargers have hired former Colorado State assistant Chuka Ndulue as an Alex G. Spanos coaching fellow. Report: Lloyd Howell charged NFLPA for strip club visits
The enhanced scrutiny focused on Lloyd Howell Jr.'s tenure as the NFL Players Association's executive director isn't going away, even after he resigned from the position. ESPN reported Friday afternoon that an union-hired outside investigation into Howell found he submitted expense reports charging the union for two visits to strip clubs. One report from November 2023 showed a charge of more than $700 for a car service that took Howell from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Tootsie's Cabaret – "the world's largest strip club spanning over 76,000 square feet," according to its website – in Miami Gardens around 10:30 p.m. Howell reportedly hired the driver to "wait seven hours outside" before taking Howell back home to Sunny Isles Beach at 6 a.m., according to a receipt, as reported by ESPN. NFL, NFLPA EXPLAINER: What to know about grievances, Lloyd Howell, next steps Earlier this year, Howell again traveled to a strip club on the union's dime, ESPN reported. This time, he and two employees visited Magic City in Atlanta as part of what the expense report called a "Player Engagement Event." He and the employees spent a reported $2,426 that night "including cash withdrawals, ranging from $200 to $525, from a club ATM," according to ESPN. One expense report requested a reimbursement of $736 for charges for "secluded sections for our Player Members" – ESPN noted that the NFLPA visitors used two "VIP rooms" at Magic City – as well as food and alcoholic beverages. The names of the "Player Members" were kept off the report. A former union employee reportedly told ESPN that strip clubs or other venues are not explicitly excluded from reimbursements. "But I don't think anyone in their right mind would think that is an optically good scenario," the employee went on to say. LLOYD HOWELL: NFLPA executive director resigns after multiple controversies Howell's strip club activities – and tendency to charge the company card for it – are reportedly not a new phenomenon. ESPN also reported that Howell had been investigated for a similar incident while at his prior employer, technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, in 2015. The sports media company wrote that Howell attended a strip club in New York City that year with a senior vice president of the company. When the senior VP submitted an expense report seeking reimbursement for the "thousands of dollars" the two had spent at the club, Booz Allen fired the VP and reprimanded Howell. The company promoted Howell to its chief financial officer position the following year. Howell resigned from his position as the executive director of the NFLPA Wednesday night after just over two years serving in the role. He said in a statement, "It's clear that my leadership has become a distraction to the important work the NFLPA advances every day. For this reason, I have informed the NFLPA Executive Committee that I am stepping down as Executive Director of the NFLPA and Chairman of the Board of NFL Players effective immediately. "I hope this will allow the NFLPA to maintain its focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season." NFL training camp 2025: Shedeur Sanders, Browns rookies reporting Friday
The 2025 NFL season is right around the corner. Teams have officially begun reporting to training camp across the league. Some franchises have their rookies report first, while others just go straight to full squad. Yahoo Sports is on the road this summer hitting camps across the country, and we're rounding up the news, updates, position battles, contract drama and more you need to know. Off we go! Top storylines of NFL training camp NFL training camp tracker NFL training camp report dates Wednesday, July 16 Los Angeles Chargers Saturday, July 19 Detroit Lions Monday, July 21 Kansas City Chiefs | Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, July 22 Buffalo Bills | Miami Dolphins | New England Patriots | New York Jets | Baltimore Ravens | Cincinnati Bengals | Cleveland Browns | Houston Texans | Indianapolis Colts | Jacksonville Jaguars | Tennessee Titans | Denver Broncos | Las Vegas Raiders | New York Giants | Philadelphia Eagles | Washington Commanders | Chicago Bears | | Green Bay Packers | Minnesota Vikings | Carolina Panthers | New Orleans Saints | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Arizona Cardinals | Los Angeles Rams | San Francisco 49ers | Seattle Seahawks Wednesday, July 23 Pittsburgh Steelers | Atlanta Falcons Top NFL training camp storylines How will Browns' quarterback competition end? Joe Flacco appears to be the favorite, Kenny Pickett is a veteran with a shot, Dillon Gabriel was the higher of the two draft picks this past spring, and Shedeur Sanders is, well, Shedeur Sanders. Whoever wins, it'll be buzzy. Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey join up with Steelers Two of the biggest offseason additions happened in June, and the Steelers are counting on them to help lift the franchise higher than a first-round exit and into genuine Super Bowl contention. Will Terry McLaurin get a new deal? Terry McLaurin had his best season last year and is now entering the final year of his current contract. But there's been little movement on an extension, despite McLaurin sitting out of minicamp in June to send a message. "I've been pretty frustrated, I'm not gonna lie," McLaurin said Tuesday. The question Washington must answer: How long will he stay that way? What's up with contract extensions for Micah Parsons and Trey Hendrickson? T.J. Watt got his historic contract extension. Now attention turns toward two other star pass rushers, Micah Parsons and Trey Hendrickson. The Cowboys notoriously slow-play retaining their star talent, so while it feels like a Parsons deal will get done, the fact it hasn't is notable. And the Bengals and Hendrickson are talking again, so there's that. How fast will all second-round picks sign? A handful of second-round picks from this past draft have now signed, after the first two that did had their contracts fully guaranteed. The rest are pushing for as much guaranteed money as possible, and thus far it's benefited the players greatly. How will George Pickens incorporate with Cowboys? Dak Prescott is hyped to throw to newly acquired wide receiver George Pickens, especially with CeeDee Lamb already in the same offense. Will we see early fireworks at camp and in preseason from this connection? How will J.J. McCarthy look as Vikings QB? After missing last year (on-field, at least) due to injury, J.J. McCarthy takes the reins as QB1 in Minnesota. Will the 2024 10th overall pick reward the faith of head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who let Sam Darnold walk this offseason? And if he doesn't, could a Kirk Cousins reunion be in line? How will Jaguars use Travis Hunter? The second overall pick of the draft has spent the majority of his time on offense this offseason and has gotten defensive snaps when the daily plan called for it. We'll get more information on how the Jaguars will use him this month. How soon can Jaxson Dart start? Russell Wilson is QB1 with the Giants to start training camp. But first-round pick Jaxson Dart has prototype physical traits and could push to begin his inevitable takeover of the job sooner rather than later. Ben Johnson's first year with Bears, Caleb Williams Chicago wanted an offensive mastermind to pair with its first overall pick from 2024. Ben Johnson is that guy, having helmed the Lions' prolific offense the past few seasons. What will he look like as a head coach with a talent like Williams? Raiders' new-look offense gets installed Geno Smith is the quarterback. Ashton Jeanty is the running back. Brock Bowers is arguably TE1 leaguewide already. Chip Kelly is the new offensive coordinator. The Raiders should be entertaining as hell on offense. We get our first true glimpses very soon. Sam Darnold takes over in Seattle The Seahawks' $100(.5) million QB is the centerpiece of an overhaul that took place this offseason. Klint Kubiak will be calling plays, DK Metcalf is gone, and the offense as a whole will look different. The biggest piece will be Darnold, who can either prove the first 16 games last year were his real self — and not the last two. NFL training camp tracker Report: Bears, WR Luther Burden III agree to fully guaranteed deal Chicago has now agreed to contracts with all three of its second-round picks, now that Burden is in the fold. His deal is for $10.965 million, which is fully guaranteed, per ESPN. Chicago Bears reached agreement today with second-round pick WR Luther Burden III on a fully-guaranteed, $10.965 million contract, marking the first time in NFL history that the 39th pick has secured a fully-guaranteed deal, per the @WINSportsGroup. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 18, 2025 49ers place WRs Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall on PUP list Aiyuk is still working his way back from a torn ACL. Pearsall, meanwhile, has a hamstring injury that forced him to miss mandatory minicamp in June, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said he'd be ready for training camp. Apparently that's not the case, as Pearsall is joining Aiyuk on the PUP list. How concerning is this for the 49ers? Packers sign 2nd-round pick Anthony Belton The tackle out of North Carolina State is now in the fold, and all of the Packers' 2025 draft picks have been signed. We signed Anthony Belton! — Green Bay Packers (@packers) July 18, 2025 Tre Harris putting in work at Chargers camp Tre' Harris sighting — Kris Rhim (@krisrhim1) July 18, 2025 Mason Graham is in the building at Browns camp The No. 5 overall pick in the draft, whom the Browns selected after trading down from No. 2, has arrived as rookies are reporting today. 'Let's win some games' - @MasonGraham_55 — Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 18, 2025 Where does NFLPA go from here now that Lloyd Howell has resigned? Lloyd Howell tendered his resignation to the NFLPA's executive committee. When the sun rose Friday morning, the NFLPA no longer had an executive director, leaving leadership to scramble for an emergency meeting in the coming days to set a new course. One of the first questions that will need to be answered is whether chief strategy officer J.C. Tretter will remain. Tretter served as the president of the NFLPA from 2020 to 2024, overlapping with his final years playing for the Cleveland Browns. It was during that time when he constructed a highly secretive election process that ultimately concluded with Howell landing the union's executive director position. In turn, Howell then hired Tretter as the union's chief strategy officer, creating at least the perception that the two men were linked at the hip inside the association. We'll get to that pressing business in a moment. But first, a small autopsy on Howell's quietly turbulent two-year stint with the union. What's next for NFLPA? Seahawks sign second-round pick TE Elijah Arroyo After being one of many second-round picks holding off from signing, former Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo has agreed a four-year, $8.813 million deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Arroyo's contract includes $6.972 million fully guaranteed. It was a great hire of a coach who had won everywhere he had been. He was coming off an undefeated national championship season at Michigan. The Chargers got themselves a star at head coach. The question wasn't about the long term. It was whether, after nine years in college and some personnel losses as the Chargers got their salary cap in order, if Harbaugh could succeed in Year 1. Then Harbaugh reminded everyone that he's one of the best football coaches in the world. The Chargers went 11-6. They improved across the board. Justin Herbert transformed as a quarterback, improving his efficiency and becoming the star everyone thought he had been already. The Chargers' season ended with a weird, flat wild-card loss against the Houston Texans, but don't focus on that. The term "changing the culture" is overused in the sports world, but there's no better way to describe what Harbaugh has already done in L.A. For nine straight years the Chiefs have won the AFC West, and they've rarely been tested. There have been a few charges by the Chargers for the crown, but the Chiefs have always held them off. The story has usually been the same, and it's that a talented roster falls short of expectations. The Chargers are unlikely to underachieve anymore now that Harbaugh is in charge. Full Chargers preview 3 second-year breakout candidates for fantasy With the NFL season approaching and fantasy football drafts in full swing, there's never been a better time to determine which players could be this year's breakout stars. It seems easy in hindsight, but identifying young talent on the verge of making a major leap is often what propels fantasy managers to championships. Over the next week, I'll highlight my favorite breakout candidates at every key fantasy position. Today, we're taking a look at wide receivers. Dillon Gabriel is in the building! @_dillongabriel_ | #DawgPound — Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 18, 2025 It's Cowboys' turn to extend their star pass rusher in Micah Parsons Myles Garrett is no longer asking the Cleveland Browns for a trade. Speculation about T.J. Watt's future with the Pittsburgh Steelers, too, has concluded. So Micah Parsons, you're up. It's time for the Dallas Cowboys to experience the edge rusher market. Because four years after the Cowboys awarded the first-ever $40-million-per-year contract to an NFL player (hello, quarterback Dak Prescott), their time is coming to award that size of contract to a non-quarterback. The most likely outcome: Dallas pays Parsons and pays him handsomely, on an extension beginning after this year's fifth-year option contract, that awards Parsons more than Watt's $41 million per year and more than Garrett's $123.3 million in guarantees. If the Cowboys close the deal before the Detroit Lions and 2022 second overall draft pick Aidan Hutchinson, they may not need to factor in yet another record-setting deal. Hutchinson entered the NFL a year after Parsons and played just five games last season before suffering a season-ending broken tibia and fibula. Even so, the Lions have a recent history of closing deals early. Parsons contract extension not a matter of if, but when NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell announces resignation As players report to training camps across the NFL and take the field, they'll do so with a vacancy at the head of their union. NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell announced his resignation on Thursday after a week of criticism over his leadership and past, via a statement released by the union. Howell conceded "it's clear that my leadership has become a distraction to the important work the NFLPA advances every day." His resignation is effective immediately. The union's executive committee sent a text to its players confirming that Howell is stepping down and promising convene soon to discuss next steps. Rookies report to the Cleveland Browns for training camp on Friday. Early training camp practices often focus on reiterating offensive installations after the long break. But meeting rooms, practices and preseason games will give the Browns more data points off which to determine their depth chart and starter roles. A seemingly four-way quarterback competition to outsiders feels more like a pair of two-way competitions on the ground in Berea. But the Browns won't count out surprises in the next six weeks. Let's break down Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillion Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, as well as what they've produced, what they bring to the table, and where they stand. More on Browns Justin Herbert testing out red-tinted contact lenses at Chargers camp Justin Herbert makes headlines every time the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback switches up his hairstyle. He's in the news Thursday for another change to his appearance. The blue-eyed Herbert is testing red-tinted contact lenses at Chargers training camp. The prescription UV protection lenses serve as an alternative to a tinted helmet visor, which Herbert tried to wear a couple years ago but didn't like because of how often he had to clean it off. Parsons contract extension not a matter of if, but when Myles Garrett is no longer asking the Cleveland Browns for a trade.
